You know what I wish?
It was just you and me
Sitting in this corner bar
You could tell me how you are
But I'm not going to lie
Or anything
You don't even have to speak
If you keep looking at me

And I could go all night
But they're turning up the lights
It would be so easy
To do or say anything
But I'm not going to lie
I'm not looking for love
I won't let you in my heart
But you are always on my mind

whole heartedly agree!  beautiful!

This song always makes me think of late nights I have had sitting at the bar with someone and a late night, that I would like to have, sitting at the bar with someone.
Only a few songs can get me in that relaxed dreamy state.  This is one of them. I can imagine some here feel the same.
Harmonica is very distinct. I wonder who this is in this song. Sounds familiar.
Excellent. This song grows!

Agreed and well said!  I always thought of it as a slow-burner but now I'm thinking "smoldering" is more fitting.
Sitting at a 9 for me - today it feels like a 10.
That bassline hits me.
Her voice -
Tears start to flow every time i hear this song.
This sounds like a fresh soft pillow for a weary head...an 8.
Forgive if I've already commented on this, but I just had to say I love this.  Kathleen is a Canadian treasure. It's a  wonderful tableau of a song, so evocative. I also love her slightly detached  but earnest singing style- few other vocalists are able to do that- recalls Suzanne Vega in the best way.
Wish Kathleen was a neighbor, I'd make cookies to hear this each day.

Perfectly said and worthing repeating here.

- I think this is a lie we often tell ourselves out of self-protection. I think we are looking for love, just like everybody else, as Morrissey says.

Morrissey isn't anyone I'd take relationship advice from, despite the great lyrics. This tune is quite good in a concise way - my feeling is we don't like to be lonely but there are people we wish we could talk ourselves into loving.

The echo/reverb on her voice and all instruments (except maybe her guitar at the beginning?) sets a lovely atmosphere for the lyrics ... and I can FEEL the angst in her voice.
Bill G, she put out a new record last year please play some.

This Kathleen's song is the best ever!
After hearing this  track on RP, I bought all her albums. Thank you, RP.

When music captures an emotion you can't describe...I think this song is that.
She's playing in Pittsburgh on 8/26 as a part of the free Summer Concert Series. Will be there! I seen her years ago as an opening act. I cannot remember for whom, my mind says Cowboy Junkies, but I know my memories are not great.
go see her live, a show you won't forget!

Wow! Listen:

She's mesmerising...

This is a terrific song.
So sweet so nice, so cool song and feeling!!
Looking at tour dates right now...just decided that I have to go see her live.  That's the kind of reaction that I love from great music...makes you feel something so powerful that you have no choice but to act.  Whether its protest or passion, it stirs you to move.
Ahhh, still sounding good 14 years later.

perfect music for/by broken people.
so sweet, so hypnotic, so melanconic, remember me my wife...goodbye my Love.
Draws me in every time I hear it, rather wonderful really.
Harmonica and vibe reminds me of some Talk Talk
What a lovely sound and a Canadian too!

Her new stuff is really good too.
This is such a wonderful, new type for a blues song.
I wish there was a way this could be more than a 10, damn fine song

This brief exchange encapsulates 2020 well. Hope mixed with uncertainty, the key factor being that the hope was based on so little information. Also, this song transfixes me every time I hear it. Sometimes on repeat.
I just love that harmonica in the back. Goose bumps!

Signature track sounds a little....    but you're right!!
So. Damn. Good.
In a strange way,  reminds me of that Mazzy Starr song.

Dreamy, fuzzy, liquid,  hazy, wavy.

Love the segue from Dylan's Things have changed, there's a nice G-minor connection going on
Just boosted it up to a 10
My rating for this is a ten, and every time it comes on, I check to *make sure* it's a ten. Such a cool, calming, melancholic sound.
Great track.  I love the harmonica.
Faint echoes of  "The Twin Peaks" atmosphere.
Shimmering  swirling  layers of beauty melody and harmonics.   Headfones  essential.  Yes Sir I like it

Like driving on a country road at night in the middle of July with the windows down and the smell of the cornfields on either side of the road.
such a cool vibe for a (not) love song.
Such an evocative take on heartbreak. Always stops me in my tracks.

Maybe this Wednesday, Kath?

The whole album is excellent.

There are other fine songs including Asking for Flowers

I keep hearing this out of the corner of my consciousness and think "ah, someone else did a cover of Creep."
Kathleen is back in the music fold after a sojourn in her cafe and I, for one,  am glad

There are a good number of extremely talented, gifted musicians and songwriters out there. Kathleen Edwards is one of them.

Yup. She quit the music industry a few years back and opened a little coffee shop. Figured (sadly true it turned out) that she'd make better money with less bullshit.

I've seen references to her at least playing the odd gig and going back into the studio but last I heard her coffee shop (Quitters, in Stittsville Ontario) is still her main focus. Or was... wonder if it'll survive this Covid-19 weirdness; everything here (couple hours west) is currently under lock down with no end in sight.

O_T_B is correct.  This is the best track off a "great CD".   I strongly agree.

The CD also makes for great road music.

EDIT:  Oil Man's War is a terrific anti-war song.  I love it and to put this into context:

1)  I have been listening to anti-war songs since a very early age.   Nazi occupation stories too.

2)  As an investor I specialize in overseas oil and gas exploration and production companies where  the social contract is absolutely critical to getting anything done.   Times have changed but I know the history has been rough.

Terrific set RP. This is why you’r the best radio station In the universe. Old times FM from the golden years, but with audio quality second to none.

I found a great live version of this from 2012, with a great guitar solo by Gord Tough (who really should be a hockey player with that name). Might be my favorite version!

This song flows so beautifully. Never get tired of playing it. So easy to get lost in this tune.

I hear Jim Curry/Blue Rodeo 5 Days in May in here....

For many reasons I need to head north of the 49th parallel.  These are just two.

Are you happy or complaining?
Have seen Kathleen a couple times, and she's unreal.  Such a sweet voice, such a talented songwriter.
Her web site says she is running a coffee shop in Ottawa named Quitters.....

I'm gassing up the car, heading out from Seattle today to see what the hell is up.....this talent is too valuable to be wasted on coffee grounds.....
Reminds me of Neil Young's Cortez the Killer.

Agreed. Saw her perform an extended versions of this, about 3rd song in of the concert.  The place spontaneously erupted into a long standing ovation after the song. You couldn't not, it was outstanding.

Well, I could once again be falling for false promises but if NAFTA II is proceeding and the steel and aluminum tariffs are off, then it is back to joyful bourbon excess.
