Let's go get stoned
When your baby won't let you in
Got a few pennies, a bottle of gin
Just call your buddy on the telephone
Let's go get stoned
Let's go get stoned
Let's go get stoned
When you work so hard all the day long
And everything you do seems to go wrong
Just drop by my place on your way home
Let's go get stoned
It ain't no harm
You're takin just a taste
But don't blow your cool
and start messing up the place
It ain't no harm you're faking just a nip
But make sure you don't fall down bust your lip
Let's go get stoned
Let's go get stoned
Funny time to have the "drug" set of songs (Rolling Stones - Sister Morphine, now this) - my partner at work just got up to go to a "drug free workplace" seminar; he'll be back at 2pm. And I was thinking he said "I'll be back at 2, gotta go do some drugs."
song has an even 7 rating currently; I'll try to bump it up some by rating an 8.
Drugs and insanity set: a great way to start the week!

BTW Hayduke, the reference was good, especially since Bill was following the Rolling Stones (read "The greatest Drunk on Earth and Andre the giant)" down about 3 paragraphs, for background. Even Bill isn't prescient enough to have figured out THAT segue! Is he?

Thanks after all these years.
I never did figure out who that was on the cover.
Hmmm, I always thought it was Joe!

It is, yes. Ray had a big influence on Joe and it's just more obvious on this track than most I guess. It being Ray's song helps I'm sure. Joe did this number at Woodstock by the way.
"Ray Charles was the guy I learned my vocal style from, you know, to the point of absolute adulation," — Joe Cocker
Edit: It is not in fact, I was surprised to learn, a Ray Charles song, though his version was a bigger hit:
'"Let's Go Get Stoned" is a song originally recorded by The Coasters in May 1965. It was written by Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, and Josephine Armstead.'

RIP Joe...
Singer Joe Cocker has died at the age of 70, the Yorkshire Post reports. The Sheffield-born singer died at his home in Colorado, where he had been quietly battling lung cancer for years. In the U.S., Cocker was most famous for his cover of the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends," as well as the shambling dance steps that inspired a Saturday Night Liveparody from John Belushi.
Great Voice, Strong Spirit!
