Sell the kids for food
Weather changes moods
Spring is here again
Reproductive glands

He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means to love someone

We can have some more
Nature is a whore
Bruises on the fruit
Tender age in bloom

[Chorus x3]

Love someone, no

This borders on being what they call "country music" today. It's over produced, pop crap, while trying to sound "badass" to reach a defined market segment of Middle America, in which the market research group in a  high rise Nashville office wrote the song and dictated  to the sound engineer on how the song will sound.

But aw shucks. I wear cowboy boots and speak with  alot of "yawlls"...so they makes me authentic. Genuine. Real country.  And I always wear a cowboy hat.  Outside. Inside. At the dinner table. On the toilet. At church. At funerals.

What would Kurt say about this..
Sturgill is an American Treasure.
I love this take. It's less angsty than the original, but the melancholy replaces that nicely. IMO.
I kept hearing who I thought was Roland Orzabal from Tears for Fears, but it was this guy, which is a compliment coming from me. :)
His Wiki says "Simpson claimed that Elektra "[did not] know what the fuck to do" with him, as he created Sound & Fury to be difficult to market, and left Elektra with a "giant un-recouped debt" upwards of a million dollars from costs relating to the album's companion film, which was similarly hard to promote".

Nicely played sir, and I really like the cartoon.

Personally, I'm appreciative for it.

Good quote.

Interesting interpretation.  Grunge Country?

Yes but sounds like a big brass section for Country.
Wow, that was unexpectedly wonderful - go Sturgill
I growed up near where Sturgil is from and let me tell you they ain't much there besides beautiful lanscape.  Not a fan of C&W myself but glad to see artist come out of this neck of the woods.

Covers are an important part of the musical universe.  (Think about that next time you hear Beethoven, Hayden, or Mozart.)

This one sounds like a typical C&W tune blasting from a pickup truck's radio outside Jesup, Georgia.  Respect to Mr Simpson, but I don't care much for C&W.
Wow, rarely does a song make me sit atop the fence like this one.  I love it and hate it simultaneously.  And I hate that I love it.  And I love that I hate it.   Oh god.
What is this bullshittery?

No.....

Maybe there is an alternate universe where this is the original and Nirvana covered it.

I wish I was more open minded and didn’t hate this cover, but it’s probably unreasonable to expect to get every wish I wish.

I don't hate this cover, but I don't like it that much either. It's better on 2nd listen. 4 to 5. It could grow on me.
This is hilarious...
2 times in 2 days... it is too much billy
well crap - I really like this version - it tracks
Kurt CoJones. (no pun initially intended, honestly, but had to leave it once written)
Wish I could hear Nirvana cover Sex Bomb :-)
Kinda greasy
I'm not sure if the fact that I like this, despite myself, is a testament to the song or the singer.
“The album was intended as a story to be listened to in a single sitting. The cover definitely fits in context of the entire work .” Posted 2 months ago by trmurf I suppose the best albums can aim to do the same… and I concur. This rendition is as dark and twisted as the original, maybe even more… very poignant given the years between the early 1990’s and the current state of things in this American life. Kudos Sturgill Simpson!
Awful!
The  album  was intended as a story  to be listened to in a single sitting.  The cover definitely fits  in context of the entire work .
I'm going to need a palette cleanse after this.... flipping to my Nirvana playlist now.
I love this album, but I skip over this song every time. I just don't like the cover.  This is Nervana's song.

Could not agree with you more!
An interesting take. I like it.

😆😆 yes! I was going to skip and then thought
let's see how this plays out😅
For me this falls in the category: unnecessary covers.
Uh ?
Surprising...
Interesting voice
And nice album cover
Definitely caught my ear! Interesting. 😊
Meh. Very meh.
Okay, so I'm in two minds about this. It's obviously, objectively worse than Nirvana's version, and is completely unnecessary.

The nice part is at least Simpson put enough of a different spin on it to make it original and interesting. This is no Tori Amos Teen Spirit nonsense, which is about the best thing I can say about it. "Acceptable."
Wow, surprising interpretation and nice arrangement.

I think maybe that's a pedal steel making the casio noises(?) Funny similarity though. :-)

Agree with all the comments. This one stopped me in my tracks. Hardly teen angst, I wonder what Kurt would think?

I like it.

Gah, that wrong chord on "...what it means" is really jarring.
I'll be the heretic that says he enjoys this more than the original.  Kudos to whomever came up with the arrangement.
I don't know what to think about this one (which is what I love about some songs on RP!) I don't dislike the country (?) interpretation, but I can't get past the Casio synth sounds added in
no
I hate that I like this. I feel like I am betraying my generation.
Just goes to show the quality of the songwriting that it sounds this good with such a different interpretation. Kurt was such a talent.

Same here, it ran in the background and I wasn't paying attention. During the refrain my brain suddenly started nudging me "listen up, you've heard this before".

Its hard for me to believe that this is the first time this has been played on RP.  It is definitely worthy of the station and a standout cover of a much beloved Nirvana staple.   Kurt and the boys would be pleased...  and I wanted it go go on for a few minutes more
simple and different. starting with a 7...

Love this interpretation of Nirvana.
Somehow I don't hate this, but I feel like I should.
Always open to hearing different interpretations of songs

Guess I'm the first to comment.   It is an interesting cover.  I give it a thumbs up, reserving a number for a few subsequent listens.
