This summer I went swimming
This summer I might have drowned
But I held my breath, I kicked my feet
Moved my arms around
I moved my arms around
This summer I swam in the ocean
And I swam in a swimming pool
Salt my wounds, chlorined my eyes
I'm a self-destructive fool
Self-destructive fool
This summer I did the back stroke
And you know that that's not all
I did the breast stroke, the butterfly
And the old Australian crawl
The old Australian crawl
This summer I swam in a public place
And a reservoir to boot
At the latter I was informal
At the former I wore my suit
I wore my swimming suit
Oh, this summer I did swan dives
And jack-knives for you all
And once when you weren't looking
I did a cannon-ball
I did a cannon-ball
This summer I went swimming
This summer I might have drowned
But I held my breath, I kicked my feet
And moved my arms around
This summer I might have drowned
But I held my breath, I kicked my feet
Moved my arms around
I moved my arms around
This summer I swam in the ocean
And I swam in a swimming pool
Salt my wounds, chlorined my eyes
I'm a self-destructive fool

Much nicer with just him and guitar.
Normaly i dont like style of this music, but my feet began to move!! Not bad!
Either the lyrics are deeply metaphorical or just plain mundane - I couldn't listen to it long enough to decide before I had to lever myself out of the pool. A nailed-on Ho-Hum from the doggy paddling Nottingham jury.
He would have been better off getting some sweet babe to sing his songs for him. He voice is just pure crap.
RiP Loudon, from a long time listener.

He was great,as was his wife and her sister.
Too bad about the kids.
An awesome songwriter on a par with John Prine.

My ex husband used to sing Rufus is a Tit Man to our son when he was a baby. hehehehehe
(Happily, Simon is none the worse for it) hehe
Also, Attempted Mustache is such the great album title!
Loudon is the undisputed King of the whimsical ditty.
I've been a Loudon fan since I was in HS. I remember really liking a song of his he wrote about his son called "Rufus is a Tit Man". I figured out an abbreviated chord progression and would sing it for my friends. funny stuff...but I'll bet he would have been surprised to find out how wrong he was about rufus...

I just love this song... Very Forrest Gump-ish...

I love their version. What a great summer song!
The McGarrigle sisters covered it beautifully. Sad that Kate passed away about a year ago.

This is funny.
I hope I have that much fun this summer.

LWIII's first 3 albums are underrated and sadly forgotten gems (this is the 4th, which wasn't quite as good, IMO).

Just what I was thinking. The McGarrigle Family is having a memorial concert for Kate in New York on May 13. My daughter has tickets. So jealous.

Yea, such a simple yet catchy song. Glad you all like!
Remember how HIP it was to have a moustache in the early 1970's?
I met Loudon once upon a time....very interesting guy. I like the banjo on this swimming song.
Oh man, no "Dead Skunk (In The Middle of The Road)" in the RP library....?

that's one attention-grabbing album title!
