The strap that holds the cart in rein
Has been let loose by wearing thin
By wearing thin, by biting through
The shift in power leans to you

And the cart is on a wheel

I've wept with joy for the things I've done
And I've wept as hard for what I left undone
For what I left undone
For what I couldn't deem mine
For what I thought was yours
And so I drew the line

And the cart is on a wheel
And the wheel is on a hill

I heard someone fall
I saw another one flail
I saw an arm dig deep
Where there was no rail
Well there is no rail
And there's no "because"
Though the body be strong
The Spirit is law

And the cart is on a wheel
And the wheel is on a hill
And the hill is shifting sand
And inside these laws we stand.

If we are lives and souls to keep
If we are Love, I hope we do not sleep
I hope we do not sleep
I hope we stay our ground
Hold fast to the Mother as she turns us 'round.

'Cause the cart is on a wheel
And the wheel is on a hill
And the hill is shifting sand
And inside these laws we stand.

Hold fast to the Mother...hold fast.

Ferron has been around a while.  I'll give this a 10+.  You should listen to the whole album in context.  Written and released about the time of the first Gulf War.  We really thought we'd had it...I was overseas at the time, and the whole thing was tremendously scarey.
Ferron has written some great stuff — MORE FERRON, BILL.  Thank you.
Ha!--nice followup to Knopfler belting out 'When it Comes to You'---they sound so similar
Intresting sound, never heard of these guys. I like!

sounds like some cruel genetic crossbreed of Laurie Anderson and Kate Bush.
Could be Geddy Lee's twin sister!!!

Shades of Laurie Anderson! Listen to "My Compensation," "Dark Angel" or "Broken" from the "Life on a String" CD Well, okay. Most anything from that CD. eerie.
Ferron is a SHE?!? My bad... Sounds like Al Stewart...
This song is from Ferron's 1990 album, _Phantom Center_ which has a lot of good stuff on it. Perhaps most notable, though, given the time frame, is the presence of a then unknown singer performing BV's -- Tori Amos.
Reminds me of Stevie Nicks.

This song was okay.
Ferron is one of the great singer/songwriters of the past 30 years, too bad she never got the acceptance she deserved. BTW, a double album retrospective came out in 2000 called \"Impressionistic\". It has tracks from all her albums. Her old catalog is out of print, so this CD is the only place you can get most of those tunes.
I have NEVER heard Ferron played anywhere but here on RP. She is a Canadian artist that was so well respected she was given a grant to pursue her career. Her voice is kinda weird, but it grows on you. She is a little bit too \"heavy\" for me at times, but this song is pretty damn great.
