She has the sweetest, darkest side
And when it comes into her eyes
I know iron and steel couldn't hold me
Good God, I'm easy bruised
But so often a moth to her flame
And the things that she's asked me to do
Would see a senior saint forgetting his name
I have an audience with the Pope
And I'm saving the world at eight
But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me
Everybody's going to have to wait, ah, ah
Where could she be?
Was that a minute or an hour?
Where could she be?
She turns the hours into days
Kill the phone, cover the cage
And wait for the doorbell to ring
Where could she be?
No, she won't come running
Where could she be?
The world is turning at her pace
Gonna kill the phone, cover the cage
And wait for the doorbell to ring
I have an audience with the pope
and I'm saving the world at eight
but if she says she needs me
she says she needs me everybody is going to have to wait
I have an audience with the Pope
And I'm saving the world at eight
But if she says she needs me, she says she needs me
Everybody's going to have to wait
I have an audience with the Pope

You just might be misinterpreting the meaning and significance of "the pope".
it's just about a guy who would drop everything he's doing
no matter how important they are to be with this girl
so when she calls he does (drop everything)
and then she keeps him waiting
all that Pope stuff is just symbolic of important things to do
nothing kinky here to see, move along
He's waiting for his dominatrix.
Naw, just another case of pussy whipped ...

even more boring than radio head.
Not it often I hit the psd button but here I go.
Now this tune is the ringtone for my wife.
Lippy Kids is my ringtone. I also was introduced to Elbow by RP, thank you Bill!. Elbow is also my Pandora station of choice which has introduced me to even more good music.
But Elbow is alright!
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It's great to be back at the Basilica! But seriously, though, folks... My wife ordered something simple at a restaurant, the waiter sent me to her table! (drumroll).... Feel free to save your applause for the end of the show, your holiness! You might be a redneck if you insist on drinking communion wine with a straw! Your priest might be a redneck if Boone's Farm is his communion wine of choice! What's the deal with that Yoko Ono?! What about all that traffic in Rome?!! Your holiness, have I got a treat for you! I'm going to do my impression of Jack Nicholson working at a Taco Bell!...."

LOL - Could probably say the same thing for every great love song. Dig this one mightily, BTW.
Sorry, should have been droll, but the spell-checker "corrected" it for me for some reason...
But this guys voice just ruins it for me.
He's using this definition:

There's this thing called the Internet that provides all types of info.

Yeah, they set the bar rather high. Hope they can top it!
Have you heard their cover of "mercy street" (peter gabriel song), elbow scratched back...
Sounds like a 78 rpm single played at 33 rpm!
...ooops! I'm showing my age!
Grandmas in Asheville tend to be just a little cooler than most.
Thank you Bill for increasing your play of Elbow. Can never get enough of these guys :)
Yeah, they set the bar rather high. Hope they can top it!
I second that
The motion to have more Elbow carries, Mr. President please see to it that this motion is enacted ASAP. . .
I second that
This is the best comment for this song, perfect!
Thanks! the right picture truly is worth a thousand words..
"...audience with the Peup..."

The 2 disc CD is out April 7th, and since the first release, it 'aint cheap for those of us across the pond.....Maybe Bill will get hold of this release and let us have a listen.
Just bought the box set with the dvd, should arrive in a couple of days... maybe I'll upload a few tracks =)

A must have!!!!!
One Day Like This?
I see a lot of people saying that Elbow sound like Peter Gabriel, but the only song that really sounds like Peter to me is One Day Like This.
I love this !!!!!!!
On Saturday 17th January 2009 at the world famous Abbey Road studios in London, Elbow performed the entirety of their Mercury Music Prize winning album The Seldom Seen Kid with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Chantage, the winners of Radio 3's Choir Of The Year competition. The unique performance of the album was seen by a select audience and was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on the evening of Saturday 31st January. The show saw the band play new and exclusive versions of the songs from the album in order. They were joined (as on the album) by Richard Hawley for The Fix.
This import features the standard 11-track album along with a DVD of the aformentioned performance, featuring all 11 album tracks.
Elbow playing their Seldom Seen Kid album with the BBC Concert Orchestra.....I think I'm going to really like this one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I LOVE ELBOW! This album is simply stellar! A 10 from me!
sounds like Dave Matthews voice-wise
*ducks and runs*
Actually, more like Sting.
A good alblum indeed. Happy to have it. Especially excellent in a mix with other alblums of equal caliber.
It's like a fungus isn't it.
All four albums are worth having...most days I think this most recent release is my favorite.

The band is named after a line in the BBC TV mini-series The Singing Detective;
a character (Philip Marlow) says that the word "elbow" is the most sensuous word in the English language, not for its definition,
but for how it feels to say it.
Mmm.. British humor. Maybe it's a play on the phrase "cellar door", which I never understood.
Ditto!

sounds like Geter Pabriel
Well put. What's more is that their sound is unique; they can't be mistaken with anyone else. I've been able to associate every song that I've heard to them without hearing their name or clicking on RP "Now Playing".
This will be my next CD purchase.
I've noticed that bc posts a question on the "Grounds for Divorce" comment thread:
"How are their other albums?"
I'd like to pose that question again.
Anyone?
I have two others, Cast of Thousands and Leaders of the Free World. Both are excellent, although this one's probably my favorite by a whisker. But you can't go wrong with either of those (there may be one or two that came out before them, but I haven't picked them up yet)
Absolutely right
Thanks RP!
thanks
Or was it the other way around?
Hmmmm.
I agree, it is so subtle. Each listen is better than the last, for over a week now. I bought FOUR copies to give as gifts. I also agree with some of the other posters - when one of their songs come on, I just KNOW it is Elbow. Of course I check out the playlist to confirm.
Apart from having a great voice mr. Guy Garvey is a talented poet. Luckily the lyrics (poems?) are reprinted interily in the very nice CD cover. Of course, the rest of the band just makes outstanding music. A great discovery on RP for me.

Elbow are one of those bands that creep into your subconscious unawares.
A track comes on and I think "who is *that*, it's fantastic?" only to find it's a track that I have heard before, but not particularly noticed.

That felt much better the 2nd time around. Still reserve the right to rate spontaniously ,but perhaps the third time
will be a charm. If nothing else their quite eclectic—— in a good way. Thanks Bill .

Currently a 7, but I have a feeling it will be going up the next time I listen.
I know I've posted the same thing for all those cuts, but this is a fantastic CD. One of this year's best, IMHO.
Aww jeah — ya really look good in-vestments. Mea Culpa ! Couldn't pass on that one. . ,.
It has a "spy movie" soundtrack quality to it. I can't quite explain why!
