Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene
He talks about you in his sleep
And there's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, Jolene
But I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me, Jolene
I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him even though you can
Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man

What ever became of Mindy Smith?
Is that Dolly Parton doing the backing vocals on the refrain?

JOLENE JOLENE
' Please don't take him just because you can.' If this was 'her' instead of 'him' the song and any singer of it would be labeled a male chauvanist, as the lyrics would indicate an inability to decide for oneself.
Can anybody tell me what is the female version of Male Chauvanist please? And is there a smiley to go with it?
Nice voice, but
This is a powerful song...
This is one of the few songs on RP that I must either turn the volume down, or go smoke a cigarette. I think I'll do both.
look out here comes that mean 'ol Jolene again. Hide your man!
I like Emmy lou's version a lot better
I really like this song, maybe my ovaries need tending to. Hang on ive got balls!

I'll take good old White Stripes any day, but their cover pretty much sucks. This version sucks too. Actually, Dolly's original sucks too.
Words cannot express how much I hate this song.

Your man bailed a long time ago because you keep whining!
If you get a chance to see her live, don't pass it up. I love the end of this when Dolly kicks in with her! Fantastic!!
If Dolly likes her enough to sing back-up on this track, it's good enough for me. I don't really like this tune that much, but think she does a nice job with it.

Well, what are you waiting for? Go listen to Dolly and I think you'll change your admiration.
I prefer this version to the original, which is great - btw. But, mate, you should hear the version by Susanna & The Magical Orchestra!
Funny, I thought the last tune (Rain and Snow) sounded a little like Dolly Parton's trilly voice... and now this
Is there a method to this madness?? (Love Dolly BTW)
Regardless of all the oher comments, I think that this is an incredibly sad song.
Sappy, yes, but it makes me feel very bad for the protagonist

If we can have Johnny Cash why can't we have Dolly? This is a prime example of an OK cover getting the airplay over a far superior original just because it's a good example from this artist. Kind of like what happens with Stevie Ray Vaughan's Hendrix covers... his best stuff is his covers so if he gets any air it's at the expense of Hendrix. Go figure. That said I guess Cash's covers are so wildly unlike the originals they don't compete...
Whole lotta truth here . . .
And I like the song. Don't mind the repetitiveness in the lyrics whatsoever. Dolly Parton's voice is likely better, though. But she sports a Southern accent, and RPers might think that inherently renders a piece "country."
Geez! so many harsh comments. The gal's just trying to take a great Dolly Parton song and do it justice.
Okay, so her voice doesn't convey raw fear and desperation you crave in a song about someone tryna STEAL yore man, huh? But if you wear your fear out in the open, maybe he'll be more likely to bolt, is maybe what she's thinkin. She's soft sellin it.
If you gotta have that heart on the sleeve stuff, check out Jack White's live version here:
https://mp3.insound.com/download.cfm?mp3id=2355
More raw anxiety, fear, and desperation in his voice than you can shake a stick at. No wonder Loretta Lynn had fun making a record with him.
I'll upload this nice version since a few others seem to like it, too.

I agree-- there's a raw desperation to the singing and the instrumentation is darker as well. Love Dolly, but honestly like version best.

I don't know what my problem is (I guess - in view of all the negative reviews posted below) but I really loved this fresh retake on a relatively old song. I don't like any of the other versions of this song much due to hearing them played far to often (elsewhere than RP), but I absolutely love Mindy's version.

The White Stripes did this on Conan O'Brian's show in 2003 when they appeared 5 nights in a row. I don't know if I'd call it "funny." I thought they were very reverent and Jack's singing was extremely emotive. Also on the Blackpool Lights DVD.

her original versions are ALWAYS superior.
ex, i will always love you. completely ruined by whitney hustons overwrought "star search" warbling.
Don't ned to hear this on RP... had enough of Dolly's version back there on the bowling alley/bar jukebox back there in '73 or so.
I like this song, but it seems to be overplayed.
Mindy has original songs which are sooooo much better.
This is the only one I've ever heard get "air" play here. She has some really sweet lyrics & music. Any of the following would be my preference over Jolene. I really do like her stuff.
Come To Jesus
Falling
Raggedy Ann
Fighting For It All
Train Song
It's Amazing
Angel Doves
Hurricane
Hard To Know
One Moment More
I've noticed Bill playing this song before. First time I've clicked on it. I see he has Dolly's version on the playlist, too. Be interesting to compare. I give this rendition a "7". Always like hearing it.

WISH I could have heard the White Stripes do it. This version is very good in the emotion dept and also the vocal quality and tunefulness, though Mindy's voice is not as big as Dolly's. I wonder why Mindy wanted to cover it . . . ? :?: :?:
I wouldn't loose any sleep if I never heard it again.....too repetitious in those lyrics........no enthusiasm in the vocals...

It's actually on Just Because I'm a Woman: The Songs of Dolly Parton. Some releases of her album have it, though I haven't seen one yet.
Excellent tune, as I've said before.
How rare it is to find a song that is not only amazing in original form (ala Ms. Parton) but has spawned two equally breathtaking covers (in Mindy's album, and various sets of the White Stripes, as previously mentioned) Each artist brings something new to the song, but also maintains the beauty that it was born in. Kudos to all.

Not sure what's with the detractors...Dolly clearly endorses this, and I think it's damn powerful. More than likeable.

Why not play the original? This is just a pedestrian cover by a singer who can't hit the high notes.
On second thought, you can have him, Jolene.

Dolly once commented in an interview that Jolene does, in fact, exist. And apparently Dolly's hubby had eyes for her; hence, the song.

Precisely. Or who would even want him if she were not the object of his desire anymore? Man, she needs to read "He's Just Not That Into You."
When I heard this vocal I immediately thought of a young Joni Mitchell. Not being a jazz fan, I delight in thinking of her career having gone down a country road.
