When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me

So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand, stand by me
Stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me

And darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me

Darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Won't you stand now, oh, stand
Stand by me
When all of your friends is gone

Yeah, after a while, 11 wouldn't be good enough and we'd want a 12. A form of hedonic adaptation for song ratings....

Perhaps more to the point, why is there no rating between 'Quite Likeable' (7) and 'Most Excellent' (8). I guess that the descriptions are open to subjective interpretation but personally, I would rate quite a lot of tracks between 7 and 8.

Evidently, you really dig abusive male vocalists.  Regarding "Stand By Me", you are outnumbered about a gazillion to one.
for me one of the most intensive love songs

We danced to this at our wedding soon to be 35 years ago. Still standing by each other.
Bill, you've been playing this a lot lately. Which is just fine by me... this song will never get old.
Great song!

To me it's not better but equally satisfying.  And of course, being a 10 year kid I happened to see Lennon's studio video first. He was troubled person in many ways but he knew to give credit where it is due.

Beauty in motion ! Sung and Centred by Truth!
Will someone please confiscate that electric guitar?
👏
One of those songs that demands to be turned way, way up
grande classico ed in italiano dal fantastico Celentano!
Forever enjoyed
This is the only song Ben ever recorded.

Yes, great tune, but he had several Top 40 solo hits, as recent as 1975, as well as earlier hits singing lead with The Drifters.
This original version doesn’t die!
A song that, at its time, must've been extraordinary. But, after decades of hearing the extremely simplistic music and syrupy strings, I'm really done with it.
If I had to be a "one hit wonder," I'd be okay if this was my legacy.

That phrase was actually used long before Stan Lee and Marvel Comics popularized it, but it's where I first saw it as well.

Never Gets Old

An absolutely transcendent cut that will be played for generations.  There's something archetypal about the message.  Ben E. King's voice is terrific and the arrangement/production is commented on at length below.

This was the genius of Ahmet Ertegun, his brother Nesuhi, and Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records. They did things that no one else had even thought of, much less crafting them into monster pop hits. I highly recommend the Atlantic "R&B 1947-1974" box set.
My REAL LIFE MOVIE moment was with this song playing in the background.

Yup, that bass and rhythm just slides right in behind MM&W.  And so the vibe continues in finest RP style this well-soundtracked evening...
Always liked this song but I think John Lennon's version is better, with more feeling.
Theme song for a lot of present-day philandering politicians ... ?
one word, classic
The music of my youth, this and the Drifters bring me back to being at Coney Island.

If you don't want to hear Stand by Me "17 times since Thursday" then turn off your oldies radio station, wtf?

normally I let your stream of music come over me, eager to hear new stuff, sometimes in awe sometimes it leaves me wondered; sometimes I run to my computer to see what you've discovered this time. Now, this one I know ;-) but it also hit's bulls eye for the both of us. thank you Bill and Rebecca for this wonderful radiostation. (from the Netherlands)

Sort of funny, I pretty much only give 10s to songs that I NEVER get tired of hearing. Great songs that seem 'overplayed' only get a 9. But I get where you're comin' from.

Excellent segue from Medeski Martin and Woods, except the Segway guy just ran his biwheel device over a cliff..
Don't mind me, just free association happening on a rainy Thanksgiving  weekend night.

Always dug his solo stuff.  His stint with the Drifters was good too.

9 to a 10
One of the greatest songs ever written and at the same time so simple.
I think that the cover that Bill has displayed is from the UK greatest hits album, issued after this song was used in a jeans commercial. (Before the movie, I think.) Anyone remember the ad? Wasn't it the one with the pretty boy soaking in his jeans in a bath? Any women over 35 are sure to remember it...
One of the few true classics.

Ben E. King - "Stand by me" Live

When the night has come, and the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we will see
No, I won't be afraid, oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
So darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me
*Solo*

And darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me
So darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, oh stand, stand by me

John Lennon - "Stand By Me" Live

"  "Stand by Me" is the title of a song originally performed by Ben E. King and written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, original release in 1961, covered by many artists."

" When i was 5 years old, my mother told me happiness was the key to life. when i went to school they asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up. i wrote down "happy ". they told me i didn' t understand the assignment. i told them they didn' t understand life " - *John Lennon*

A very special song for me, and a lost friend. Thanks Bill.
The song is simply a classic. It is a great expression of love. Of course, I think of the movie "Stand By Me" which adds even more nostalgia for me - having come of age at the same time as that movie.

Hi,

Have you heard about the Playing for Change organization?  They have a cool version of this song, played by dozens of different musicians all over the world:

Of course, they now have a different song video up...keep an eye on this site!  It is a good thing...

Although I didn't know it as a kid (grew up in the 70s/early 80s), I have always liked it from the first time I did hear it.  Love John Lennon's cover, as well.
Beautiful song. Ben E. was a great voice for the Drifters and solo.

But I love the edge of pain that Lennon put on his remake.

Amazing song, and by far the best version is Ben E. Kings.
Stand By Me is OUTSTANDING
To the best of my knowledge, this is the only song with many ratings (339 as of this date) which has zero 1s.

Earlier this morning while listening to The Zombies' "Time of the Season", I thought how lovely it would be to follow that with John Lennon's version of "Stand By Me." Then later Bill does it one better with Ben E. King's original. Nice.
One of those times when the rewind feature comes in handy, gotta listen to that one again!
