I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
You're trying to make your mark in society
Using all the tricks that you used on me.
You're reading all those high fashion magazines
The clothes you're wearin' girl are causing public scenes.
I said
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone,
Not your stepping stone.
When I first met you girl you didn't have no shoes
Now you're walking 'round like you're front page news.
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But you won't find my name in your book of Who's Who.

Go Mikey!!
I'll add an Amen - there are a number of tunes I'd be happy with.

Amen to that. I'd choose 'She' for my Monkees song request. There are times I imagine how fun a RP listeners party would be. I know I'd meet some very cool/interesting individuals, and I know the music would be fantastic. I'm curious as to how many of us loyal listeners would show up. Rock on coloradojohn wrote:
Amen! But for me, the other song by them I remember being really moved by was "Last Train to Clarksville..."

After playing a cover of another artist's recording, Bill will, at times, spin a tune by the covered artist. So, when this song ended I was hoping to hear Daydream Believer or, perhaps, Pleasant Valley Sunday. Oh well, maybe next time. Can I get an "Amen" from Coloradojohn!

Hi, so I did a quick search and it turns out that the Paul Revere & the Raiders recorded this first. Apparently they had less impact than the Monkeys. The Monkey's weren't bad considering they were one of the first contrived "boy bands". They might be dismissed as "teeny boppers" but they did have talent and some smarts. But....Tom Petty, what fun for him to come out and play this song. He's such a ROCKER!!! God, I wish I had seen him in concert, can only imagine how amazing it was for the audience! He is dearly missed.
If someone as smart and wise as Tom Petty would cover The Monkees, it says something (positive) about The Monkees' recorded output.

zesty ! cover rip tom
The Monkees version of "Take a Giant Step" is also fantastic.
We really need to hear The Monkees version of this.
I'm not a Tom Petty fan...but well done!

I sure do love how they jam good n solid on this old rocker n dig how the guitar at the beginning channels Zappa's "Trouble Every Day."

Pretty good, but no covers, RP!

Sid didn't sing this and wasn't a singer for the Sex Pistols, he just played bass and fucked things up. Sid did some covers solo - My Way and Something Else. Johnny did the singing for the Pistols though I think you might find a song or two sung by Steve Jones.
Yeah, my bad. I knew that. Thanks for calling me out on that gaffe.
Sid did sing My Way in "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle", which, though humorous, was a pretty pathethic performance.

I like it and had the original album but that was made by The Wrecking Crew. who did much of 60s music. Monkees didn't last long it was just a commercial gig

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about those cereal box records until you mentioned this. How cool was that?
Classic song from early on...I remember cutting the Monkees' vinyl disk from the cardboard of a Raisin Bran box at Grandma's house, putting it on, and having a wild time bopping around to it. Then it was all over the radio, and on the player in my 4th grade classroom.

but it's so much fun! Especially since it really hasn't been played anywhere, by anyone, for 50 years!

Meh. Brings absolutely nothing to make it stand out from the original - much like Eddie Vedder's cover of Indio's "Hard Sun".

Tom almost comes close to channeling the unfettered bitterness that Micky Dolenz evoked in the original. I must've been 6-7 years old when I first heard that Monkees song, and can still feel the energy I felt when this played on our old hi-fi (original Garrard turntable), as well as my subsequent surprise when I later understood the lyrics.
Yeah baby
Angry sentiments but sure is fun

I've never heard a version of this I don't love -
Paul Revere & the Raiders, The Monkees (god I love the Monkees) and this...

No one can make this song sound good for me. It just triggers. I didn't like it then with the Monkeys and bless Tom Petty; even when he takes it on, it still stinks as a song in my mind.

Definitely prefer The Monkees' version.

Bill,
You're taking me back to the late 60's with this one. Remake of Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Not sure if it really adds something to the Monkees version, but it is nice to see the greatness of this song recognized. And it would be great to hear live.
Hey! Nothing against the Shins, but where's the Monkees follow to the cover? Bill, you've taught us to expect these things.

I gotta go with the Sex Pistols version. However, Mickey Dolenz can carry a tune way better than Sid Vicious can (or could...sorry, Sid, please don't gob on me from the great beyond!).

I'm kinda shocked - that's a terrible cover and even Mike Campbell's guitar at the end can't save it. Why bother?

Ah, the Monkees. Great show. Now I'm going to have "Gonna Buy me a Dog" stuck in my head.

that was awesome!
It was first recorded by Paul Revere & the Raiders and appeared on their album Midnight Ride, released in May 1966.

Also recorded by the Sex Pistols. (That would make a great trivia question: what song has been recorded by...")

Make a point to have dinner in Seminole Heights before the concert - Ella's, Taco Bus, The Refinery - all good.
Have my tickets to see him in September in Tampa, can't wait!
If you haven't checked it out, his radio show ("Buried Treasure" on XM) is awesome. He digs deep and finds some awesome gems. I may upgrade to the on-demand streaming of XM just so I can play his shows while working from my home office. I love RP, and this show is very similar, but with awesome TP commentary.

Bill, you goofball, I love ya.
Better than what I'm used to hearing from Petty.

Man, I love it when Petty dips into the nuggets. Oddly, I recall both the Paul Revere and Monkees' versions. Ooh, now that's old.
O!M!G!
Way back Thursday!
