Fionna Apple's music has always resonated with me in a beautiful but melancholy way. It was great to sing along with during a big breakup! "When the Pawn..." is one of my faves, but this album was hit or miss. There were a few songs that I thought were great. This was not one of them.
This and "Extraordinary Machine" have really made me take a second look at Fiona's work. Much love for the quirky yet coherent dissonance.
A few songs on this album I could take or leave but the one's I would take...I really love.

What is that on the CD cover? Peas? What kind of peas? They're shaped like garbonzos.
Your a curious sort aren't you?
maybe i'm off my hinges, but i like her dissonance.

What, you prefer unintentional dissonance?

On hearing a couple tunes from this CD I bought it. I must admit Fiona takes a bit getting use to. Her style is certainly unique. There's no comparing her to...well, anyone! It's not a CD I play every day but every once in a while it's not too bad. I must give her credit for being unique in this copycat world of Dave Matthews, U2 and Coldplay sound-alikes.
Yeah, I can't quite put my finger on why. Odd was the first word that came to mind.

I never cared much for Fiona Apple before, but I can't get enough of this album. It's fantastic!

I saw her on Jimmy Kimmel recently and she said she took the pictures on the CD. I didn't get the impression there was any significance to the peas other than I think she just liked the picture.

love it.
love the waltz. the song is very consistent, but I love how much her music changes with each album.
I LOVE THIS SONG!
Too much intentional dissonance for my tastes.
Wow, I really like the mix of traditional elements breaking up...I gives you a very strange feeling..I got visions of the hotel from "The Shine"

Btw, I like Fiona's song - kind of a chantoozie's 'f--- you' to the judgementalists that lamentably populate much of the world.

They're 'hijacker beans' - they move into abandoned peapods and set up roots.

Odd.

Odd song. Kind of like Edith Piaf played at half-speed. I do like the strings and horns; the heavy piano chords not so much.
I use to be an avid Fiona fan but this album has lost me.
I love the first half of this album. A very interesting sound. Listening to the whole album gets to be kinda much though.
I loved "When the Pawn..." but I haven't warmed up to this one yet.
