We sit in the car outside your house
I can feel the heat coming around
I go to put my arm around you and you
You give me a look like I'm way out of bounds
Well, you let out one of your bored sighs
But lately when I look into your eyes
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
We get dressed up and we go
Out, baby, for the night
We come home early, burning, burning
Burning in some firefight
I'm sick and tired of you setting me up, yeah
Setting me up just to knock-a-knock-a-knock-a me down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I pull you close now, baby
But when we kiss I can feel a doubt
I remember back when we started
My kisses used to turn you inside out
I used to drive you to work in the morning
Friday night I'd drive you all around
You used to love to drive me wild
But lately girl, you get your kicks from just driving me down
Down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down
I'm goin' down, down, down, down

Hey! I think this song might be about cunninglingus?
Looking at other people's ratings, I feel like RP plays this song just for me. Thank you, William. I'll be a die-hard Bruce fan til I die.
Sorry but an average rating of 6.5 is way too low for this.
It's ok as a studio version, but when he plays this live, it's great!
For those haters who've never seen him live, too bad.
He's pretty damn good!

Can you imagine being so gifted that writing and performing *this* album was a guaranteed thing? Like they literally said "let's do a chartbuster rock album now" and just did it, ho-hum.
This tune is just one of many great pieces on a vastly underrated album. Even as a Boss hardcore, I'll admit he's got 5 or 6 albums better than BITUSA, but track for track, for me, it stands the test of time very, very well. To decide to make one pop-oriented album in a career is not to sell out. In the case of someone who started with songs like "Mary Queen of Arkansas" and "Wild Billy's Circus," it represented a real creative stretch, and a wonderful one at that.

OK, but, not his best song!
One the best concerts I've ever been to I think 1985 Frankfurt Germany. Except maybe the Prince concert of the same year.

No, it's even worse than that: it's a Jersey thing. Their judgement has always been suspect; look at their governor...
Jersey? Ha! Look at what our choices were for U.S. Pres. (none were good) and what we finally got. Not great judgement there either I'd say.
In 2020, the Repubs will run an Elmer Fudd/Yosemite Sam ticket and the Dems will run Daffy Duck/Spongebob.
And millions will vote for them.

We all know where he's going. Please make it stop. Now.

this album was such a huge fall off from his ABSOLUTELY great albums "darkness" and "born to run". nowhere near the depth of artistry......
"i'm going down down down down down down down down down down down down down down down down down down down"? these are great lyrics?

One of the most over rated "artists" IMO. Same ole same ole,,,unimaginative..."sick and tired" is right.
For those who feel compelled to make fun of this song, it's just one cut from a great album from "The Boss". I had the privilege to see him perform songs from this album when it came out in the Tacoma Dome, and it was a packed house. You had to be there to get the full enjoyment—it was the 80s!
There's Great Bruce, Good Bruce and Bruce for the Spruce pile
this is Good Bruce

Cool.
Haven't heard this in a long time!

Not a huge Bruce fan, but I dig this lil ditty!
If you're going to subject me to Bruce Springsteen, at least make it something that's not his version of pop music.
take me down to funky town,,,,way downnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, see a theme?....
Sound's like he's definitely on the "down" side of the big down/up debate (https://www.theonion.com/content/node/29205).
Not that he's ever been particularly funky.

I've heard this criticism of Bruce before — that you really need to be from the East or mid_Atlantic areas to truly appreciate his lyrics, etc. Never really understood it, but there must be something to it. Me, I have lived in those regions, and I understand his songs. What really gets to me, however, is criticism that makes it sound like Bruce is just a commercial, ripoff artist. It's fair to not like his music, but to imply that he is just trying to make a buck is so off the mark. Frankly, he's one of the more sincere artists we have in America.
Hmm, what? you have to be from the East to feel unworthy, trod-upon, victimized? Nah, not a locale sort of thing...and while some of us may or may have felt unworthy, at the time I don't think we were really listening to the words, we were too busy dancing and so was Springsteen. While he may have believed his personal power was usurped by The Man and others, whatever power and hope he did feel was channelled into his music. At least then. And all of us Southern Californians, despite the lyrics, definitely "got" what the music was expressing. Springsteen 1985, at the LA Coliseum, was seriously one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Despite however much more musically sophisticated I may consider myself to have become, I certainly can't deny the life affirming nature of music in from the '80s.... Music was just really FUN then!!! yeehaa!!

The day I bought this LP I also bought Prince's Purple Rain. I still have them both!
Which way did he go, George, which way did he go?
The 80's were so much more fun for music!!!
He was great at the Superbowl, he's still The Boss!
Sounds like a hit song for a high school dance.

Ok I may be wrong about this and please someone correct me if I am. Didn't Bruce say he didn't like his more popular (commercial) stuff. Which makes me wonder about his sincerity, if it's true. Also I grew up in the mid Atlantic states, and I was never a fan.

going down down down down - like your rating. you can do better Bruce.

Yeah, that music from north of the Mason Dixon, I tell ya....
I fell madly in love at a Springstein concert just about the time this album was at its peak, so don't ask me to be objective about this one...
gimme a break
Something darkly subversive in the lyrics of Bruce's uptempo gem.
There's good Bruce and bad Bruce. This is one song I could go the rest of my life without and never miss it. He writes such good lyrics. Why didn't he bother on this song?
*ROTFL* *LOL* First John Hiatt's "Drive South", and now "I'm going down". Bill, you naughty, naughty, naughty boy!!!!
I like this song. It reminds me of going down.
not a bruce fan normally, but there are a few I enjoy - this is one \:D/
volume is going down, down, down down on this one...sorry
Interesting theme here. We just had, "Drive South" and now "I'm Going Down"
I'm not quite sure what he's singing about, but it seems to have something to do with going down...
Bruce Springsteen must be a yankee thing. Cause it still bores me to tears.
Great song! I'm more of a fan of earlier Bruce, but this entire album is fantastic as well... just... in a different way.
