In days gone by
There was a king
A fool for love
And all it brings
So high and wise
Could read your mind
A fool for love
And love is blind
A crowded street
An empty train
A fool for love
You cry in vain
A fool for love
A fool for love
A fool for love
In days gone by
There was a queen
A fool for love
And all it means
Red ruby lips
Don't touch me eyes
A fool for love
And love is blind
A fool for love
A fool for love
A fool for love
Like flowers in the rain
I'm twisted up inside
I'll never be the same
I hear the same old lines
You played me for a fool
You really hurt my pride
A fool for love
A fool for love
A fool for love
In days gone by
There was a king
A fool for love
And all it brings
So high and wise
Could read your mind
A fool for love

Pretentious art school type? Are you aware that many musicians spent time in art school?
The nature of art school and art in general is to push the creative envelope and the art form as much as possible (while learning about painting, drawing, color etc). Those artists take that same approach to music. Exhibit A: 3 of the 4 Talking Heads who met at Rhode Island School of Design.
As far as pretentious, every school has got its pretentious students. From what I have read, Ferry had a big hand in the creative excellence and "twist" of the first two records. And he was THE songwriter in the band. The subsequent albums reflect a return to his roots: a love of crooners, R&B, more traditional songwriting.
I'm not a Bryan Ferry fan - never have been.
For me, Roxy Music was one genius (Eno), one pretty darn good guitarist (Phil Manzanera), Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson (good musicians) and Mr. Ferry (a pretentious art school type who took the twist I liked out of the first two albums and replaced it with unending garbling of lyrics and flagrantly overwrought Hallmark-moment dance rock.)
Ferry drives me up the wall like nails on a blackboard. Or rather, he represents a rock version of the movie 'Titanic', noodling schamncy-romancy schlockmeister junk.
His rendition of 'Take me to the River' qualifies as a WMD as far as I am concerned. He's lucky Al Green is a Pastor and won't consider retribution for destroying a great song.

In the album pic he looks like he might be puking. I might be soon as well.
Beautiful and layered. Love it.

Lots of Eno in this! Wonderful song!!
This song has a creepy, ethereal quality to it that I adore.
And you're right. Even in "Do the Strand", by far the best bit is when he stops singing.

Y'know, you shouldn't sugarcoat it. You should tell us how you really feel. BTW, it would seem some musicians you admire (Manzanera, Eno, and MacKay) would disagree with your assessment of Ferry's skills. As would I.

in total accord.. In fact I have to put on "Do the Strand" right now just to erase this and restore a semblance of dignity to the man.

Always grand to hear the so-cool Mr. Ferry!
he did a bossa nova album that's pretty cool.
I luh this. It's luhly. Ery ery luhly.
Love his voice, love the guitar fills on this....

I think you have to be V-deaf! There is no wrong with Bryan's LUV I'll tell you ;-)
Did you know that he'll release an album with Dylan covers on 5th of March? He's going on tour 1 March.
With him on the record are Leo Abrahams, Guy Pratt, Chris Spedding, Paul Carrack, Zev Katz,
Andy Newmark, Colin Good, Warren Ellis and Eno on one song.
And oh my God how excited I am when thinking of the new Roxy Music studio album in the fall!!!
Also with some Eno...
May I just say for the record that Bryan Ferry was one of the highlights of eightie's pop. That dreamy, half there, half not slippery voice, great songs, great arrangements, great instrumentation.
Slave to Love, Don't Stop the Dance, More than This, etc. There was a lot that he did that I don't care for, but the stuff that works just holds up so well.
I was in a record store the other day. Someone brought up Roxy Music, and a guy who worked there said "*sigh* I've had to share every woman I know with Bryan Ferry." He's so handsome still!

There's loads of old Roxy on the LRC: Out Of The Blue, Every Dream Home A Nightmare

The liner notes say Chris Spedding, Martin Wheatley, Pete Glenister, and Mick Green. Lead's probably Spedding. Not a Knopfler in sight...or sound.

Yep, you're right, not Dave Stewart but Chris Spedding.... he's the ONE rumored to have played on the Sex Pistols' NMTB and he's great!

You are aware that Bryan Ferry has been in the Music Biz since the early 70s? So... Chicken and egg....

Sniff.. Reminds me when I was somewhat younger and in love: Late night dancing - very close ..
You just have to respect a man who fell for a Texas Lady!!

I really haven't followed Ferry much since the early 90s, so it was nice to hear something relatively new (2002). This comes close to some of his vintage stuff, though it doesn't quite reach the hights of More Than This or Slave to Love (my all time fave--from Streetlife). But yeah, the guitar work is tasty.
One of my faves on his newest. Reminds me of his other romantic-angst tunes from yesteryear.
Another Ferry Wank Fest...

I AM a big BF fan, but i bet there are those out there who can guess who's on the guitar that don't even care much for BF
Not a big BF fan, but this one is veeeeeeery cool!

Ferry solo will never compare to Ferry with Roxy. I like the feel of this piece, though. Nothing comes close to "Avalon" IMHO.

Okay kiddies. Stop fighting now. There is room in the musical universe for both...am as big a Stones fan as I am a Roxy/Ferry/Eno fan. It's all good, baby. Just different... even Jerry Hall likes them both heh heh.

Okay, so I take um, Emotional Rescue, (off of Emotional Rescue)and lay it out on the counter on plenty of newspaper, freshly honed fish knife in hand. Where is all that music? Is it behind that line about the "Fine Arab Chaaaagchaaa"? Because I always thought that line was kind of phoning it in.
Prog Rock meets Lounge. Croon on, Brian...
How fitting for my mood today....

Timeless? Not sure, but always nearby: just pinch a little skin on the front of your neck and shake it while you talk and you'll sound just like him!

Second time I\'ve heard this on RP. First was already too much. No offense, but this is whiny, boring crud.
Another fines song by Mr. Ferry.
I\'ll never tire of him.

An elephant?
Sometimes his choice of material, cover tunes in particular, leaves me scratching my head. But this is a beautiful blend of vocal, production, and lyric.
feh
I saw Bryan Ferry live last night in Hollywood. Most Excellent. His band was great, especially Sistah Sarah Brown on B.Vox. She is a fox.

Amazing that you could put these three in the same category at all, unless it's just a category of your personal dislikes. In which case I agree with you on two out of three - I think Bryan is godlike!
Innovative like Byrne or Bowie. Three very different sounds, three eclectic and awesome artists.
One can never get enough Bryan Ferry. Great on record, better live. This new album is great.... play more!

It can also be, you got more used to weird singing. ;-)
But, indeed now you mention it, he sings with less vibrato, more smoothly.

One of the smoothest voices in the biz! Nice.
