Flipped into the wind
Like the ashes of her cigarette
He got scattered and thrown on the breeze
As he tried to forget
He lost all his heat
And his heart never will be the same
He got lighter than air
But he'll only come down in the rain
Strung out and hung out to dry
Laughin' under the line
It's not such a dignified place
But he really don't mind
He says with his feet on the ground
He'd have nothin' to gain
Claims he likes it up there
And he'll only come down in the rain
Chorus:
Comin' down in the rain
Washin' out of the sky
Loaded down with the pain
There just ain't no way to fly
And you can read him as clear
As the wall where he once wrote his name
It was right next to hers
But it'll only come down in the rain
Burnin' himself out on a limb
Like a leaf in the fall
He blazed for awhile
Now he's feelin' all dried up and small
The color's all gone
Disappeared near as quick as it came
He says he can't stay up
But he'll only come down in the rain
(Repeat chorus)
And you can read him as clear as the wall
Where he once wrote his name
It was right next to hers
But it'll only come down in the rain
Like the ashes of her cigarette
He got scattered and thrown on the breeze
As he tried to forget
He lost all his heat
And his heart never will be the same

Nanci Griffith did do a cover of this tune on her Other Voices, Other Rooms album. Good song.

At first I thought it might be Iris DeMent, but at the end it's definitely Patty Griffin. Very nice.

in that vein, this guy did a collaboration with Art Garfunkel (and Maia Sharp) in 2002 called "Everything Waits to be Noticed" that is a very nice recording. I highly recommend it.

As I mentioned before, this is something I uploaded after seeing him with my wife solo at a house concert last fall. Now, this morning, Bill played it while I was writing a message in a card to pack in her luggage. We're three months into her four month re-assignment hundreds of miles away. This was one of her weekends home and she's packing so I can take her back to the airport in a few hours. What timing and what perfection for us today. Are you in our basement Bill?
Bill's in everyone's basement. Much appreciate this upload. It's what I needed to get me through today.

Defines 'bittersweet' - must be the cello...
Wow, what a great version of this song! I used to sing this with my sister in coffeehouses! Fun harmonies.-
Every time this comes on I've got to stop and just listen...
Beautiful. Thanks :)

This is a really great song... it hits me in the depths of my soul, though...painful and reminiscent... remembering... time heals natural.
I like Nanci Griffith's version of this better...her voice flows thru the lyrics with better transition.
Cool! This is my upload. We got to see him on Nov. 17th. at a cabin concert. Just him and his guitar. He actually wrote this song and Nanacy Griffith picked it up. That's her doing background on his recording.

Reminds me a bit of Steve Poltz. Very nice on the first listen.
Like Nanci Griffith's version more. Still, a good song.
Very Nice Song.
