Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can?

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Cmon.... let's get it right.
thank you for beaming me back to the early 70ies, unforgotten!
Some 'interesting' memories from around 1985 raise their pointed little heads whenever I hear this. To be honest, I'm amazed I could even remember my own name back then, let alone what was going on.

A brain-curdling pleasure to hear 'Echoes', in full. any time, and especially via the auspices of Bill and his merry band.

Excuse me while I go and lie down in a darkened room...
ahhhh...the Meddle album

never gets enough attention.

I remember listening to this on cassette in the Seventies driving along a valley in Snowdonia in Wales. Not a care in the world, totally engrossed in the world of Pink Floyd. All of a sudden a very low flying jet plane from RAF Valley in Anglesey flew overhead from behind the car.  I did not see or hear its approach. Was a good job I had brown [vinyl] upholstery in the car!🐨

Oh they are good at that. We were in a similar area  (Brecon Beacons rather than Snowdonia) but on  motorbikes - a LARGE military helicopter just appeared beside us- having come up from below us in the valley. We didn't hear it - because helmets ;-). Feck that was scary!! Skid marks weren't just in the underpants!!
Thanks Bill and Rebecca

Davids version is a great live one on Live in Gdańsk.
I can't think of any other place I can hear 20+ munute song! (sorry, a masterpiece)
Cudos RP!
Dim the lights, light some candles, have some incense in the air, and float away...
Ah, and pull the volume up…
Arguably Pink Floyd masterpiece.
The Crystal Voyager end sequence linked with this is superb.

Case Western Reserve University, 1971, or 1970, Pink Floyd played this astonishing piece . A gymnasium. Still one of the most transfixing shows I have experienced. Completely straight but I was later informed that 3/4 of the mostly Case students were tripping. There was a sense of electricity in the space. This piece always carries me back
I'm sure it's been said before, but I'll say it again, Echoes lives up to it's name..!
A masterpiece..!
There isn't a radio station on this planet that would play this whole track, except this one!
Aren't we all thankful every day to have found ourselves washed up on the shores of Radio Paradise?
Lock it in and rip the knob off. You're home.
Hands down favorite Pink Floyd track... ever. Love that you play the entire track that I've been listening to since I first discovered music in the 80s.
I am very glad that the echo is reflected in my heart, reminding me of the best moments in my life
yes - fantastic

Pink Floyd played two "butchered" parts of Echoes on Pompeii, so it is not that scandalous :-)
This song reminds me of what George W. Bush said when leaving Donald Trump's 2016 inauguration speech: "That was some weird shit.”

But really pretty good!
I've been waiting for this track to show up ... So that I can tell a funny (true) story related to it.
In the mid 1970's I was a chef on a Royal Navy Polaris Submarine.  I used to enjoy my turn on night watch, baking the bread and preparing 'stuff' for the following day.  I had a little tape deck wired up to a speaker and alone in the galley, I played my favourite music to my heart's content.

I was playing Meddle.  It was almost finished when the on-watch leading hand of the sound room crew burst in on me shouting that I was in deep shit.  The captain was up, the control room was closed up and serious alarm and worry was going off.

We would dive for two months at a time ... surfacing for nothing.  On patrol, one of our primary aims was to remain undetected.   The galley on those boats was located directly below the sound room. The sound room had picked up the pinging emanating from Pink Floyd's Echoes and had mistaken it for the real thing.

Oops!
Everyone saw the funny side of it eventually but it cost me a few beers.

Did your hands feel just like two balloons?
Pink Floyd, like Radiohead, is a band I appreciate more than enjoy listening to.
I used to listen to this when I was 11 while going to sleep and it scared the bejesus out of me!
Bill there's no sound in space (a vacuum.) You need a medium for it to travel through, like air or water.
BillG - In your intro to this song you mentioned if anyone ever wondered what a sonar ping would sound like in space,  this song has a good example. However, I am a bit confused because the song was Echoes by Pink Floyd, not The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel.

Sorry. Engineer. Can't help it.
I get hyped from that first note!
Give it a rest. Jesus Christ. I like Floyd but seriously
Could not insult this track with anything other with a 10. Rock solid 10 bouncing off the limiter 10.  Turn out the lights, turn up the amp and drift for 23 minutes of pure heaven and forget your problems.

Still gives me chills........
A classic.
I had heard this on vinyl and tape, but after seeing this in the movie, "Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii," I WAS BLOWN AWAY... Wright, singing his soul out, and jamming on the keyboards, and Gilmour, singing, standing in the sand and ash, and playing his absolute heart out... Waters, slamming the bass with passion, and Mason, just whacking the hell out of the drums... It's a Rock Art Masterpiece, on every level! And -- doing a show for the fossilized! -- how JAM!

Like The Orb: Blue Room 40 minute version :-)
Bill, you can't hear sound in space. It's devoid of matter (atmosphere) and therefore there's nothing to carry the vibrations. But I suspect you already knew that. It is a trippy song.
Vanguards of a new sound. And in a way, this entire track is an early sketch for the later album, Dark Side of the Moon.
Echoes is an amazing song and one of the many tunes Pink Floyd has done that makes me describe their style as impressionistic rock.  I was fortunate to see the Floyd during the Dark Side of the Moon tour.  After they played the entire album straight through, they played Echoes.  Between the music and the lighting effects, it felt like I was actually descending down into the ocean.
Geez...these guys were awesome when they worked together.
Only on RP! Thanks Bill - what an awesome surprise!

Meddle is one of my PF favs. Such good stuff! Love that RP's got this on rotation now. It is a good fit.
An absolute must play once every camping trip for my wife and I while sitting at the picnic table playing cards or backgammon.  Love this album and all the memories it brings.
September 19, 1987.  JFK Stadium, Philadelphia PA.  120,000+ people in attendance (including myself and many friends from all over the east coast).  Opening song:  Echoes.

Fantastic and never to be forgotten.

I rarely offer a 10/10, but this demands it.  Thanks, Bill.
Turn out the lights and turn up the amps...
First time hearing this played on RP. What a treat today!!!!!!
Okay - I had to stop working - look out the window at the sun and think 'that was then and what is now' - AND I'll make a cup of tea!

Oh, yes - thanks RP
Not just incredible in its arrangement of instruments and melody, but the beautiful poetry of the lyrics. These guys are without a doubt the best band to have walked the Earth.

agreed heard this live in Toronto...blew me away
Well now I can't leave the house for a half hour
OMG! how good?
my favorite Floyd song ever ! Such a heavy riff, check out the live at Pompeii on you tube and
One day as a freshman in college, walking down the hall, I heard the opening BING of this. The door was open, and there was Marc with a toy hammer that made this exact tone when it hit the wall. It had come in a box of "ready for finals" stuff his parents had sent.

So we started talking. It's been 45 years that we've stayed friends, playing in a band, having a winning trivia bowl team, watching each other do our own things. He's friends with Brian May, has his photos of Pluto in the Smithsonian, and has discovered the furthest known object in the solar system. Me? I've just been along for the ride.

BING
Simply wow... a masterpiece.  I'll never forget listening to this in my dorm room at Penn State one magic night in about 1981.     I was just a point in space... Wow...

And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

They came in through the green windowpanes...

Me ?  I like the song, period.  That it's a floyd song makes it a bonus.

I've always had a penchant for songs that inspired rolling a towel up and placing it at the bottom of the door in the dorm.  Back when it was necessary to do those kind of things ...
Echoes is so good that Andrew Lloyd Webber had to nick a bit of it for The Phantom of the Opera!
The "strawberry fields" of pink floyd: a track which is not part of their iconic stand out album but neverthless marks a milestone in music.

Try out the latter live version von Gilmoiur/wright on the live in gdansk.  the song benefits from the progress/maturity of their creators - unbelivable great
When I was fourteen, I had high fever and I was listening to lp with this song on it. It was quite an interesting experience{#Cool}.
That groove gets me howling like a wolf at 11,000 feet in the Rockies. I can’t explain it. Happens to me every time.
 darxmurf wrote:

I like it 'cause it's pre-"The Wall" Pink Floyd. Was and still am great fan of their early uniquely innovative style; not anymore after that, because everything they ever did sounded musically the same to my ears.  Plus, their lyrics eternally went along the same depressing theme "life sucks and then you die" which, beside becoming boring to hear over and over again, did not appeal to me at all after my "teenager rebellion" phase

And lattely, this Wayers' #resist affiliation...
The best track EVER, accompanying me since 1971. 10+
magic...
THANKS FOR ECHOES!!!

Is this a trick question?
Well... do people like it because it's from pink floyd?
Exctly the time needed to drive from home to the cinema :)
and what is the albatross now?
Back in nineteen-dickety-do, I used to play this album EVERY night when going to bed.  I was in college, and Pink Floyd steered me through those years in compelling ways.  I was almost upset that they because so famous, as they were an obscure psychedelic band that were very personal to me.  Oh well.  Their later work made their fame worthwhile.
Now I can get on with what I was doing, I had to stop for this.

It is 32 degrees here on a bank holiday Monday, I hope that my neighbours have the same memories of this track.

Thanks Bill, that is a 10+ track.
Also used to listen to this on my way to work at 3am in the early seventies- not on8 track, but cassette. It was still great. With apologies to any households near to traffic lights where I had to wait for a green light.
Very Nice thank you
Thanks Bill!

Had this in my car on 8 track in 1971...one of my fav Floyd tracks EVER!!!

Cheers!!!
Last Play: Never {#Sad}
Maybe Bill will play this next time he watches 2001: The Pink Floyd song 'Echoes', which clocks in at 23:27 on the album Meddle was inspired by and is perfectly timed to the 'Stargate' sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
How funny, this song comes up as THE #12 SONG in the RP Classics list, and ITS NEVER BEEN PLAYED?
There seems to be some sort of disconnect here.  Personally,I don't think it should be #12, all of Pink Floyd's music comes up with way too high of a rating in the Classics list IMHO.

You would think that one day this song will be played here on RP. Even if it's 3am on a Saturday or Sunday morning. It would surely indelibly etch that moment in time on someone's memory bank.
DSOTM got me interested in Pink Floyd, but Echoes totally blew me away.  The Live at Pompeii version I think is still the best; Meddle version is a bit polished.

Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii - Echoes

"This is paradise."

Pink Floyd is an English rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows. They have undoubtedly been one of rock music's most successful acts.

Why I love them - I love them because Dark Side of the Moon changed my life. It made me look at music in a whole new light, as I'm sure it did for many others. wnick87

David Gilmour, Richard Wright - "Echoes" Live-Acoustic Version, from Abbey Road (2008)
"A perfect rendition of a Shepard-Risset glissando at the end. Part of the magic that's "Echoes".
Remembering you always, Richard. We were truly blessed to have you here among us."

Last played in 2001?  That's a crying shame.
One of my all-time favourite songs ever, and certainly the best PF song. Please play this song once in a while... but only the meddle version!
Never, ever play a butchered or "shortened" version of echoes.  That is a travesty.  The original version from Meddle, or don't play it at all.

for the memory of Richard Wright   -

** 10 **

Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time. Echoes is by far the best piece of music they ever recorded. I wish there was an 11 to distinguish it from my other very favorite cuts. The atmospherics & intangible or unconcious elements of this song are part of a mental journey that the listener takes with the composers. This is a tour de force of songwriting genius.
This is Floyd at their best. If it's too long to play the entire piece -- and it's such a shame to cut it down -- then play part one of the "Live at Pompeii" version.
either play the 24 minute original meddle version or dont play it at all. lets not insult echoes.
...the fact that this is already in the libary makes it all the more a travesty that the butchered version gets prominent rotation instead...
This one has been my favourite through 15 years, I will never stop loving it. I feel pity for all who havent heard it yet.
Please Bill play this song, it's only like 7 minutes longer then the one you currently have in rotation

Not to worry. There's that version in the "echoes" album that is in rotation. Does not *rotate* that much here, but hey there's a lot of other floyd songs going around here too. Sterling stuff this.
