Why does a song with an average rating of 4 get played 5 or 6 times in a month? I hope the answer is simply that the playlists typically get re-used that many times. It can't be because Bill consciously selected it!
I recognize that Neil Diamond has talent, and that many people enjoy his work immensely. I respect that.
But this is really quite unpleasant, IMO.
I only can survive this song by counting the amount of all Marys... But I've not started counting from the begining yet so I don't know aggregate.

...My Mum just loved Neil Diamond and was always vying with Dad's Heavier persuasion, so I got the best of both worlds and still just love to listen to Neil Diamond and Kate and Anna McGarrigle and Joni Mitchell etc...Radio Paradise wasn't around then for them, but it is for me and you, thank God!...
Hi,
Just like you, I love Neil DIamond, kate and Anna.I can add Emmylou Harris, etc...
I met Anna and kate as they were my next door neighbour in Montreal. It was a long time ago.....
Is it just because it's Niel Diamond, or what? This song is fine. And Neil has a great voice. I rate this a 7 along with many other more 'acceptable' singer and groups. (See my file for what I consider worth a 7)
gee. Somebody gave this a ten? Must have been Mary.
My first impression of this song was it was as boring as could be, but then as it continued I found it annoying. So annoying in fact that I eventually had to turn down to speakers. That "Mary, oh Mary, oh Mary" was like a stick poking me in the side over and over again.
I would love to hear some of the other 11 songs from this album, but please, not this one. Ever again. never. Please.

I believe this is the CD that SONY decieded to put a trojan horse into so if you upload it onto your computer it adds a real nice Trojan virus to stop you from copying the song onto your MP3 player etc...

And they've recalled it so that now it doesn't:

My goodness this song is bad. I like much of Neil Diamond's music but I have to say this song just isn't working for me. Please never play this again.

For those of us Neil Diamond fans, we can truly appreciate what he has accomplished on this album; a wonderful album at that. To step outside his normal style and release such beautiful music is one hell of an accomplishment. I can understand the Neil Diamond haters out there; he has a bad reputation and many people are unwilling to give him a chance (like those with bad grammar). However, if you listen without thinking, "Neil Diamond," you might actually like it.
I don't care who it is, this song is a 1. I'm surprised anyone actually admitted to uploading it.

that would most likely be thanks to Rick Rubin's influence...
i'm not a fan of either effort, but this Neil is still immeasurably more palatable than the Cash karaoke (er, "cover") album.

I'm really glad this song got some play. The comments make sitting through it totally worth it!
Oh, SCARY !!
My ex-boyfriend dragged me to a ND concert a couple of years back. (My 60 year old parents actually made fun of me for going.) It was interesting to say the least. I couldn't get over the crowd... such a mix! Neil attracts all kinds. Much better song writer than singer in my opinion.

Somebody took over Bill's body the last hour.
This is terrible.
Does anyone doubt that he was wearing a bib while recording this?

ROTFL
This isn't too bad. I could use about 50 fewer repeats of the chorus though.
This is great. Nice followup to Van Morrison. I never heard this song but I will buy the album now. It's Neil's gift that he can evoke buried emotions just by singing a simple line...

I was thinking, this is the worst Neil Diamond knock-off I've ever heard. Oh my god... it's even worst than I imagined. It's.... him.
I thought something similar when I first heard the opening credit song for Star Trek: Enterprise: "What is this, some Rod Stewart wannabe?". Turns out that Rod Stewart had previously sung the song for the end credits of Patch Adams.
testing my undying loyalty to RP...
oh bill, oh bill, thank you for turning us all on to such a wide variety of music every day...but...this...kinda...sucks...badly...
I love Neil Diamond. I was excited that a Neil Diamond song was playing. But not this. Yikes. Upload something else, quick.

Was just reading about some song today here--the Stones? yes--where people wondered whether it would rate so high were it any other band. The same in reverse applies here, I think. This is not a bad song, nor is it badly sung, and were it not a singer people love to hate, my seven would not have tripled its average.
I totally agree.
And for the person who thought it sounded like Johnny Cash - the album was produced by Rick Rubin who did those last four great Cash albums (plus Tom Petty's Wildflowers which is one of the best albums of the last 15 years or so).
Someone should also upload the version of "Delerious Love" with Brian Wilson from this album. It's just a great, low-key singer-songwriter album.

could this be more pathetic? I mean in any way? it certainly isn't repetitious, lyrically or melodically. Maybe it's just the deep and unique meaning that makes it so 'special'...

Oh Mary
Can you hear my song?
Does it make a mournful sound?
I sang it once when first I saw you
And I sing it to you now.
Oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh
Talking bout love
Mary oh Mary oh
No, I don't want nothing in between
Mary oh Mary oh
Don't tie me to words that you don't mean
Mary oh Mary oh
I'm lookin' for something I never knew
Mary oh Mary
Oh Mary
You know I'm lookin' for you
Oh Mary
You can doubt the world,
But don't ever doubt in me
I sang it once that I'd never leave you
And that's how its gonna be
Oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh
Talkin' 'bout love
Mary oh Mary oh
No I don't want nothin' in between
Mary oh Mary oh
Don't tie me to words that you don't mean
Mary oh Mary oh
I'm looking for something I never knew
Mary oh Mary
Oh Mary
You know I'm lookin' for you
Oh Mary
Let the chance go by
It may never come again
I've been around and I know what happens
And I'm too old to pretend
Oh Mary oh Mary oh
Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh
Talkin' 'bout love
Mary oh Mary oh
No, I don't want nothing in between
Mary oh Mary oh
Don't tie me to words that you don't mean
Mary oh Mary oh
I'm lookin' for something I never knew
Mary oh Mary
Oh Mary
You know I'm lookin' for you
Oh Mary
Was it just a dream
That I dreamed the other night?
I saw you there
Standing right beside me
And we finally had it right
Oh Mary oh Mary oh
Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh
Talkin' out love
Mary oh Mary oh
No, I don't want nothing in between
Mary oh Mary
Don't tie me to words that you don't mean
Mary oh Mary oh
I'm looking for something I never knew
Mary oh Mary oh
Oh Mary you know I'm looking for you
Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary oh
Mary Oh Mary oh Mary oh Mary ohhhh
