I could make you scared, if you want me to
I'm not prepared, but if I have to
He said, I can make you scared, it's kind of what I do
If you're prepared, here's what I propose to do

You're in Russia and a more than a million works of art
Are whisked out to the woods
When the Nazis find the whole place dark
They'll think god's left the museum for good

I can make you scared, if that's what I do
If you're prepared, and if I have to
If I make you scared, and you pay me to
That's the deal, now here's what I can do for you

Now there's a focus group that can prove
This is all nothing but cold calculation

Tests have shown that suspicious are hostile
Their lives need not be shortened
Truth be told, they can live a long, long while
Tickled to death by their importance

If you can make me scared, if that's what you do
If I'm unclear, can I get out of this thing with me and you
If you feel scared, and a bit confused
I got to say, this sounds a little beyond anything I'm used to

Now there's a precious few that can prove at the root
This is all nothing but cold calculation

Clearly entranced, you're heading back now
Defanged destroyer limps into the bay
Down at the beach it's attracting quite a crowd
As kids wade through the blood out to it to play

Okay, you made me scared, you did what you set out to do
I'm not prepared, you really had me going there for a minute or two
He said, you made me scared too, I wasn't sure I was getting through
I got to go, it's been a pleasure doing business with you

Another Tragically Boring song. My god this band is crap. (Apparently I'm not a real Canadian because I can't stand this band)
But respectfully, RIP Mr. Downie.
Nice tune but I'm not sure what the lyrics are about.
Macho political/military posturing as a metaphor for power struggles in personal relationships?
Anybody?
Thank God music lasts forever even if the lead singer/songwriters don't...peace Gord..long live the Hip
Bill,

Every time you decide to play Coldplay please play some Tragically Hip instead.  You can't go wrong.
"I can make you scared, it's kind of what I do
If you're prepared, here's what I propose to do"

Love this line.
Bill, you are a good man for playing so much Hip. Almost makes up for the Coldplay I must endure...
More Hip!
Yeah, love the guitar playing in this one.
Great acoustic tune that really highlights Gord Downie's smooth voice.

amen to that!

such versatility with this band. Saw them last year at the National Arts Centre. It was a night of screaming guitar and Gord has just wild screaming and well just being Gord. They opened the second set with two acoustic numbers, one Courage, which they usually do in full flight. More Hip please.
thanks for playing this !
good tune!

Love it when RP plays the Hip. Nice to know that not just Canadians know about them. {#Music}
Nice!

Not enough Tragically Hip played.

Gotta love the Hip. Definitely one of their best songs, particularly out of their more recent (ie 10 years) work. Memories of high school....:)

I'll drink to that

Thank Eris for The Hip.

...irresistable melody and in your face, thoughtful and provocative lyrics....and still it gives me to goosebumps and chills down my spine...the not many songs do that...
Great tune from one of their best albums.
There is a lot of Hip that I like. It's hard to pick a favorite song or album, but I'll suggest "Ahead by a century" as another beautiful song with a similar tone. Week-end mornings I like to gently wake-up my girl friend with music and a cup of coffee. "Ahead by a century" is always a good wakey-upy song.
This was the first Tragically Hip album I bought. It is a very interesting album. I have bought many of their albums since that time. They are very cool, melodic, deep, deep lyrics.

The Hip peaked in the mid-ninties with "Fully Completely" which is the CD to buy if you only want one. Day for Night was a pretty decent follow-up, but the quality of their music has never been up to those standards since. Think The Stones after Sticky Fingers: still good, but never the same.
you just wouldn't have this AMAZING song nor the heartstopping Nautical Disaster, so get both (at least) there's a precious few, that can prove, at the root, this is all nothing but cold calculation it's been a pleasure doing business with you LOVE IT
Nice more obscure mellow tune from this intense poetic unique rock and roll band. Amazing live shows with the enigmatic, poet/lead singer, Gordon Downie throwing in nuggets of improv and spastic ramblings. Suggestion for new fans: Up to Here (1989), Road Apples (1991), Fully Completely (1992) and Day for Night (1994) are a great starter. If you want to sample some Live Hip, I suggest Live Between Us from 1997. They also have an excellent greatest hits double CD which came out in 2005 called Yer Favourites. It includes 95% of their classic hits with many of their latest hits as well which is cool. Most fans agree that their masterpiece albums were in the early 90's but their recent offerings always had a minimum of 1-2 excellent tunes on each CD. Maybe not worth getting the album, but the nuggets certainly qualify as 'greatest hits' material.
On a two month repeat. 9:44 am - The Tragically Hip - Scared 9:40 am - Turin Brakes - Slack 9:35 am - The Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettes 9:31 am - Calexico - Deep Down canadianbug wrote:

Hey, Canadian RPs: Didn't you love it on "Corner Gas" when "Brent" kicks them out of his garage while they are rehearsing so that ThunderFace can re-unite! ("And leave the amps!!")

The Hip are both the most overrated and underrated group in the history of Canada; the perennial "They Should Be Huuuuge in the States!" band. Which is to say that they remain huge amongst the cheep-beer-drinking loogan crowd who are, generally, incapable of grasping the depths of their best work - this song included. They're a damned solid band most of the time and very worthy of RP - it's lovely to hear them here. Now someone should upload their new tune, "In View" which, oddly, reminds me of River-era Bruce Springsteen....

C'mon people. Get those ratings up there. Being as critical as can be, this song is at least an 8.5

Amazingly, this song is only an "8" on the scale of awesome songs by The Tragically Hip. Seriously.
Absolutely outstanding string of tunes here, Bill: 5:59 pm - The Tragically Hip - Scared 5:56 pm - Turin Brakes - Slack 5:51 pm - The Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettes 5:47 pm - Calexico - Deep Down A most excellent selection from The Hip's extensive catalog. Wish we heard more on RP, but, hell, I own 'em all anyway.
Never heard this band's music before, but I really like the expressive guitar and interesting lyrics. I'd wager that on a per capita basis Canada produces the finest music on the planet. The list of fine Canadian musical artists is quite impressive.
Outstanding. I have watched the Radio Paradise audience slowly come to accept the genius of The Hip. Glad to see so many converts.

Jeez, everyone loves this, but I gotta decline... Cheer up dood, to much cryin in your beer...
Just got my tickets to see The Hip at Artpark in Lewiston, NY. I can't wait. Haven't seem them in over a year and I'm in dire need of a good (drunk) Hip Show.
What a great song this is, it really stirs up great memories.... Thanks, RP is the best!
This song touched me so deeply right now. I feel this way, he says it just the way that i want to say it. I love this song for that. It was on ten minutes ago...I'm listening to it now for the third time in a row. Thanks Bill!

This song always reminds me of walking home from a pub on a crisp winter night, the sound of snow compressing beneath my feet, thinking of the night. The Tragically Hip are the quintessential Canadian band. Their early work takes much form Canadian history (Tom Thompson, Milgaard, race riots in TO) moreso than their later work but a common thread throughout the years has been a very acurate reprsentation of CDN life which can still be appreciated by folks from other places of the world. If you get the chance, espically at a small venue like they would play in the US, check them out.
What you have written here is a strong sense-memory and is poetically written. Nice.
I have great memories associated with this album. Love it.

Gotta agree.
I like the Hip, and love the early work that they did (Road Apples especially) is a magical album They dont seem as relevant to me anymore but I would have loved to see them land commercial success in the US for all their hard work trudging through tours in Canada for years. Alas, they aren't pretty, and in the music industry (especially now) strait teeth in your mouth are more important than the words that come out of it. Love the hip though
this is really, really, really nice.

i'm not a hip fan myself (easy now, i've already been kicked out of canada.), but i like this one. this guy's great when he just chills out & slows down. not a fan of their other stuff, though. i'll definitely give this one at least a 7.

Second that!!
This is damn good, love the guitar playing. They have an ass-kicker live cd.
This is excellent stuff. Love that slight dissonance in the riff, gives it a kind of oriental nuance in the background, timeless..

Thank you! Encore!!! Just something about their sound...
I love this guitar playing. Also the way the song very slowly builds to a crescendo.
I love the Hip - this is a beautiful song - play them (and it) anytime!

One of the best albums from this band.Great song.I hope they can make music like this again not saying some songs latley arent good but, they just arent the same.
One of those rare songs that seems to make time stand still. Great group, great song with great lyrics. Great cd too.

From when they were still a great band. After "Trouble at the Henhouse" all inspiration seems to have vanished.
An 8. Beautiful tune.
Oh! This one caught me by surprise. Good addition to the playlist! Since moving to the US, I'm always happy to hear some Hip -- and this is possibly my favourite album of theirs.
Excellent choice of tunes from the Hip, Bill!

Me too. They are amazing live. They can rock or slow it down. Either way, they are amazing.

I hope everyone enjoyed this song, for it is one of my favourites from the Tragically Hip. Many folks in the United States might not know this band too well, but in Canada, they are an institution. They can sell out the largest arenas anywhere in Canada (as well as American cities close to the Canadian border). They haven't broken into the US market completely yet, but hopefully will. If anyone is looking for an album to start with, Day For Night is excellent (this song is off the album). And, if anyone ever hears of this band coming to your city to play live, GO SEE THEM. You will NOT be disappointed.
They're great live. One of the good things about being from Buffalo is that you get to hear all of the good Canadian bands that get overlooked every where else in the US. Road Apples is one of their earlier albums and is also a good listen. Beauty.
