And food and love was all but left to hunger
'Cause when I stray from my truth as I grow older
Too much leaves an empty hollow hunger
I think about you on a moonlit night
And the stars all seem to weep
When there's so much to lose
There's never any time for sleep
Look at me doing all these things without you
We always laughed, and you were untrue
Where was it we tried hard not to go to?
I think that's how I finally came through
All the things we took for granted
The words still live on in my head
All the times I took for granted
All the words I never said
I think about you in the moonlit night
And the stars all seem to weep
When there's so much love to give
There's never any time for sleep, yeah.
So I stayed true to the things I knew when I was younger
And human life was all but left to hunger
'Cause when I stray from the truth as I grow older
Too much leaves an empty hollow hunger
Too much leaves an empty hollow hunger
With or without you
With or without you
With or without you.
I’m going to give the credit for this comment, to havardlee, you brilliantly put it in words on another song thread, and it perfectly suits some of the comments here on Beth’s song as well.
“Music is a horrible application of social media. It only makes sense when the goal is to be positive and discuss the song from the perspective of a fan. I never want to hear, not ever, why somebody thinks a song is bad. Even to venture forth such a comment is to show that you completely misunderstand how music works. It is to show you are narrow minded and can't understand why anybody would have different taste than you. Arguing about a merit of a song is about as stupid as arguing why vanilla is better than chocolate. With all due respect, before letting us know your nasty Yelp review on a song, consider just drinking a big cup of shut the fuck up first. Thanks.”
or you can just not be a snowflake and take everything personally.
BTW Beth O lost both of her parents before she reached the age of twenty. The next time you hear this, take that into consideration.

On a more ridiculous note, I always thought "We always left a new world untrue" was "We always laughed when you were untrue," or, alternatively, "We always laughed at you were untrue" - where the you separates the line into two interconnected sentences: "we always laughed at you/you were untrue." I think mine makes more sense....
My ear has a problem with her intonation.
into-ho-nation...

...speaking of Ryan Adams Bill? haha!
Oh, please!!! It was a FUNNY comment. Why politicize it?
Because women have had to put up with that kind of sexist bullshit for far too long. It's not good enough for a woman to have talent in any given field, she also has to look flawless while doing so, or her efforts are given no merit. It's bullshit and it's time for it to end. Bravo to bruzote for calling it out.
It has a Dido appeal. But with an important touch of Beth.
Never heard of her before RP. Another reason why I love this place.
Funny. However, would you say something like that about a male performer? And would I think it is funny? Things that make you go "hmmm". (Hope I never hear that tune on here.)

I''d an audition with hope, but my baby needs me.
I packed my things called a random book from phonebook..
T'was the central reservation in never never land.
...looking a little rough around the gills..
It's Ben Watt playing the keyboards on this track, so there is definitely a electronica/"house" sound there.

She can't hold a candle to Chrissy Hynde.
Movie? This is music not Hollywood BS.

What a waste.
Are you insane?
I was going to rate it an 8, but will raise it to a 9 after reading your multiple posts.

So that's a vote of 4 from the Dutch Eurovision team.
Lolcano. : )

*If you don't know what I mean, Beth would sing this phrase: "nearhearly everhery worhord shehee sings"
Absolutely, same here. I used to love listening to her music but the double-syllable thing now makes listening to her almost unbearable. It's a shame.
Rally then chaps, rally! Spend your hard earned on raising your soul.
OK. I saw her, probably in 2008 or 9, playing a decent sized venue of at least 2,000 in Brighton. She was late, very late. When she eventually appeared she apologised, but she had been in London at an 'award show' and 'traffic' was bad. I am sorry, but that was out of order. She should have been at the gig where people had paid good money to see her and not going off to something else making her late.
The gig itself was so bad we walked out half way (a VERY rare event for me).
So that is two strikes for Beth Live then. . .
Having said that, Beth is still on high rotation at Poacher mansions and I still love listening to her.
She gets a lot of play at the oldsaxon hall, too, but I remember seeing her once in Canada. At that gig she had a small band with her in a nice intimate venue. I could not hear her singing, I could not hear her guitar, I could only hear the massive bass booming over everything, and I mean everything. That bass could have drowned out a jet engine in the same room! At the time I blamed the sound guy, but maybe it's just that Beth sucks at live performance. I believe I left early.
And carrying on. I watched her live performance on the recent live iTunes gigs at the Roundhouse. Got through the first three or four tracks and gave up again.
Such a shame, I really, really want to enjoy her playing live.

Agreed. I came to RP to escape that dull, monotonous cassio dance beat that infests internet radio.

Snazzy!Never saw the film or had any intention of doing so, but this is a great tune.

I sincerely doubt it was stage fright or lack of preparation. She's been in the biz much to long for such amateurism.
Beth Orton suffers from Crohn's disease and was probably having a bad day. Maybe she should have cancelled, but ya know "the show must go on" and "keep a stiff upper lip" and all that rot....

My feelings exactly. I find her very frustrating - I like a lot of her songs but trip on her singing style every time.
It certainly does, I believe her voice to go very nicely over electronic music. I hope she does more.
Exactly. Personally, I like the folk/electronica thing going on. This is a cool tune - nice groove.

I think you've nailed it — I love Beth Orton, but this track is not doing it for me. After reading your post I tried blocking out the music and focused on her voice, and there is potential for a great song, if the arrangement / music was different.
I sincerely doubt it was stage fright or lack of preparation. She's been in the biz much to long for such amateurism.

Then she began the show. By the end of the 3rd song, she started screwing up — she could not remember how her music went! She fumbled and fumbled for minutes on end before figuring it out amidst profuse apologies. Then she made it through the next song, only to get hung up on the next 3 songs, fumbling and apologizing like before.
After the show mercifully ended, the clock had elapsed 35 minutes; another 10 minutes of audience persuasion got her to come out for 1 more song that truly ended the show. Total time from Beth Orton's entrance to her final departure: 58 minutes! She appeared to suffer not from inebriation, but from stage fright or lack of preparation. I expected much more for my $45 ticket.
Nice curse :). Perhaps we should bring back some archaic insults/curses for use on this board. Something like "May her camel be afflicted by the hoof-rot of Azrael", or "Thou whoreson of a syphilitic strumpet", or "He who bothers the bovines of the field in unnatural and noisome ways". It would make a nice change from "it/you/s/he sucks".
Well said! Beth does have a cool, distinctive voice. Now that's just plain ugly.
Perhaps not surprising from someone who chooses to identify himself in such a manner.
I will...thanks for the heads up!!
Never heard a goose wail....I've heard a dove cry though.
I think her (mono)tone on this song is more goose-like than dove-like. In general I like Beth's work, but this cut drones on and on far too much for me.
