The ghosts we kept within
Can break free from inside
And untie our blindfold eyes
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts
So when the ghosts find you
Be careful but be graceful
For all will be revealed
When ghosts become set free
A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts
A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts
Build bridges and not roads
Make love make hate make war
A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts
A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts

Super song. Thanks a lot R.P. (Florin from Transsylvania).
Buna Dimineata! (Good morning)
surprising how similar to the albumcover this picture is!!!!
There was he. The Captain. 8 years ago. Long before captains even existed.
I thought Icehouse was a beer ... ?
Yes, indeed.

Would it not be handy to have a quick reference chart, seeing that we have so many citations of pretentiousness here in the comments section. Please arrange the following in order of pretentiousness. If you will do this work, I promise to post the chart every time I see an offense registered. We can call it the MrsTom Pretentiousness Gradient, MTPG for short. Not to be confused with Empty Peter Gabriel, of course, THAT'S a whole other chapter, let's just handle these one at a time and in order. (Was that too Pretentious?). ah... wait... we were talking about something...... THE LIST ! ! ! I I'll have it made like a mountain range, with a snow-white pillow for my big fat head, And my heaven will be a big heaven, And I will walk through the front door. Big time. (I love me!) Pretentious:
How exactly do you create pretentious music? In particular: how is this song pretentious?
Honestly wondering...
I don't find this song to be pretentious so I cannot address your second question, but your Definition 2 is a description that can easily be applied to music or any creative endeavor. Granted, that is a newer application of the word, but the Oxford English Dictionary defines "pretentious" as:
Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed:
i.e., "a pretentious literary device"

Pretentious:

I can recall no examples in these posts in which the claim that something or someone was pretentious meets the criteria you cite. I think that the intended meaning is along the lines of, "I don't like this but cannot explain why." Which is fine by itself, but is unsatisfactory. Thus, the need to dress mere opinion in the trappings of serious analysis.
I find this particular song quite unpretentious, if you know what I mean.

yes. ireland came to mind here, as well. I like this song. usually I don't listen to the manic street preachers. last time I listened to them they were still hoping the guitarist would return. that was about ca. '98
Seriously — I don't normally like these guys but I like this song a lot.
Really? Wow, those wilds of Toronto must really be out in the sticks. The Manics are famous within and outwith the UK. Get with the program, dude :o)
I've got a lot of respect for them, not just because of their excellent music, but because of their politics and background. The Manics just go to show that it's not just horny-handed sons of mining toil and brass bands that come out of the Welsh valleys.
What a dick I am!
I must have been in a reeeeeeeeally bad mood that day!
I shall NEVER understand the mind of a goat, much less rappel one (but I love that picture, and I fear for those goats.) Same with repelling ghosts. I fear for the ghosts. I love the MSP, and this song.
You do read the strangest things on this board. Complaining about repetitive lyrics in rock music?
A woman came up to me and said
"I'd like to poison your mind
With wrong ideas that appeal to you
Though I am not unkind."
She looked at me, I looked at something
Written across her scalp
And this is what it faintly said
As I tried to call for help:
There's only one thing
That I know how to do well
And I've often been told
that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that's be you
Be what you're like
Be like yourself
And so I'm having a wonderful time
But I'd rather be whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
There's only one that that I like
And that is whistling in the dark.
A man came up to me and said
"I'd like to change your mind
By hitting with a rock," he said,
"Though I am not unkind."
We laughed at his little joke
and then I merrily walked away
And banged my head on the wall of the jail
Where the two of us live today.
There's only one thing
That I know how to do well

Even though it's in regular rotation on my MP3 player, I'm still groovin' on it after first hearing it here some six years ago. It's also a GREAT song to use as a fear-nothing motivator while skiing.

Lots of excellent Manics to play!
"A soul in pain has no image to reclaim" - repeated 4 times
"To repel ghosts" - repeated 12 times
Repetition for effect is wearisome, especially when the imagery doesn't work.
Though a big PG fan, I got the same problem with "Red Rain."
"Say something once, why say it again?" Now there's a lyric.

The complaints about repetition in music (an essential component of music — by definition) is what is "wearisome".

Me neither. It's one of those songs that flips my switch.
Curiously its the vocals that turn me off of this song. Not sure if it's the lyrics, some accent in the voice, or what.
Before I read your post I was thinking the same thing.

How about banishing it yourself with a daily dose of the Petagram ritual (LBRP)?
Building it on a close area and then just expanding it through the house should repell pretty much anything not belonging.
No... No devils included, it's archetypical angels all the way. ;)

Getting Rid of a Ghost
You have a ghost in the house. And for whatever reason you and your family want it gone. There are many different ways that you can go about getting an unwanted spectre out of your house and out of your life. The first thing you should do is to look at all your options as a family and decide as a unit which ones you are most comfortable with. You should also take a close look at the type of ghost you have. Is it truly evil and harmful or is it merely annoying and frightening at times? Are you and your family in any kind of danger?
Some people want to try to tackle the spirit alone and try to communicate their wishes to it. Other people due to religious beliefs and convictions may want to try other routes.
Some of the methods available are as follows:
Sweeping - In this method you get a natural broom and start in the corner of your house that is furthest from the door. You are literally going to sweep the ghost out. Every inch of your house including all areas with carpets. As you sweep you are going to keep telling the ghost that you want it to leave and that it may not return. Sweep right out the door so that end up outside. Once you have finished sweeping light a candle in each room of the house. Be sure to clean and dry the broom before you bring it back into the house or better yet, burn it.
Blessing- Many people have found that it is often enough to simply to get a member of their local religious belief to come and bless the home.
Bells-Or, you can ring a bell in every corner, and in every room
