I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And past your door, but you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
Now you've disappeared somewhere, like outer space
You've found some better place

And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain

Could you be dead?
You always were two steps ahead, of everyone
We'd walk behind while you would run
I look up at your house
And I can almost hear you shout down to me
Where I always used to be

And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain

Back on the train, I ask why did I come again?
Can I confess, I've been hanging round your old address?
And the years have proved
To offer, nothing since you've moved
You're long gone, but I can't move on

And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you

I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And past your door, I guess you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
Now you've disappeared somewhere, like outer space
You've found some better place

And I miss you,
And I miss you,
You found some better place

And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, yeah, like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, and I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, yeah, like the deserts miss the rain
The deserts miss the rain
Like the deserts miss the rain
Like the deserts miss the rain,
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, yeah, like the deserts miss the rain

I like this version of the song, BUT this comment made me laugh out loud.  If you're going to 'dis' a song, this is the best way to do it, in my humble opinion.
I see that RP doesn't have any of Tracey's solo stuff listed, but it's worth looking into...
You could not escape this song on radio stations and in bars/shops nationwide here in the UK upon release - especially the Todd Terry remix - it's now very welcome for me to hear again after all this time - thanks for playing! πŸ‘

Oh, and this album as a whole is magnificent πŸ‘Œ

They are so flipping cool.
New album sooooo good too.

Your comment here prompted me to go check out and buy the new album, FUSE. Very cool & contemporary and more soulful than most other crap being blasted out trying to get a similar vibe. Never would have discovered this without RP -- thanks for posting and once again, thanks RP!

those who know me, know i'm not a huge fan of female vocalists - though that is changing as i age, i find - but i've always loved this outfit's music. so, so good.

The best!! Have always loved their mellow vibe,  so easy to listen to.  Love Them.
I first heard her voice in 1982 and I  fell in love immediately. It was easy for her since my school was all male with one female teacher, and I had 2 younger brothers! It was like living in a desert and then  out came her album...A Distant Shore...The title was just perfect.  We had a record player in the sixth form house near the school and would hide there between classes listening to her voice while dreaming of adventures to come!

The cover strangely instructed us not to pay more than 99p for it. Amazingly my friend and I  with one copy each  had covered nearly 3% of the total  production costs of 138 pounds sterling! It was and still is my greatest investment.

Love 'both' versions but this original version edges it for me as it showcases the brilliant vocal and heartbreaking lyrics

Why do some people think that it's so damn clever to comment on the logic of song lyrics?  Language in this form, music that is, is meant to be evocative; not a text book.  I suspect that if you think otherwise, your bedroom walls had posters of trucks rather than bikinis.  One is fantasy, the other is transport.  And you likely never could figure one from the other...
Tracy Thorne is fantastic as is EBTG… deserts definitely miss rain - idiot
The deserts are just fine without the rain, thank you very much
Another great hit from the legendary producer Bruce Dickinson.  He makes gold records, baby!

I remember listening to this song on the radio when it came out in 1994. I was only 11 years old but it always stuck with me as a nostalgic reminder of my childhood in the 90s. Every time I hear it, the lyrics take me back.

I saw them many years ago at the Sunshine Theater in Albuquerque. This nicely dressed guy gently placed a bouquet of flowers on the stage.  Tracey rudely kicked them aside. I lost a lot of respect for her but still love that voice.
such a great tune and group - Tracy is something special

Such an inappropriate comment. I did laugh out loud, though.
As a singer myself, it sometimes astonishes me how some people can just open their mouth and out comes this sound. I know it takes work and practice to get there, but still... What a great voice.
I have a soft spot for this in my past so it gets a 7 for memory invocation.
This might be (?have been?) "pop", but her voice against the lead guitar and bassline.....ahhh, that just works.
Solid 8 here.
does she have tits?
I don’t miss the rain - it’s been raining for days here and I’m sick of it. Then again I live in a cultural desert rather than a literal one.
Excellent song from an excellent album.
Not a bad song on this entire album.
Gave it only a nine - the remix is a 10'er.

But it is lovely to hear the original aswell...
"Mango!...."
Hot dang that was a smooth transition from Sof Tukker's Deja Vu Affair. Well Done BillG!
He told me that he had gotten a promotion and was moving to Kansas City to run the district regional office for sales and maintenance, plus his sister and her kids live in Topeka so he would be closer. He must not have told her?
Just a response to all the comments about deserts missing rain. Most deserts have a very brief rainy season. Without any rainfall, there really wouldn't be any life at all in them. So the lyric makes sense to me. There may be some exceptions like the Atacama in Chile. I believe the moisture received may just be in the form of mist.

Edit: Wow, I sound so pedantic. Poetry doesn't need to be logical.
a Euro Trash Anthem! Especially the electronic re-re-remixes
Loved and still love everything about it.
The lyrics, the production with those synths, the nostalgic-melancholic album cover, the guy-producer-and-girl-singing electronic music era.
A great love song. A 10 from this kid.
{#Bananasplit}Gawd ... this is still so good.{#Bananasplit}
A little less tambourine would be nice.  Love the feeling this song invokes.
Why cant the desert miss the rain
Oh, I always thought this was Dido. Huh.
Absolutely love this!
Missing the Todd Terry Remix, much emotion to me than this original (but feeling flat) version
Ditto. Scrollers beware!

I see it as a metaphor for a longing for something you've never experienced, an aching in your heart & soul. It is like how I very occasionally get a very strong craving for alcohol (more precisely, to get drunk), yet the only thing I've ever had was a sip of PBR when I was six ("Hey, what's that?" "Have a little bit." "YUCK!").

One of the most captivating voices of all time. Classic EBTG. Miss this band, but love binging on their 80's, 90's stuff. Great romantic stuff. Plenty of fond memories.

Deserts miss the rain, but they learned to live with it. Every time after a rainfall, the desert bursts into bloom, so yes, even deserts miss the rain.

Deserts are not deserts of their choosing"Oh I think I become a desert" but by weather conditions.

The Sahara used to be an ocean, then a rain forest and is now a desert.

So the lyrics make sense after all.

So then, does the ocean miss the heat?

They are (anthropomorphized) deserts. But, with rain they become something else, something better. They would like for that to happen.

Funny, looks like I was thinking the same thing as Bobert_ParkCity. Only saw his comment afterwards. But that's what has always annoyed me about this song since the first time I heard it.

Some deserts might remember: during the Neolithic Subpluvial Era (from the 7th to the 3rd millennium BC), the area which is now the Sahara Desert was apparently green and fertile and experienced wet and rainy conditions.  At least that's what the note in my fortune cookie said the other day.
Im just sayin', I find this too repetative.   yes I admit you need some sort of repatition in music, but I feel that some of todays music is just a repeated hook.   no other thought than a phrase then cut'n paste.    repeating something once, twice a few times is normal, but lets take Eltons "Are you ready for love" as an example.   it is a single verse then repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.   I find that when it gets too much, it is nothing but rubarb and the song loses its integrity.   thats all.   It is more common in electronically recorded music, a prerecorded sound from a sequencer is far more tiring to the ear than say, the repeated sound of waves on the shore as each one is impercevably different.
More cowbell.
Lovely song.  8

Repetition is an essential component of all music.  Name one song without some repetition of a phrase, beat, or progression - discounting John Cage's 4' 33".

Technically, it could be argued that 4'33" is the ultimate in repetition on the musician's part. At least the repetition of silence, which in turn makes the audience and the ambience in the performance arena vital portions of the performance. Would be even more interesting in today's world of personal electronics and microwave levels of ADHD.
