I don't know which of my friends designed this poster but since it was done before classes started I'm assuming it was a professor. Of a program in the same building as the Graphic Design program. There were no good decisions made here. Not one. It took great restraint on my part to not immediately attack it on facebook but as I said, someone I know did this.
I'm not a designer. But I would note that they used portrait and landscape modes appropriately for most of the pictures. But yeah, hard to read.
In MS Word one selection will overtake the other - can't have both. I don't know about other programs though. I haven't justified type in a very long time (1980s-'90s) either - it was usually just for multi-column pages like newsletters or magazines/catalogs whenever I specified "justify" to the typesetters.
That's my recall too. Last time I remember engaging justify was in duplicating an obit from a newspaper, and wanted an exact dupe, font matched and all. Word remains such a PITA compared to ye olde days with WordPerfect.
Justified with centering? Is that doable? It's been so long since I justified any text. (har! )

Yeah, it looks like they set some custom, wide kerning or some kind of justify setting. I guess they used MS Publisher or something similar. Whatever it was, it looks kinda goofy.

Ugghh. It looks like something designed in Microsoft's Publisher, or even Word. Really amateurish. And they obviously love monospaced fonts. smh
Actually is that monospace, or did they put a space in between each character?

Kind of want to scream when there's a Facebook group for professional graphic designers to discuss business and mid-to-higher-level ideas and it's going great, lots of good discussion, then someone asks how to load a free font into GIMP and the whole forum is now a smoking wreck on the side of the Al Gore Memorial Information Superhighway.

I think that's my biggest high school regret. I didn't take welding. Stupid, stupid, stupid. hiccup can weld. Makes me feel like less of a man.
One of my first girlfriends dumped me, dropped out of school, and became a welder. I took a couple of lessons from the sculpture teacher at uni - mainly because it scared the shit out of me. I was useless at the welding part but the cutting torch was a blast. Served me well when I did experiments in grad school where I had to seal powder in quartz tubing using a hydrogen-oxygen torch while pulling a vacuum on it. Makes you jump when you inadvertently melt through the tube and the flame gets sucked up the rubber hose you are holding.
I've been a machinist, and handled several welders. I'm proficient with gas and adequate with electric. It is always fun to do, and when you get a really nice weld it puts a big smile on your face. One day when I get a bigger shop together there will be a welding corner.

You can get little wire-feed welders for next to nothing if you watch the classifieds; I keep thinking I'll get one and build a something-something. Actually I want 3-legged patio furniture because our patio is uneven. Too tricky to do out of wood, but steel would be quick.
They're like $80 at Harbor Freight, and I've been tempted plenty of times. I actually borrowed the father-in-law's little buzzbox rig years ago when I was doing some bodywork on the Subaru. Managed to make a rust-free front fender out of two well-ventilated donors, but the backside welds were not pretty. One of these days, when I have some time I'll try again.

Hmmm, I started this post thinking 'That one little class served me well' and could serve her well but now I've talked myself into understanding why Scott wants his daughter far, far away from Graphic Arts. Back to Photoshop.
Mostly it's because she could teach the class or ask me and I'll tell her how and save a bunch of time.
We had wood shop when I was in high school but not welding. I think welding is a fascinating skill that incorporates engineering, chemistry, art, and money.
I have a couple of friends who are welders/metal workers; they both make pretty good livings at it . Almost all of their work is commercial, not residential, except for the occasional wrought iron stairway or railings. I think part of the reason they do pretty well is that there aren't many welders around this county compared to other tradesmen - even compared to other certified tradesmen like electricians and plumbers.
