I don't remember last night but they took my picture
There was a car in the ocean off of Suicide Bridge
The heart collector had his hands on me
At the edge of the world looking up
I heard what you couldn't say to me
You gave it away when you said it to her
You're a secret that I tell myself
Running through a thousand lives
Hoping there's one on the other side
At the edge of the world looking up
You're so afraid of what you want that you don't want it anymore
You wrote your message on my back and left but time will pull us to the floor
I don't know when I came to and remembered your fingers
I went back to the house but it was a vacant lot
This matchbook you wrote on is all I've got
Am I falling, going down
Dreaming and singing without a sound?
At the edge of the world looking up
There was a car in the ocean off of Suicide Bridge
The heart collector had his hands on me
At the edge of the world looking up
I heard what you couldn't say to me

there's a joke about compression to be made here
The A verse reminds me of Kirsty MacColl...I like it at any rate.
Sarah Slean and Cheryl Crow hybrid. I like it.
Gratingly annoying voice imo. Had to turn the volume down.

You haven't watched the show, and you haven't met me - and that doesn't stop you.
Your opinion is uninformed and random. You're correct: It is not useful.
Although I know better than to respond to critical comments that miss the point: How is my opinion any less meaningful than yours? You apparently dislike or disregard Sam Phillips because her music was used as a theme song for a TV show. I was suggesting that this is not a very informative criterion for no longer liking the career output of a musician. Over the years, quite a number of musicians whose music I enjoy have licensed specific songs as theme music, or even as commercials. Does this then diminish their life's work and make their songs weaker? Maybe, but I don't see how or why. Anyway, if my response was not useful, how is yours? I have no problem with any variety of effectively random observations about music, although comments that enlighten or lead to further thoughts generally have more value (subjective, it's true) than statements such as "Your opinion is uninformed and random". That's my subjective, but not necessarily random opinion. As for uninformed? I lack the basis to evaluate this.

I think everyone has the right to pay homage to the Fabs and the sixties as long as it's beautifully crafted like here.

Ignore the na nas. It's not especially significant to explain that you choose to like something less because you heard it on a TV show, is it? Really? Having never seen Gilmore Girls, I guess my opinion is not useful, but I find this to be one of a number of good compositions she has made over the years. This forum is also where I learned years back that she was initially a Christian musician, which seemed to drive off some listeners. It's get a grip time!

She's pretty self-consciously channeling Lennon.
I used to love her, but then I sat through a few seasons of Gilmore Girls and her "na na na" become incredibly annoying. More power to her for getting a paying gig, but it was still annoying.

It reminds me more of cabaret music from the 1920s and '30s (e.g. Kurt Weill), which in turn influenced Paul McCartney.

Well this is pretty horrible. Glad it is almost over by the time I tuned in!

Rather reminds me of John Lennon after he left the Beatles.

now to hear Tom Waits' On the Other Side of the World...
HAHAHAHAHA! Are these lyrics funny or really sad?
By the way, the edge of the world is just past your fingertips, right?

Okay Bill. Time to bring the mood up a bit, please.

Good song, not her best though.
I'm a huge fan, and always check in on her. Her latest is very good and different.
She's always interesting and stimulating, though I still find her 80s CDs the best - the T-Bone produced stuff (Martinis & Bikinis, Cruel Inventions). Yes they are very Beatley, and that's a major positive. But the lyrics are great too - when she was escaping (and commenting on) her Leslie Phillips years as a Christian rock figurehead. So many cool lyric puzzles.
Hey RP - play some of that stuff! Like "Lying", "Strawberry Road", "Standing Still" (yeah!), "Same Changes" etc.

Woo! Happy New Year Sam!
Sam Phil lips for World President!
Reminds me of Emitt Rhodes and you know who Emitt reminded everyone of.
Second song by her this week.
I got excited thinking this was new Sam Brown. Silly me

Yes it sounds very much like it!
Its the instruments and the mix... sounds exactly the same. I love the piano sound... a bit "dirty".

Absolutely - they're one of her strongest influences. I saw her open up for Bruce Cockburn in Austin in the mid 80s and they both were fab-u-lous. Sad about the dissolution of her marriage to T-Bone Burnett, but apparently they're still friends (good enough for him to continue to brilliantly produce her albums)...
gotta go to wvuv. can't stand the succession of songs today. once in a while playing a good song doesnt cut it.

Well gee, I wanted to comment on this song, but given the lack of published lyrics (as per google), I'm hardly qualified.
I really don't understand the point in writing a song, if you don't want people to know what it is. :(
Got Ears?
Playful and cool and serene all at the same time. Who is this Sam Phillips and why does he sound like a woman? (just kidding)
I had never heard her before. Oh, my. I\'m headed to Amazon right now. Thank you, thank you Bill & Rebecca! (That is, thanks I think. I\'m going to go broke listening to this station!)
I often feel that I am on the edge of the world looking out, trying not to be too judgemental.
if her live shows are good
