It's complicated
Technically I'm certified
A walking declaration
Of everything I couldn't get right
Time is just an anchor
But 7 years I think I'm right
Now you've changed your number
It's like a noose around my life

Every pill I took in vain
Every meal for you I made
Every penny I put away

Asking for flowers
Is like asking you to be nice
Don't tell me you're too tired
10 years I've been working nights

My life is like a picture left
out too long in the sun
Now I'm trying to remember all
the faces of the names I've loved
And all that's left of me now is
a cigarette burning bright
And a fading memory of all the things
I tried to get right

Every pill I took in vain
Every meal for you I made
Every penny I put away

Asking for flowers
Is like asking you to be nice
Don't tell me you're too tired
10 years I've been working nights

Every pill I took in vain
Every meal for you I made
Every bill I went and paid
Every card I signed my name
Every time I poured my heart out
Every threat you made to move out
Every cruel word you let just slip out
Every cruel word you let just slip out

I thought that was you.  In case you can't guess "knobhead" is implied.

Really - good - made me sit up and listen.  :-)

See her in concert. You'll likely change your tune.

I totally agree. I saw her this summer at the xpn festival in Camden, NJ. She was amazing. I stop everything I am doing every time this song comes on.

I bumped this song from 8 to 9.  It is just so good... Thank you, Canada, as always.  I love you. {#Hearteyes}

Well, this tree-hugging, native-loving cowboy LOVES country, especially this what I call 'electric country', or what is really prog rock-influenced country folk.
'sounds like an artist who's honestly searching. thank god there's still a few

I almost want to stop listening to RP and play nothing but Kathleen.
This song just takes me on a little trip.

And yes, I am kidding.

Wow.
This is just...really good, plain and simple.

"The lyrics ring so true - and there is no easy solution to this whole thing. Men and women (or men and men or women and women or...) sometimes just cannot seem to communicate honestly and objectively without hurting/getting hurt."

For this alone it get's a 9 from me.

true, too true
on the other hand...this song makes me profoundly sad...
This song makes me very grateful to be free of anyone's expectations. The road calls...

I've noticed a disproportionate number of talented artists coming out of Canada - what's the story?

Well, that's nice of you to say. Per capita, Canada always has produced a disproportionate number of great musicians, actors, comedians, etc. I'm not sure what the reason is but I think it has something to do with it being tougher to get "discovered" up here so people have to work even harder at their craft to "make it big". (Our apologies for Rush and Howie Mandel.)

people who I haven't seen in a while are often surprised to hear how 'serious' about photography i've gotten in recent years. certainly if someone had told me I'm spending a significant percentage of my time 'taking pictures' 5 years ago, I would have been highly skeptical. But, if asked to trace where my passion for photography was ignited, it would probably have been at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, where Kathleen Edwards was playing the (first?) MapleMusic Showcase. Long story short, I was shoved to the front with my dinky digicam, and for the first time managed to get some really good concert shot ;) It was all downhill from there :P

Flashforward to now, its the first time I've managed to catch Kathleen since then, and its interesting to see just how my style has ... evolved since then :P Better camera helps too ;) I like the drama of the shot - ironic since she's mainly known as a folk, alt-country performer ;)

Great pic!  Thanks.  I just rated this song for the first time. (9)   I can't say why I never rated it before.  This song reminds me so much of so many women I have known who have expressed their angst over how they have fared in relationships.  I suppose I should feel I suppose I should feel good that either they have opened up to me or that I HEARD them (or both), but it just makes me feel so sad that so many women are so resigned.  I CAN say why I didn't give it a 10 - it doesn't even give a hint that there's any way OUT of this way of living.

Indeed, last year me and my girlfriend hired a mini-campervan and travelled all the way through New Zealand, this CD came by very often... Excellent mood-setting music....

I didn't have that exact reaction, but mine was pretty similar... bought the whole damn CD and WORE IT OUT.  I should look in iTunes and see how many plays this CD got on my iPod.. whew!  Great road trip music.
Remember the first time I saw her live a few years ago at a mega concert in Toronto that was setup to get past the SARS crisis (I was working backstage). She was on the venue late in the afternoon—headliner was the Stones later that evening so that was the big "draw". She had been getting some radio play with her first album so not a complete unknown but imagine walking out on stage as a new performer in front of nearly a million people. Her adrenalin was so pumped and later backstage some local newscasters were interviewing her since she hit the "live at 5" time slot. She was so hyper from her time onstage that when asked how she felt she just blurted out the f-bomb several times. It was so genuine and funny to see an artist so pumped.

Wow, Cynaera really summed it up for me too . . . I love this artist. And this song just pulls at your soul . . . beautiful melody and great lyrics.  Bonus: she is a native Canadian like me.  I'm a big fan. Love the Hammond B3 in the background too, can't get enough of that sound . . . . Thanks RP for playing such excellent tunes.

I really enjoy Kathleen's music. Check out some of her videos on youTube. This one is fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkamonwD2yM

She is married to Canadian indie guitar veteran, song writer, Colin Cripps who has played with just about everyone on the Canadian music scene. If you watch the video linked above, he is the hockey referee and plays guitar in the team dressing room.

Wow. Heart-felt lyrics. No pretense at all.

The whole album is a delightful 2009 discovery even though it was released in 2008.

Good artist that we don't seem to hear about often enough in The States
