34 years now, and I still can’t believe it either. And, sadly, RIP Karl. Excellent album.

 

We could certainly use more World Party / Karl Wallinger on Radio Paradise!

Seeing as how we have quite the choice, perspective depending, when it comes to Vaders these days, I could see that being possible and beneficial.

I agree with jbunniii.  I too can't believe that this album was from 26 years ago.  It has stood the test of time in my collection.  Love Karl and World Party.
I saw them a couple of years ago and they were fantastic.  Karl, the guitarist from The Blockheads, and a bass player.  He does most of the music on his albums himself, like Winwood or McCartney do sometimes.

He is touring again to small venues. Saw him last year and it was fantastic. Voice is perfect as ever.
Is this a Moody Blues cover band?
One of my first CDs ever (after a reluctant conversion from vinyl). Excellent all the way through. Despite having "Party" in the name, I believe Carl Wallinger did the whorl thing himself.
"Goodbye Jumbo" is a good album!
What a perfectly horrible and boring song.  I feel like a kid forced to listen a Latin Mass.  Ugh.

Hard to believe this album is almost 20 years old.  Still as great as the day I first heard it!

Did you actually listen to the lyrics or just jump to an ill-informed conclusion based on the song title? This is hardly a song promoting religious indoctrination, or as you so eloquently put it "indroctonisation" (huh?).  If anything it's just the opposite. Wallinger is just voicing the musings of an average shlub looking at this messed-up world and searching for something to believe in. (IMO)

I bought a great World Party album on vinyl way back in '90 called Private Revolution, haven't listened to it in years, really good to hear them again.

Great song from one of my favorite CDs by one of my favorite artists!

Has anyone heard Peter Gabriel's Big Blue Ball? I have been tempted to pick it up just because of Karl's involvement on the CD.

Thanks Bill...everytime you play "Is it Like Today" I think how nice it would be to hear World Party. One of the best surprise concerts I went to in '92!

World Party steals overtly and blatantly riffs, melodies, lyrics and ideas from all over the classic rock and soul spectrum from the Beatles to the Stones to Prince, to Jellyfish ripping off Queen. One of the reasons I looove World Party.

Saw World Party (among a few others) last Saturday night in Columbus. It rained almost all night but WP sounded great! Nothing like dancing in the rain!
Man, I haven't played the 'Jumbo' album in years. What a great 'knock-upside-the-head.' The whole album's great and was sorely overlooked back in the early 90s. I remember getting a carousel CD player around 91 and this disk stayed in the tray for months. Thanks for reminding me, RP. -- and the Beatles influence has always been there, and though I can hear how some can hear a tinge of Queen influence, I always heard shades of early Stones. I hear in Wallinger's singing style more Jagger influence than Lennon.

Well hell. I just listened to this whole album twice and I still don't hear the "Queen" resemblance. Guess it's just a matter of perspective. But if you're pining for something that reminds you of Merucury, I'll give you the same advice I gave folks earlier... Get Spilt Milk by Jellyfish. Their album Bellybutton is pretty decent too, but the former is a much better album IMO.
A good, not great song, and not the best song on the album, but Goodbye Jumbo is on my all-time top-ten list.

I TOO hear Queen in this.. that's not a bad thing.. for it immediately brought images, sounds, and thoughts of Queen and how I miss Mr. Mercury and the talents that could have been brought forward to this millennium. Its much like missing John Lennon only different in that the musical styles were different.. both equally diverse but still.. a shame either way someone looks upon the two. I'd definitely like to hear more...
