If a name needs to be relevant to "the whole band," - - - "Over the Rhine borrowed their name from one of Cincinnati's most colorful and controversial neighborhoods. From its earliest days, the area served as a port-of-entry for immigrants and, over the years, has become a melting pot where people strive to make better lives for themselves. It's here in this storied neighborhood that Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler first began making their music, somehow imbuing it with the tattered but lovely craftsmanship and sense of history that surrounded them."
Thanks for the positive clarification. The area, OTR is only one example of our metro-city political leaders not tending to "home". OTR has some great architecture and history. Main street continues to struggle to revive. Very sad for a native daughter.
... Simply Hauntingly Beautiful ! ...
I thought they were boring in the early 90s and my opinion is only reinforced - boring noodling...
Is John the only dreamer? It's not the spark that caused the fire It was the air you breathed that fanned the flame What you think you'll solve with violence Will only spread like a disease Until it all comes 'round again Was John the only dreamer? Sleep with one ear close to the ground And wake up screaming When we lay our cold weapons down We'll wake up dreaming Obsessions with self-preservation Faded when I threw my fear away It's not a thing you can imagine You either lose your fear Or spend your life with one foot in the grave Is God the last romantic? Sleep with one ear close to the ground And wake up screaming When we lay our cold weapons down We'll wake up dreaming Only love can turn this around I wake up dreaming Everything we've lost can be found We'll wake up dreaming

This band always makes me so happy. I've seen them a few times and will never see them enough. Their music seems to fit my every mood and speak to me wherever I am.
We're on the same frequency....my thoughts exactly*
12:29 pm - Over the Rhine - Spark 12:25 pm - Howard Jones - No One Is To Blame (Acoustic) 12:22 pm - Morrissey - Everyday Is Like Sunday _______________ What a gorgeously melancholy set. And this track is growing on me.
Not riveting on first listen. Pleasant. This might grow on me...no roots or shoots yet, however.
Very nice on first listen. I wouldn't be surprised to find that this one grows on me.

Based upon my recollection from living in Cincinnati in the early 90s, this part of the city is not particularly nice. . . .
It's been trending upward, I'm told, but it's a long, slow process. There's a lot of cool old buildings in that neighborhood, and you hate to see a place like that in a state of decay.

They're from Cincinnati, and live in a part of the city called "Over the Rhine." The Miami & Erie canal used to run across the north boundary of the original city. As the population grew, a lot of German immigrants settled north of the canal, and it was said that if you crossed the canal, it was like crossing the Rhine river and entering Germany. The name stuck.
Based upon my recollection from living in Cincinnati in the early 90s, this part of the city is not particularly nice. At any rate, some nice music from them.

I wonder about the name. What has the Rhine to do with the whole band? Wonderful voice anyway. Giving it a 7.
I don't know, but there is an area in Cincinnati called "Over the Rhine", which was named by the German settlers. Since the crack dealers have taken over, it's pretty much like every other slum in every other major city. Not really sure where the band is from, but if they are from Cinci, the name is pretty unoriginal.

very nice & mellow love her voice!
Quitte like this song... there is a Walkabouts hint in it...
Another masterpiece. OTR are at the top of their game right now. My favorite song from an incredible album.
I'm quite amazed at the low rating for this song. Over the Rhine is quite a talented group and are amazing live. They write and perform music the way it should be...heartfelt and meaningful. I'm afraid that maybe some folks aren't getting that depth here, or it would be much higher in regards to its rating. Karin and Linford have music to express who they are, it's not just something they "do."
Waiting for Bono to end this song with a little dance.
