The only bad thing about this song is that it is only 7 minutes long
My friend, there is a 14 minute version
I seen David 3 nights at the Hollywood Bowl recently and when he performed this song it was one of the most BEAUTIFUL things I have ever heard. That solo deserves a 10 in my book.
I had to make do with one show in London and then went to see the Rome concert at an IMAX -the day it was released - he really is the MASTER - this has to be his very best solo album - to date!
The band members of Pink Floyd have undoubtedly contributed tremendously
to modern rock culture over the last century. To conclude from this,
that all modern releases are godlike, reminds me of uncritical "fanboy" behavior.
The following occurs to me:
Would these positive reviews of this song have been as numerous if an unknown singer had delivered this quality?
Probably not. Gilmour's voice sounds tired and hoarse.

People respond to those they know. There is also the issue of familiarity and emotional connections to everything (potentially) that resonates over decades. I get your point but in a sense it’s obvious why David Gilmore elicits a rabidly positive response! He does play an exceedingly distinctive guitar
Thank you David Gilmour!

My favorite guitarist, and one of my favorite voices, but I've never been able to connect with any of his solo work. I even find his Pink Floyd work without Roger pretty meh. There was something very special, albeit intangible, when David & Roger worked together.
That's funny, I seem to be attracted to more of his work without Waters. Even though I still do adore them together, the absence of that tension reveals a more centered/peaceful version of David's guitar work.
I was thinking the piano was intended to sound "Scattered". Maybe a homage to Bowie's Aladdin Sane with the avant-garde jazz, solo piano from Mike Garson?
Reading this comment and the one in the box - I thought the opening was very 'Rick Wright' with echoes of Echoes!! Infact there are a number of tracks on this album that, to me, have sounds of Rick Wright - not only the 'barn' version of Luck and Strange! Yet another 10 for Mr Gilmour
Maybe it'll grow on me...
but the composition of this song comes off really cheesy
I received my CD of this album the other day and have listened to it a few times. On the one hand, it's nicely made, with some good playing (not least his daughter Romany) and there are echoes (sorry!) of Pink Floyd here and there. But it's not a Pink Floyd record - it's a David Gilmour record. My personal take on it is that Polly Sampson isn't a particularly inspiring lyricist - at least her words don't move me in the way that David's have on previous records.
On this song, I find the piano break a bit clunky (I'm a pianist and I know whereof I speak) but on the whole it's a good cut.
And then there's his guitar ....

Beautiful guitarsolo! So happy with this new work from the master....
Yeah!! I need to catch it again though and listen to it all (I was asleep when it played some half an hour ago and I woke up when it almost ended, thinking "this must be a new David Gilmour song!"). From the little that I managed to hear I felt it sounded like "The Division Bell", finally a solo Gilmour piece that I like.

Maybe there's just a lot of David Gilmour in Pink Floyd records?

Nick Mason's drumming would have made it even better.
I love piano (I play piano too), somehow the piano flourishes feel unnecessary. More guitar!
And boy, was he mighty good to look at..
