But I don't want you to hide
It's cold and loveless
I won't let you be denied
Soothing
I'll make you feel pure
Trust me
You can be sure
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognize your beauty's not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
You trick your lovers
That you're wicked and divine
You may be a sinner
But your innocence is mine
Please me
Show me how it's done
Tease me
You are the one
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognize your beauty's not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
Please me
Show me how it's done
Trust me

Sure, the music is lifeless and flat, but check out these f*cking LASERS!!
They also made a surprisingly good movie of it starring the always excellent John Hurt as Winston Smith and Richard Burton in his last role as O'Brien. One of the few movies that is worthy of the book it is based on.
I most heartily agree!
Playing a song from a concept album about Orwell's 1984 would certainly raise the intellectual tone of Eurovision, right enough, but sadly this is a couple of orders of magnitude more interesting and complex than Eurovision. This was the first Muse album I bought, courtesy of hearing tracks from it on RP, and IMO it's still their best. 9 from the Nottingham jury.
Oh, and I keep saying this, but I would strongly recommend that anyone who's not read 1984 to do so as it has very strong resonances with current events, particularly the near-totalitarian surveillance in many Western countries, including the US and UK.
*The ones about the pseudogoth vampires with the sparkly skin that are aimed a junior high girls.
Yep, sounds bout right.
"..this one seems to be a homage to bubblegum boy/girl bands all over the world"
Agreed. I've heard some other Muse stuff on RP and liked it so I was dismayed when I heard this was a Muse song.
They play this song on the radio a fair bit and I REALLY dislike it, regardless of what the song's based on.
IMHO: cheesy lyrics + over-the-top dramatic expression of the lead singer = very wince-worthy song.

Wow, I thought this was Cloud Cult at first. I havn't heard them on here in a long time.
This is a secret message for people over 50:
If you disclose to males, aged 20-35, that you are a fan of Muse, you will instantly attain "cool" status.
I don't know why, but this works.
I am not over 50, but usually having the same musical taste of males aged 20-25 is NOT a good thing and this is certainly no exception!
My brain's hurting. My 21 year-old loves Muse and I can fake it.
But I had a sudden (loving but really unlikely) image of my father, born 1917 and now dead a few years, declaring in 1973 that he was a fan of Neil Young!
Got to go and sit in a quiet place and think about that...
My Dad, born in 1929, saw Frank Zappa on TV around the time I was 15 (around 1977). My Dad thought he was amazing. I instantly thought my Dad was cool.

I think you need to adjust that age bracket a bit. Maybe I'm anomalous, but I'm 31 and I HATE this band.
Maybe make it more like "aged 14-22".

Yippee! I'm cool! First time EVER!!!
That reminds me, I have a t-shirt to make...

I think anyone in the 20 - 35 age group who are fans of Muse will attain "cool" status with me.
Thanks, guy, I thought my 'cool' days had passed forever, but as a big fan of Muse maybe I'm back in. Sure, it's pomp-rock, but intelligent and educated pomp-rock - what other band has recorded an album in homage to Orwell's 1984?
Rick Wakeman comes to mind:
Haven't heard it in years, but, as far as I remember, not a bad effort.
Every bit as pompous as Muse, though...

When I listen to most of muse songs running on RP, the singer sounds like thom yorke being tortured.. to me, this is kinda cool in comparison... just opinions, and still don't get what this band has in common with Queen
The songs are direct references to Orwell's 1984, where the world is divided into 3 power blocs: Eurasia, Eastasia, and Oceania. I'd strongly recommend reading the book (or at least looking at the Wikipedia entry) as, although written in 1948, it is highly relevant these days and is truly a great work of literature. Orwell distilled the very essence of totalitarian power, regardless of the 'flavour' of the regime, and the features of Big Brother are very clearly evident in modern Western States. The slogans of BB are very apposite today:
War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength

YOU ARE RIGHT!
was privileged to see them in Utah in April - 5 rows from front ~ YES, YES!! :)
LUCKY YOU!

Yeah, loved the prior album too, and bought this one ASAP. Was disappointed. This just doesn't rock it out like Black Holes and Revelations. Bands can change and that's cool, but I'll always love BH&R.
I have resented my boss for that since.

First, I'm glad to see you're still hanging around and posting to song comments.
Second, if you get a chance to see them live, DO. I saw them open for U2 back in October and they sounded awesome, and they had an amazing sound despite being in an open air football stadium.
"shallow"? The album is based on a classic work of literature, George Orwell's 1984, hardly an airport lounge book. There are plenty of criticisms that could, and have, been made of this CD, but "shallow" is one that just can't be justifiably levelled at it. What do you want them to do to be 'profound' - write a musical based on Kafka's Metamorphoses?
I mean the ankle-deep music. Pretentious "oh we're deep" lyrics based on someone else's brilliance doesn't do much for me either. I get more out of listening to Tom Waits sing about The Eyeball Kid.

I agree, they won't will they?

I think this track is of a piece with the whole theme of the album, which is based on Orwell's 1984. This song makes me think of the part of the book where Winston Smith and Julia get together for sex for the first time. It is a very fine album, with a range of musical influences as you write. 8 from the Nottingham jury for the song, 9 for the album.
Yeah...I was hearing the Depeche too. Good tune.
i bet depeche mode WISHES their new album were this good.
This is TERRIBLE.
mmmm John Taylor
Di niente :)
no... very no.
They are the #1 Live Act in the UK. I get to go see them in Vegas in December, 1400 seat venue, can't wait!! They are seriously talented!
Right. My younger friends listen to this stuff and think they've discovered some astoundingly original new sound. Totally nicked from 80's synth-rock. Just listen to the patented John Taylor (Duran Duran) bass plucking.
Yep!
starting to grow on me.
Saw them open up for U2 last week in Atlanta. They were incredible. All everyone was talking about after the show...
hahaha
Hear, hear!
If you like this, you will like the rest of the album. This is not Muse's usual sound, but it's a great new style for them!
Sounds like flat Depeche Mode. "Flat" in the flat diet pepsi sense, not in the musical sense.
actually it is very Depeche Modish. Were it no for Bellemy tenor.
