When you first began it
You got what you want
Now you can hardly stand it, though
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
Till you wise up
You're sure there's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think one drink
Will shrink you till you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
Till you wise up
Prepare a list for what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
Till you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
Till you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just give up
Ever been there? Yeah, me too. We're such a funny species ain't we? 😏
Typically excellent arrangement and production from the Mann team. Cleverly poignant lyrics. Great word play. Who can't relate to this? It's like having your teeth kicked out with a sponge hammer.
Well said. I was passively listening, then the chord sequence went somewhere unexpected and beautiful, and it had me.
The song will always remind me of this sketch from a UK satirical and very dark comedy Jam:

Sponge Hammer is the name of my chillout metal band.
That's what I demand from my music. "Good word play."

ping, ping, PING? (sponge hammer) ;-)
"You got what you want

Oh boy can I identify with THAT line. I suspect anyone who lives long enough will agree, too. And having gotten what I wanted a few times along the way all I can say is these days I enjoy simplicity. I take each day for what it gives me in open and honest appreciation. I'm not asking for anything more. Which......of course....leads to how long before I can't stand it? Heh!

I never thought a song like this could be overplayed, especially years after its release, but it's like an everyday thing at this point.
It might seem that way, but the site's info differs. According to what it says today, "Plays in last 30 days: 4." Just look up to the top of the page.
hahaha - very dry joke, I assume!

Me too. But not in a good way
Because it is a piece of crap?
I agree with this comment completely!!

and me. and everyone else.
I very much doubt Aimee lied to me!
No it didn't. It was written specifically for Magnolia. Just like when she wrote Christmastime for PTA's Hard Eight.

So true!!
Bill catches a little heat in the perception that he might like Aimee Mann too much. Phooey, I say.
This song is arresting. I stop and just listen when I hear it anywhere. Bravo, RP.
Saw the movie in a near empty theatre during the day. Playing hooky I think. Shocking in so many ways. I think I went through every emotion with that one. So powerful and heavy, one can only watch it every once in a while.

It may sound cheesy but I think her voice is very organic.

Good thing someone else is in charge ! thank goodnesss
If that's true, it's pretty pathetic. Phil Collins has had his pop song moments, but none of them rated a glance at an Oscar.
otherwise quite like the song and would like to disassociate the two.

I swear, my wife said that exact thing to me the other day.
I'm glad I'm not alone!

What you say remind me of what BILLY BOB THORNTON said in SLING BLADE (< 10!!!!)
"Coffee makes me nervous, when I drink it!"
Haaaa - statement of the year!
you had me at "hush hush keep it down now..."
What I do know is that the director chose Amy to write all the music for the soundtrack.
Screenplay
By the time he started writing the script he was listening to Aimee Mann's music.<4> Anderson used her two solo albums and some demo tracks from a new album that Mann was working on as a basis and inspiration for the film.<8> In particular, Mann's song "Deathly", on her album Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo, features the lyric "Now that I've met you/Would you object to/Never seeing each other again", which was used by Claudia as line of dialogue in the film.<4> In addition, "Deathly" also inspired the character of Claudia.<8>
It was a pretty good movie especially Tom Cruise's performance, but man is it depressing!
Magnolia is definitely in my top 100 all-time films, maybe even in the top 25 of those. . .
Beautiful song by Aimee!
Um, yes, it's a beautiful song. A note to all you out there, however: don't listen to this album on heavy rotation when you're really depressed and lonely at college, dealing with unrequited love (not to mention a total and complete A-hole—I have never met anyone so cruel and doubt I ever will again) because you don't have enough self-esteem to realize the hell you're putting yourself through.
Law of attraction: dark and miserable attracts dark and miserable..... Love this song though. Thank god that's over! Here's to WISING UP Thanks Bill.
