I have never understood the appeal of Krall. The biggest compliment I can pay her is that her voice is pleasant. There is no soul, no guts. This is cruise liner lounge jazz.
This fellow Canadian girl has the smoothest fry around.

I have been to several of her concerts plus a DVD at Hollywood bowl. Always fantastic, she's in my lifetime top 3.

I like her. But I don't like her too much. I think she's overrated. IMHO. Not a lot of there there. Like most of her tracks, it's a solid - 6. On some days, even a fabulous middle of the road 5. That is, I may listen to the tracks on RP, but I don't leap to download her tunes.

Doesn't touch Holly Cole's version, which IMHO is amazing.
Good version of this song. An her enunciation enables me to understand all the lyrics, for which Waits has me guessing on a few words.

Diana Krall is an incredible talent. Simply amazing both as a pianist and a vocalist. IMHO this isn't the best selection to judge her by if this is your first exposure to her music. As a previous post suggested her music seems to be moving towards targeting commercial results now instead of the pure joy seeing where it takes you. A pity.

I like this version well enough and she is definitely better eye candy than Tom Waits but no one can wrench this tune out this like ol' Tom...

Great song. Holly Cole nails this one cold. Diana lays back too much to be involving for me. Still worth listening to but the vocal lacks excitement. Just doesn't sound very tempted.

I think she was raised on old jazz standards, her father's records.
This one is tough, it's ok but the original by Tom Waits is amazing! I wouldn't say this cover does it much justice.

I think Diana Krall is an amazing artist with a beautiful voice. One of my favorite contemporary jazz artists- hands down.
it's not bad per se, but it doesn't pass my bar for covers. It just doesn't add anything to the original. "Whooooa-whoooa-whoooa" just isn't any kinda substitute for Waits' desperate "laddaHEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHH", and it suffers without the punch of the horns.
