Take up the yoke and plow the fields around.
Gone are the days when the ladies said' "Please,
Gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me."
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
1920 when he stepped to the bar, drank to the dregs of the whiskey jar.
1930 when the wall caved in, he paved his way selling red-eyed gin.
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
Delilah Jones was the mother of twins,
Two times over and the rest were sins.
Raised eight boys, only I turned bad,
Didn't get the lickin's that the other ones had.
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.
Tumble down shack in Big Foot country.
Snowed so hard that the roof caved in.
Delilah Jones went to meet her God,
And the old man never was the same again.
Daddy made whiskey and he made it well.
Cost two dollars and it burned like hell.
I cut hick'ry just to fire the still,
Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill.
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.

I don't care for anything by the Grateful Dead, but this rendition is very good. Lyrics tell a good story, and the orchestration enhances the story's hillbilly setting.
Time for a tumbler of grenadine.
Anything?
Wonderful cover!

Wonderful cover!
Eye wateringly respectful to us Deadheads, and hopefully some newer folk too.
Captain and Tennille was dreadful.
Dreadful is too strong for a decent tune you don't like.
Now that hurts - Cap't n' Tennille was the sountrack of my girlfriend and I during Jr. high
I have learned to accept people who don't get into the dead... but I will never actually understand them.
Shhh. One of the secrets of Fatima....
Couldn't agree more heartily. First bluegrass rendition I've heard. Did Jerry or the Dead cover this bluegrass style?
Terrific ending!!
I had to look that up. I figured Jerry and David Grisman certainly would of played it as they played a lot of Bluegrass together. I was blessed to see them once in Austin at a small venue, late 80's I'm guessing, I am sure they played it. (Awesome Show!) But I found no recordings other than the GD.
regarding "not into the Dead" the straight ahead (early?) actual SONGS can be good. the incessant musical noodling and acid head boring ness is GODAWFUL.
Truer words have never been posted on RP!
Some really great covers of GD tunes: Los Lobos, Lyle Lovett, etc.
c.
Not in my books. Dreadful stuff.

We should remedy that... Bill, how bout it?

Keep up the great covers RP.
nope!
there is a reason that Jerry Garcia's fiddle playing & the grateful dead were such a popular band
dusty bottle + clean liquor!!!
Given that about 65% of the people on the planet have some shade of brown eyes, statistically, there is little choice.
Good to know there are some data scientist in the crowd!

The name grenadine originated from the French word grenade which means pomegranate, with pomme meaning apple and granate derived from the Italian word for seeds. Grenadine was originally prepared from pomegranate juice, sugar, and water.
This is why I like visiting this site!
Goooooo-leeeeeeee! This shur is a lame tune Barney
LOL! Totally agree

Likewise - very well done
Funny, we're having thunder and rain pouring down at the moment. Very apropos.
Great cover.
weird...same here right now
I love perceiving the space-time continuum
I don't understand this at all...
different strokes of course... but I don't get this at ALL!

Great cover.
Indeed.
AH-hhahahaha!! My grass was already blue!
Yeah Phil sucks.
C'mon man.
Sounds fine by me.
Lacks the Dead's energy and urgency tho. A tad slow.
"Energy", "urgency"?! Is the "Dead" you refer to The Grateful Dead?

Each to there own...I rather enjoy the pace of this. I like this a lot more than the dead version, tbh. And again, I never would have had the chance to say that if Bill hadn't put it on the playlist. Love RP.

Did he say the whiskey was "clean" or "green"?
Unless it was St Paddy's day, I would say he said "clean".

Agreed. This is my favorite Dead cover and I don't really care for the Dead all that much.
Same here. Liked this on first listen, and it growing on me too. This version just 'feels right' to me.

A solid 7 for a well-done rendition of a great song.

Sentimushal? What a great word! Not necessarily for this song, though - I LOVE this song. I want to subscribe to the Businessgypsy Lexicon. Here's my contribution: When you drop a dish of sauteed shrimp on the floor, you have a crustaceous mess.
Like the Dead or not, you have to acknowledge the poetic storytelling in Hunter's songs. One of America's greatest and vastly underrated poets.
Jerry was one of the great American folk song writers. This version is a little too country for me.

My thoughts exactly.

What a gift is the ability to take common experience and immortalize it in this fashion into music and verse.

Yup, nice finish, and start, and middle. Yup.
When I see it's Emory Joseph covering The Dead, I understand why I like it so much. This is really wonderful.
