Just down the street from your hotel, baby,
I stay at home with my disease,
And ain't this position familiar, darling,
Well, all monkeys do what they see,
Help me stay awake, I'm falling.
Down on Virginia and La Loma,
Where I got friends who'll care for me,
You got an attitude of everything I ever wanted,
I got an attitude of need,
So help me stay awake, I'm falling.
Asleep in perfect blue buildings,
Beside the green apple sea,
I wanna get me a little oblivion baby,
Try to keep myself away from me.
It's 4:30 A.M. on a Tuesday,
And it doesn't get much worse than this,
In beds in little rooms in buildings in the middle,
Of these lives which are completely meaningless,
Help me stay awake, I'm falling.
Asleep in perfect blue buildings,
Beside the green apple sea,
I wanna get me a little oblivion baby,
Try to keep myself away from myself and me.
Well I got bones beneath my skin, and mister,
There's a skeleton in every man's house,
Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody,
There's a dead man trying to get out,
So please help me stay awake, I'm falling.
Asleep in perfect blue buildings,
Beside the green apple sea,
I wanna get me a little oblivion baby,
Try to keep myself away from me.
Perfect blue buildings, oh,
Beside the green apple sea,
I wanna get me a little oblivion baby,
Try to keep myself away from myself and me.
Oh, in the perfect blue buildings,
I can't keep myself away from me,
Oh, in the perfect blue buildings,
Said how 'm I gonna keep myself,
How 'm I gonna keep myself away from me,
Keep myself away,
How 'm I gonna keep myself away from me,
Keep myself away,
How 'm I gonna keep myself away from me.
I stay at home with my disease,

Following Natalie Merchant with Counting Crows makes me think of the mid-90s. Those were good times, for me at least.

not the best song in his best album.
This singer's voice is very difficult to listen to. Sadly, there is no PSD with Sonos app when selecting RP..
Putting me to sleep. PSD.

This from someone whose "sucko-barfo" ratings outnumber all his others.
Talk about whiny whiners.
People hate on this because it's whiny whiner music for whiners ... "How can I keep my narcissistic self away from me?"
RP selects the best songs by the most insufferable artists, makes them listenable. Humiliated grapes folded into the golden dough that is radioparadise ...
This one only became truly awful at the angsty end.

I've noticed there is a lot of hate for vocalists that show vulnerability (this guy, Sufjan Stevens, Coldplay, Neil Young, etc.). I'll let the psychiatrists explain why that is. For me, this is an excellent song from an excellent album.
Wow - reading the comments and see there are a lot of haters here.
Listen to the entire album - how can anyone NOT love it??

it seems alot of folk can't take the crows, especially the vocals, but wavering raspy singers aside I really like this tune and the imagry of the lyrics. as an architect I collect building related songs (little pink houses anyone?) and this one always makes me think of the pacific design center in LA for some reason. obscure yes, but to each his own. an 8.

Duritz is *not* a whiny prick!
Maybe he's not a prick. Every interview I've seen with him portrayed him in a favorable light.
But he's undeniably whiny, his music definitely lacks range, and he's definitely the worst thing about the otherwise great Shrek movies.
Sometimes I like this guy's voice. This is not one of those times.
ahhh...quit yer whinin, whelp!

what he said. i am shocked they make the RP playlist. such pablum. such drivel. and the one-note-whiner of a lead singer, don't get me started

Thanks, Mari! And thanks Bill and Rebecca for your good taste in accepting it! CC songs always seem to be polarizing here (Duritz is *not* a whiny prick!), but I think this is a great song from a brilliant album

My favorite song on this album. I can't believe it's over 10 years old.
Just can't get tired of this album (except Mr. Jones) - just find this and some of the other songs powerful.

One I should have bought a long time ago and never did because I thought the radio had grabbed all the good tracks from it. I see that I was wrong.

Really like CC incl this song, but this comment is perfect for some reason
