Well, I had just checked in when the sun came up
After ten hours on the bus.
I was staring at the stains on the ceiling, baby,
Trying not to think about us.
But then someone in a room five-oh two
started doing the thing that we used to do.
Every bang, every boom,
It was just like it was happening in my own room.
'Cause they've got paper walls, paper walls,
Paper walls... ooh, yeah.
I closed the curtain, I shut the light,
I heard the highway moan.
Next thing I remember they were having a fight,
And then, she was all alone.
I heard her cry in the darkest hour,
I heard it echo in the hotel shower,
I heard her start packing her things, so,
I called her number and I heard it ring...
Right through the paper walls, paper walls,
Paper walls, oooh yeah, now.
I've never seen such a sight before,
The way she looked when she opened the door.
Hush now baby don't make a sound,
When all your love comes a-tumblin' down...
Just like a paper wall, paper wall,
Paper wall, Ooh just like a paper wall.
It ain't the road that kills you, baby,
It's the all night calls;
It ain't the road that kills you, baby,
It's just the paper walls
After ten hours on the bus.
I was staring at the stains on the ceiling, baby,
Trying not to think about us.
But then someone in a room five-oh two

Sounds a little like Lyle Lovett to me. That's a good thing.

Lake Street Dive's Neighbor Song (Making love upstairs) would be a good follow as well
Ok. So the subject of the song is staying in a hotel, hears a couple making love in an adjacent, then fighting, and swoops in to take advantage of the situation. It just strikes me as being creepy.

100% agreed, both specific to this song and MORE Cray in general would be good too. Long Live RP!!
Robert Cray's "Right Next Door (Because Of Me) would be a good followup

They do have similar voices, but the music doesn't sound much like something Weller's style to me.

We were lucky enough to see Marc play at Union Chapel in Islington London in the summer of 2017. Voted one of London's top venues by fans, this is a working church built in around the 1880's, with a great layout meaning everyone gets a great close up view and fabulous acoustics.
When he asked the audience for any requests, to my delight someone shouted Paper Walls, also one of my favorites
Marc then said, OK that's a tough one, I don't think I've played it for a couple of years.
There followed a note perfect performance of the song from Marc and the band.
A massively underrated song writer and performer.

He is playing at the Egyptian Theatre in Dekalb, Illinois on Nov 9th. It's a cool egyptian revival restored theatre - looking forward to it. Our friends who are joining us have never heard of him, so it should be great.
