Je ne sais qu'une chose ; tu tiens
Ma joie, ma peine, entre tes mains

Tu es le souffle, le lien,
Mon enfant roi, mon magicien

[Refrain] :
Rien ne m'appartient
Mais au sud je reviens

Noyé dans le coeur des foules
C'est dans ton fleuve que je m'écoule

Quand tous les ponts d'or s'écroulent
C'est de ton air que je me saoule

[Refrain]

Les territoires inconnus
Je les parcours, je les inclus

Mon pays, mon sang, ma rue
Sont dans tes yeux, je les ai vus

Noir Désir does the best cover of Leonard Cohen's "The Partisan" that I've ever heard. Like Cohen's original, it's performed predominantly in English but with a French verse near the end. There are some great YouTube vids of it available.

Together with 16 Horsepower, yeszzz, that indeed is one bad ass cover, hear for yourself

Yeah, me too. Sad to have to punish the whole band here with a boycott (rating: 1) for one member's deplorable actions but that's the breaks.

Agree. I did the same. He killed a defenseless woman.

He could enjoy his life again after 4 years while Marie Trintigant is still dead... those 4 years did not do justice, it's much too short a time.
The music might be good but this circumstances revolt me each time I hear it, I can't support this with a good rating.

Agreed...his history is deplorable...
"On the night of 10 January 2010, Cantat's former wife Krisztina Rády
died by suicide. At the time of her death, Bertrand Cantat was present
in the house. She was discovered by their children the following day.[14]
Shortly before her death, Rády had complained of mental abuse by
Cantat. The physical abuse she complained of on the answering machine is
that he threw some objects at her, but she never mentioned that he was
assaulting her. According to Cantat, Rády's parents had spent a week
with him after the suicide.[15] Magistrates in Bordeaux investigated Cantat in connection with Rady's suicide, but ultimately decided not to press charges"

BillG - I agree in separating the art from artist but this guy is not a good guy. A real woman abuser and Murderer. Not good to glorify that.

YUP !!!!   You nailed it!!     -- No accident, I'm sure.  Good call.

Did you read that someplace else, or really discover it the way you described?   I had to explain it to someone before they could see it, and even then had to show what the details were, before they recognized that one person.

For others that can't see it, here's a translation of what the details are supposed to represent:

Overall, the cover is supposed to be a photo of ONE person, taken in extreme darkness, so little detail showed up.  The torso photo starts at the chin, down to their elbow.   Next, they modified the dark shadows slightly, so they kept the overall effect of one person, and changed via Photoshop:

 *     The horse's legs and tail are dreadlocks
 *     The rider's foot / stirrup is the chin
 *     Of the three people below, the right and left peoples' heads are the armpits,  their bodies extend the outline of the body
 *     The middle person is the sternum
 *     The arms with guns are the outline of the bottom of their breasts
 *     ? Male or Female ?

I thought it was rather brilliant, although so obscure, almost no one will figure it out.  Maybe someone good with Photoshop can illustrate how it changed better than my words.

We would need, a side-by-side picture of:
 *     -->  The "After-Photoshop, original Album Cover" and,
 *     -->  A "guess representation" of what the "original photo" that was used as the basis, before Photoshop changes were made.

Thanks for the information.  I totally agree with your sentiments, and while I have never questioned the choice of music by Bill and Rebecca, I advocate that any song involving Cantat be struck from the playlist until he dies.  Unless I'm mistaken, Cantat will still be collecting royalties every time his music gets played - and that's not where I want my monthly payment to RP to go.
Should have read comments first. Not a good person - period.
Never heard this nor this grp. Nice, very nice!
Damn.  This one hits me with that simple, slappy, acoustic bass line.  Rock, after all, is about getting out of your body and into your head.  This gets you (or at least me) there.  You can imagine an incredible dance routine to this song.  I don't like the guitar solo as much though.
I just looked at that album cover without my reading glasses on and saw the bare torso of a person with straggly dreads. Can somebody please blur their vision and tell me I'm not  being weird...thanks!
Ryan Adams  is never played on this station but a song from someone who murdered his  mistress   is OK.
Can we not give the murderer and abuser more airtime? Thx.

Wow -- thanks for the backstory. I was grooving to this till I read this. Giving it a 1 in that I can't support this artist with that background.
Nice groove but gets a big fat 1 from me for killing his squeeze.
I only know one thing; you hold
My joy, my pain, in your hands

You are the breath, the link,
My child king, my magician

[Chorus] :
Nothing belongs to me
But to the south I'm coming back

Drowned in the hearts of crowds
It is in your river that I flow

When all the golden bridges crumble
It's your air that I get drunk

I walk through them, I include them

My country, my blood, my street

The truth is rather, 99% of French radios are crap (today, not back in 1981) because they are not independent anymore and just like many media including TV channels, they now belong to weapon companies, construction empires and/or supermarket chains who have little interest at all in defending quality and alternative artists out of the mainstream commercial "soupe". You might nevertheless wanna try to lay an indulgent ear on Radio Grenouille 88.8 in Marseille, it helped me partly reconciliate with music in my native language, not only from France but also from Africa. To some extent, Grenouille has a similar approach of programmation to that of RP (independent, different, subversive, sometimes radical, often unexpected, always consistent. And with a distinctive "sound color"). Sincerely hope that will make your stay in France more enjoyable, although I agree with you it's almost impossible to enter any local store or restaurant without having to endure Chérie FM. I do know the pain. Good luck!

You must listen to the whole album. It's just amazing!
Thought this was Radiohead and was about to PSD, but then I thought I'd found one of their songs I actually liked.  Then I checked the artist.  No wonder!

Et moi, je suis en Alsace à écouter le même morceau...  Je comprends ce que tu ressens, ayant vécu quelques années en Asie du Sud Est. J'ai ressenti un la même chose lorsque je suis revenue.

I've been living away from France a long time, almost 20 years.

This song is from a time when I was briefly back in Alsace, trying to figure out what to do with my l life, and, if I would stay, what kind of life to lead there.
I came to realize that my family didn't get along very well with me being back: they got used to not seeing me so often, I wasn't really a part of it anyway.
My friends had all gone their ways, we were strangers.
I wanted a way out of my previous job, working in big institutions or private companies, where purpose is lost in size, paperwork, uselessness. I decided to apply to an international NGO, specialized in medical support and emergency, trying to do something useful with my life and leave everything behind.
To my surprise my application was well received and some months after I was on my way to China,... where I still live today.

In a way this music sums up my feelings about my hometown, family ties, old friends, memories and the desire to move on, the necessity to grow up. It always moves me deeply. In a light way.

Nifty.  I like it.  Toetappingtastic.
I like this.
In the same vein as Shriekback and all the other my spine is the base line bands of that era.
Truly this is one of the worst songs on the playlist.  Repetitive and boring.  Please let this one sink to the bottom where it belongs.

That is what I was hearing: "Spider's Web" by Joan Osborne! Definitely!! Gracias amigo. Although "Find the Cost of Freedom" is a good call too. I saw CSN&Y sing that live, in Jersey City, New Jersey, on August 9, 1974, the day Richard Nixon announced his resignation from the presidency of the U.S. CSN&Y started the show shouting a celebration with the whole audience (No Nixon fans there that night!) and then playing "Long Time Coming".

What really amazes me is how you infer the morality of an entire continent for an entire century from the ten lines you read on Wikipedia about one man. Go home Sherlock, you're drunk.

Anyway, that's a good song, but not my favourite off this album!

oldsaxon has the dubious distinction of being the only person I have ever seen on the internet, or anywhere else for that matter, defend the North Korean government.  He is a socialist.

Read the book The Orphan Master's Son, which won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction and is haled by critics across the board, around the world.  It was written by a Stanford professor (yeah, that right-wing bastion, Stanford).  It goes into explicit detail of the murderous regime in North Korea and it is one of the best works of fiction in recent memory (also read Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall).

KILLER MUSIC!
This is great!  And I must have thought so earlier, since I've already voted it 8.  (Thanks for the translated lyrics!  Ain't they speakin' da truth?)
Repetitive, repetitive.
Ditto.
Love it

Is this like the French Iron and Wine or something?
I love this album! Quite different from the previous ones, but so good.

Most of the band members are from Bordeaux area, most famous for their wines, South-West of France, and as most of the French having to be in the Capital for a reason or another, home is the dearest place, full of memories, roots and sprouts...

The King Child

I only know one thing
You hold my joy, my pain in your hands.

You are the breath, the link,
my king child, my magician.

Nothing belongs to me
(But) To the south I return

Drowned in the heart of crowds
It's in your river that I flow across.

When all the golden bridges collapse
It's from your air that I get drunk

Nothing belongs to me
(But) To the south I return

I run through and include
The Unkown territories.

My country, my blood, my street
are in your eyes, I saw them.

Such a cool sounding song... don't really need a translation! :)
waiting for "Le vent ..."

Bill, there are other songs on that album... Try "Le vent nous portera".

Is that so? Je me demande si vous avez cette opinion a cause de la fait que vous parlez seulement anglais.

Laissez-moi--et tous les autres ici--tranquille, et va au diable!

Capiche, Sparky?

Sparky? Lol.
