A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."
I close my eyes, Then I drift away
Into the magic night. I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do.
Then I fall asleep to dream My dreams of you.
In dreams I walk with you. In dreams I talk to you.
In dreams you're mine. All of the time we're together
In dreams, In dreams.
But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone.
I can't help it, I can't help it, if I cry.
I remember that you said goodbye.
It's too bad that all these things, Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams In beautiful dreams.
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."
I close my eyes, Then I drift away

Actually makes me think of Dean Stockwell, who lip-synced to this song, equally as creepy as Hopper in that movie.
I Agree! Very creepy!!

Does anyone else think of Dennis Hopper when they hear this? : )
Either way, dang, the Orb is tremendous. Just a class act from start to finish. A true rock 'n' roll dignitary.

I recall that Roy Orbison was old when he died. And now I see I'm 5 years older than that. Time is like that.

Almost impossible for me to hear this without images of David Lynch films!
Excellent. This song always makes me think about David Lynch's film Blue Velvet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0PbwLTLKA4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP2OwiCmk88
Sublime.
Best. Voice. Ever.
wow what an incredibly beautiful song..
Brilliant song, brilliant use of it in Blue Velvet. It embodies the film perfectly.
What a voice!

Whoa, I came running into the room to register a "Barfo-Sucko", thinking it was some "wannabe" Roy Orbison, but without his voice...
Now, I feel bad because I generally like his music, although I haven't very much of it... I will upgrade my rating to a 5 only because I have a lot of respect for him and I know that he has had a huge impact on the music scene. But, I still don't care for this song...
Side note - I did have the pleasure of meeting his widow at a wedding, somewhere in the Oakland/Berkeley hills with an incredible view, late '80's, before the fire. It was somewhere after his death and before my breakup with my partner at the time, which would make it somewhere between Dec. 88 - (mid 1990)? She was wearing black and had very long jet-black hair. BTW, she is an incredibly beautiful woman.

Doesn't get any better than this.
Lovely song to dance with someone you care or hope to care a lot about... Lots of spinning...
When melody was still important in making music.
Be still, my heart.
Beautiful.
Beautiful.
Blue Velvet still scares me.
one word to describe Roy Orbison: genius
most of the the music by other artists that follows him is due to his brilliance.
he is the Beethoven of our times.
oh, and speaking of Blue Velvet, Dennis Hopper was a local celebrity, and the movie was filmed in various parts of my town. i pass the building used for the exterior shots of his apartment all the time, and it always brings both a smile to my face and a shiver up my spine. we miss Mr. Hopper here dearly.

I knew this song very well before I saw that film, so it hasn't really affected my experience of this tune, but I could see how that could happen. This song has some of the strangest opening lyrics if taken out of context with the rest of the tune.
"A candy-colored clown they call the sandman / Tiptoes to my room every night"
There aren't a lot of songs like this, but some songs are just intractably tied to certain movie scenes—such as Bolero and Bo Derek in "Ten" and this song.
Once you've seen BLUE VELVET, you will never ever forget this song. But then you'll also be stuck with sick images, too. I don't know if the movie ruined the song, but it definitely changed the images that pop into one's head when you hear it.

Blue Velvet didn't ruin this song for me. I like both the movie and song and can separate them.

Austin City Limits reran a 1982 performance of his last weekend. Soooooooooo good!
This music is still awesome, even if it predates my birth by a number of years!!
Truly an otherworldly voice...
"He was an incredibly gifted songwriter and musician - and with that voice - musically, he had it all. To me, this song, more than any other, is just exquisitely painful. I don't know how he managed to sing it without breaking down. He was a strong man to have suffered such loss, and still able to write and perform." gmaureen
The Voice !
Several songs seeing new airplay/webplay today. Proof that we're not fossils ... yet!
Roy ain't my favorite, but I can see the uniqueness of his voice and the crossover blues/rock from back in the nascent ages. With an album named "The Big O," one could easily see that he was decades ahead of his time.

RIP Dennis Hopper. "Frank" from Blue Velvet was one of your best characters...
"Let's hit the f***in' road!"

Frank's favourite song!
En Vivo En 1982 con su voz aun intacta el gran Roy Orbison, cantando uno de sus mejores exitos, muchos recordaran esta canción por la pelicula "Blue Velvet". Que la disfruten.
"Roy was a natural baritone, but since 1961 writers have speculated that he had a three or four-octave range...that's is an amazing range for anyone. Most singer would be lucky to get 2-3. "
"this song still brings tears to my eyes; many moons ago the Big O helped me through a rough 'n difficult time with his music. I might say he saved my life. Sounds pathetic and it is but it's also true "
"I was one of the lucky one to be present at that concert. If I remember right this concert was given at 5th August 1982 in Austin City. And I can assure you it was a great concert especially the act of Crying was great. With this song Roy did something what he didn't do so much nl to repeat a piece of the song and at the end of the show the audience's applaus was so loud that the Big O returned for repeating Running Scared the closing song of the concert! One of the best I ever saw "
Does anyone else think of Dennis Hopper when they hear this? : )
