Me
I'm a part of your circle of friends
And we
Notice you don't come around
And me
I think it all depends
On you
Touching ground with us, but

I quit
I give up
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
It seems, and
I quit
I give up
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
It seems, and

And being alone is the
Is the best way to be
When I'm by myself
It's the best way to be
When I'm all alone
It's the best way to be
When I'm by myself
Nobody else can say goodbye

Everything is temporary anyway
When the streets are wet
The colors slip into the sky
But I don't know why
That means you and I are
That means you and I

I quit
I give up
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
It seems, and
I quit
I give up
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
It seems, and

And being alone is the
Is the best way to be
When I'm by myself
It's the best way to be
When I'm all alone
It's the best way to be
When I'm by myself
Nobody else can say

Me
I'm a part of your circle of friends

I bought this album in the 80's when I was just a young thing, I played it over and over.
So great to hear a tune from it 43 years later!
Saw them on their first tour just after this album debuted.  They were young, had an innocence about them, and Edie was a little unsure of herself up on the stage. And they were great!  I think their second album was a let down in part because their original drummer left the band.

So nice to hear this song.  It really is timeless, because it lacks ANY of the affectations that are in so many 80s and 90s songs.  Guitar, bass, shuffly drums and a pure vocal.  Would fit like a glove in any decade from 60s to present day and not sound weird.

I think the best ingredient is that EMOTIVE vocal with those lyrics.
Stopped me on my way to take a shower, pulled out my lighter and held it in the air.
Yeah I'm old and should quit smoking ASAP
I'd only heard "What I Am" until now. I like this one.

Not at all. Hope you get over it, some day. Or at least, accept it as part of your life.
I have always very much loved this song.  Wonderful.

I think Tana has it right. Paul Simon stole her mojo.

This album (and video and lead singer) were kinda fresh when they got some airplay in the '80s. It's clear that boinking Paul Simon was most of the reason for their success, listening to it 20+ years later. Don't miss 'em.

For the record, was not Edie Brickell doing quite well BEFORE she met Paul Simon? Seems her career went downhill AFTER she married him and started having babies, even tho Simon did some producing for her.
Love this album and Ghost of a Dog.  Makes me wonder why it has taken until just now for me to look and see she has several albums I've not listened to.  Something to look forward to I hope.
Always liked this one.
This song makes me so happy, when I hear it I just want to send you some money!!

I already have this album somewhere on cd (not yet burnt to digital) I don't remember ever listening to it after the 1st play after I bought it. . . I should dig it out and give it a go on the basis of this.

Great band and great vocalist, lyricist. I miss them.
Ah, yes...Edie.  I give this song a 9.
Great song.  One of my favorites.  I love Edie!
I saw her in Deep Ellum before her career took off...the band was great back then.
Thanks for the memories....this was a great time for me as well as a great song. I knew these guys......
first two albums were excellent

They have kept their relationship as private as possible, from the beginning.

Sorry, never saw your reply till just now....

They were called New Bohemians as the 3-piece.

I graduated from NTSU in 1984 btw and went there on and off from 1977.  In 77 I was part of an original acoustic group called "Road".  We played for free (meaning didn't get paid) at some of the clubs around Hickory & Fry.  I lived in a house on Sycamore Street whre we'd rehearse or just play for free.  Good times.

The band I was in in Dallas in the mid-80's was called Like Normal People.

Hey, woozurbuddy!  I'd be very surprised if we don't know each other from the Denton or the Deep Ellum days.

Sentimental and beautiful memories hearing this song.  The whole album is legendary.

Agreed. And from their second album, too.

But I don't recall all the strings in the arrangement. But maybe it's been that long since I last heard it.....
I LOVE this song— haven't heard it in years! Reminds me of a great time in my youth. Thanks RP!

Thanks! Great song, very nice memories.
love Edie and her voice

have her first solo album as well

I love this because it takes me back so far. I saw Edie Brickell in concert at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh when I was in 7th grade. It's a rare artist with whom you can trust your 13 year old. I guess today I would have gone to a Hannah Montana concert? Nah...

Memories........Crossing the channel from England to France and talking to this young Brit that had just gotten out of jail and was on his way to join the Foreign Legion.
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - Circle
Jimi Hendrix - The Wind Cries Mary
Van Morrison - Into The Mystic

Sigh...what a perfect set for a quiet gray day.    And I've always loved this song. So happy to hear it here.
Ah, the memories.......{#Sunny}

You should hear what the rest of the band went onto do musically after they split up!

Palin's post-VP debate theme song?
ending reminds me of the end of "her majesty"

Love this song and the whole album. I remember seeing Edie & New Bohemians at Mcalister Auditorium at Tulane University in '89 as they were touring for this album. Great show.
wow. this brings back lots of memories
I give up. This song isn't good enough for me.

Hey, who were ya? What was the name of the 3 piece? We used to be so thrilled to see the New Bo's play the tiny Library Club in Denton. Edie was always at least an hour late, but well worth the wait. Good times, dancing like sardines in a little sweaty room. Hey Bill, will you change the band name to New Bohemians on this one? It's not just Edie.
I see Bill added New Bohemians, but I remember an interview with her way WAY back in the day (I bought this CD) and she seemed annoyed that people called her band "The New Bohemians." She emphasized that it's "Edie Brickell & New Bohemians." No "The." So there.

yes, yes! good memories- saw her in Rhode Island, a great show!!

i remember this song. hanging around deep ellum in the 90s. she ought not to have left the bohemians behind, she ought not have!

I played in a club band in Dallas in the 80's that did the same circuit as New Bohemians, a 3-piece art rock band. You probably know the legend (true) story of how Edie joined the band - they took off and were off our little circuit. Outstanding band I used to see at Club Clearview in Deep Ellam.

kind of bittersweet..since they just lost their keyboardist to a shooting.
edie is a sweety and I miss her . . . . i wanna make out with her . . .
Edie and Paul are still married. The new CD 'Stranger Things" is awesome. It picks up right where the New Bo's 2nd CD (Ghost of a Dog) left off. Lots of good guitar jams. krg123 wrote:
I think they are still married, actually. Stranger Things is a New Bohemians album - they're a talented bunch, and there are some really great songs on it.

I hate to see people do good work and not get credit. With that in mind, this song is by Edie Brickell AND New Bohemians. They were a band. She later went solo, true, but at this time she was not as the title implies. The main reason I point it out is because they released two great, great albums that I cherished and it was probably 75% due to the awesome musicianship of the players. Those guys could freaking play, every instrument. Even in this cut, the acoustic guitar is just excellent. Otherwise, beautiful song and perfect RP material...
I had this on cassette tape a long time ago and wore it out. I really must get it on CD again. Thanks for the reminder RP.
Quite beautiful. The first Edie song I ever heard and I've been a fan ever since. A 9 for me.

WOW. This song SOOO helped me through my father's death. I have a fondness for it.
Her new stuff with her band is pretty good

Reminicent of the old days...knew the band, traveled a bit with them too! Nice to hear this on RP

So glad to hear Edie on RP. I hope to hear her more often. Thanks Bill
This takes me way back. Has Paul been keeping Edie's voice locked up?
I love this old Edie Brickell -- when she was with the New Bohemians. Especially love Ghost of Dog. What happened to her? Does it have anything to do with influences from Paul Simon (who I admire greatly)?
Like this!
Ahh.. great memories of angsty college years. Hee!
Sweet.
