I disagree, this one is a lot better I think. I'm sorry for Cohen but Lloyd's voice fits this song much better.
I usually like cover versions (even Concrete Blonde's "Everybody Knows") and especially some of the Johnny Cash covers from the American Songbook series. But when I heard this, my reaction was "what's the point?" Covers should do something different, add a new perspective to the song. In this one the singer (initials L.C.) tries as hard as he can to sound just like Leonard Cohen. Why bother? I'll go for the classic original every time.

ack, not again! i can only hear this song once every 10-15 years (regardless of singer), and this is twice in the same week!

This cover is ok but I much prefer Jennifer Warnes.
Couldn't agree more. This takes haunting lyrics and melody and makes them bland.

Was just thinking the same!

I was going to ask if this was a cover, it sounded familiar. Man, these comments are invaluable. ;) I'll have to say this is one of the best features of RP.

You're right of course. Leonard's the man.
I bought his greatest hits album (I've others now as well).
This Greatest hits album has a sticker on it saying "Lenny's hits"
I left it on, somehow it just totally undermines the gravity of the whole thing.

This is not the best cover I've ever heard. Tori Amos may have that, but this is one of those songs where Leonard is best. I'm glad this was played.
Totally agree with you about Tori's amazing cover of this song. For me, it ties with Leonard's version. Just a great song.
Please, Please...Something from Easy Pieces or Rattlsnakes. Great music from the mid 80's. "Down on mission street" would be perfect for RP!
I think you may have that backwards?

Hmmmm - could be - I always thought it was about drugs...but it turns out you are correct: :nodhead:

Some of the articles about you over the years have indicated that you've dabbled or more than dabbled in various kinds of spiritual paths. Is the line, "Did you ever go clear?" from Famous Blue Raincoat a Scientology reference?
Cohen
It was a Scientology reference. I looked into a lot of things. Scientology was one of them. It did not last very long. But it is very interesting, as I continue my studies in these matters, to see how really good Scientology was from the point of view of their data, their information, their actual knowledge, their wisdom writings, so to speak. It wasn't bad at all. It is scorned, and I don't know what the organization is like today, but it seems to have all the political residue of any large and growing organization. Yes, I did look into that and other things. from the Communist Party to the Republican Party, from Scientology to delusions of myself as the High Priest rebuilding the Temple.
I think I hear the inspiration for a Leo Sayer tune.
Wow, I would have never recognized Lloyd's voice here. I second the suggestion on uplaoding some of his earlier works, particularly 'Rattlesnakes'. A great cover IMO...

I totally agree. I'm going to upload some stuff off of Rattlesnakes, Easy Pieces and Mainstream again. Maybe they'll put it on the Review Channel this time. :)
I've certainly uploaded a lot of Lloyd Cole. Other than this track, it seems stuck in permanent review status.

A lovely take on a great Leonard Cohen song by a thoroughly underrated artist. Speaking of which, how about some Lloyd Cole originals, either with the Commotions or solo? It's great stuff, and he sounds a bit less like Bryan Ferry on his own material.
