You're lazy just stay in bed
You don't want no money
You don't want no bread
If you're drowning you don't clutch no straw
If you're drowning you don't clutch no straw
You don't want to live you don't want to cry no more
Well my trying ain't done no good
I said my trying ain't done no good
You don't make no effort no not like you should
Lazy you just stay in bed

ONE OF THOSE SONGS where my buddy Mike and I would be stretched out in bean-bag chairs after high school, passing the joint and looking up at the black light posters and solar-system-mobile on his ceiling, with this thing CRANKED so loud the speakers bucked and burbled with each jam-Hammond- and bass-note, and then his mom would pull up in the driveway and we wouldn't even hear... In fact, we wouldn't hear anything but this song until she would kick-slam open the door to his room and scream at the top of her lungs, TURN THAT CRAP DOWN! I COULD HEAR IT COMING UP THE STREET! and not a word about the weed, mind you! and Mike would mumble something until she left us alone, then he'd grumble and grouse how she had such a knack for ruining such a great jam and then finally we'd get up and go out to one of our cars and try to recapture some kind of buzz... One of Deep Purple's finest jams!
What a great description!
Hey Bill. Check the Release Date. S/B 1972.
Yes.
If you haven't already PLEASE check out the Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes cover of this. It is unbelievable.

Pretty good, but the drummer was lacking. Missed all the detail from the original and phoned it in. Hey, man, the toms are there for a reason.
Incredible player
Yep, Early 70s - Nobody could spank the Hammond like Jon Lord and Keith Emerson.
Well, maybe Greg Allman.
Early 70's, my big brother and I shared a bedroom in Brooklyn. He had an 8 track / turn table quad stereo that I was forbidden to touch.
On those rare occasions that he left his room I disobeyed and risked a beating.
Thankfully, I was never caught in the act.
Machine Head was always my first choice, followed by Workingman's Dead and Dark Side of the Moon.
More than that was usually too risky, and I didn't find ELP worth the risk.

Whar about Steve Winwood?
So did I. And then on cassette!
I've had the LP since it came out.

I should've stopped sneering at Deep Purple when Joe Satriani played with them, but this is the final nail in the particular coffin.

Deep Purple, Mark II, baby!

Thank you for this link! NICE!!!
(Would still like to hear Kenny Wayne Shepherd, or maybe Sonny Landreth, take a crack at this timeless gem.)
I just yelled "Freakin A" at my neighbors. I couldn't control myself.
You would call into your locally owned FM radio station and yell "Freakin A" when they played this song.
A 7.9 average rating? You MUST be kidding! Nothing less than Godlike.
Well, Jesus-like anyway. Real Superstar stuff. (see what I did there?)
geeeeeeez,
electric organ
we need more!
Hammond B2? Keith Emerson used to play one live with ELP.

Final nail in their coffin because of a track on a 1972 album? They're still going strong.

I think Jon Lord, the keyboardist, was trained as a classical organ player. His training kind of set DP up to stand above the crowd in terms of composition even in a metal jam band.

this is a 4th of july song
all about freedom and energy
thats what this music been about for 70 years
It's...it's...it's... rock n roll.
Where have you been?
Blackmore and Lord = magic.
c.
One of the best RnR songs from the 70s.
For all you poor, lost souls born too late....this song was one of thousands that were played on radio, albums, 8 tracks, and cassettes.
It was truly a "grand buffet" of great songs.
Today...well it's a food court in a a convienece store.
(not a complaint)
I'm a bit older than you. grew up in the peace and love period not because of it. LOL
BUT I agree more Amplifier!!!
picture clearly inspired by beatles's rubber soul.

Four out of five doctors recommend that you not spank the Hammond.
Ass was kicked, names taken.
'64 Plymouth Valiant 2-door here, slant-6 and push-button automatic parked under a shade tree with the trunk open. 8 track blaring out of those 6x9's tokin' on a number. Priceless.
Had Made in Japan serenade me while doing my homework back then

Big Daddy Ed Roth!

Now, why doesn't some new artist cover THIS?
Riding shotgun in my friend's Valient. High and beating drums on the dash in front of me. Broke the spring in his reverberator underneath.
Didn't know. Sorry Lenny.
A Christmas song to put us in the spirit of spreading joy, kindness, and forgiveness.
That sounds like an incredible show! Now where did I put that time machine? I gotta go see that. (Oh yeah, YouTube!)
No 'Made in Japan' cuts on RP?
I never like Live Albums.
Made in Japan is the rare exception. It is what a live album should be: Start a song, Jam for a long time, Finish a song....
Still a solid 10
I don't think the term "prog rock" was widely used (if at all) at the time this album was recorded.
1972?
My recollection is admittedly fuzzy.... but I seem to recall hearing/using the term 'prog rock' by 1974 at the latest.
This song is 46 years old and their keyboard-guitar jamming is still jaw dropping!
The depressing thought: there is no band from the last 20-25? years that will even try this!
What happened to RnR?
apparently not...
‘Lazy’ is pure blues-boogie, dominated by organ effects. The placement is simple and emulates a live performance in focus. Organ opens centre, then is placed right, and guitar sits left, yet then the guitar moves to centre for a solo, then the organ re-takes the centre for another solo. When they play together they’re panned guitar (L) and organ (R.)
rtrt, thanks for pointing that out. I must have had my left and right channels the wrong way around so I swapped them over and Richie Blackmore's guitar is coming out the left speaker and Jon Lord's organ is on the right speaker now.
Yeah!

But then, Garth stole it from Bach (Tocatta and Fugue in D minor), so who's the real thief (and do we really care)?
Possibly my fave Purple tune.

I was born too late to enjoy many of the "classic" rock stars as they came out, and while I haven't yet delved into the Deep Purple catalog, I was very impressed by their RocknRoll HoF induction speeches and performance. Not that I really care about the RnR HoF typically, although I was happy to see SMB and NWA inducted that year; the highlight for me was Ice Cube's speech about how Rap, while not a traditional form of music, does have a lot of the same "question authority" mentality as regular Rock stars, and at least on that count, NWA did push the music industry in ways never done before.
I'm not sure what my point was here, maybe knowing I had a 7+ min track to be lazy while listening to got me off track. I've rated this sucker at a 9....and to all of you who were around in 1972 and blazing the Js and cracking the tabs on some brewskis and hauling ass in your hot rods....here's to you for making it to 2017! Long Live RP!!

8 track bolted underneath the dashboard, wires hanging down. Huge box speakers on back dashboard. No AC, Hot summers.

I hear you. I do remember having all 8 cylinders of the 318ci engine firing hot in my well used '68 Dart convertible with this tune blasting away. Driving over the speed limit was obligatory!

The good old days when there were a lot fewer cars on the road. I miss that car.
Average weed and crappy beers?
Crappy beers AND crappy weed, from what I recall. And then the Israelis had to invade and occupy southern Lebanon.... there went the supply of Lebanese hashish.... sigh.
Damn Israelis.

Yea I just realized it was a 10 vs. 8 or 9.
Any radio station playing anything from the Machine Head album needs to be taken serioously.
