If you think that a kiss is all in the lips
C'mon, you got it all wrong, man
And if you think that our dance was all in the hips
Oh well, then do the twist
If you think holding hands is all in the fingers
Grab hold of the soul where the memory lingers and
Make sure to never do it with the singer
'Cause he'll tell everyone in the world

What he was thinking about the girl
Ya, what he's thinking about the girl, oh

A lot of people get confused and they bruise
Real easy when it comes to love
They start putting on their shoes and walking out
And singing "boy, I think I had enough"

Just because she makes a big rumpus
She don't mean to be mean or hurt you on purpose, boy
Take a tip and do yourself a little service
Take a mountain turn it into a mole

Just by playing a different role
Ya, by playing a different role, oh

The boat ya you know she's rockin' it
And the truth well ya know there's no stoppin' it

The boat ya you know she's still rockin' it
The truth well you know there's no stoppin' it

So what, somebody left you in a rut
And wants to be the one who's in control
But the feeling that you're under can really make you wonder
How the hell she can be so cold

So now you're mad, denying the truth
And it's hidden in the wisdom in the back of your tooth
Ya need ta spit it out, in a telephone booth
While ya call everyone that you know, and ask 'em

Where do you think she goes
Oh ya, where d'ya suppose she goes, oh

The truth well you know there's no stoppin' it
And the boat well ya know she's still rockin' it

The boat ya you know she's still rockin' it
And the truth ya you know there's no stoppin' it

You recognize with your back in the back?
That it's colder when she rocks the boat
But it's the cause hittin on the Cardinal Laws?
'bout the proper place to hang her coat

So to you, the truth is still hidden
And the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten but
You should know that the doctors weren't kiddin?
She's been singing it all along

But you were hearin' a different song
Ya you were hearin' a different song
But you were hearin' a different song

April 8, 2022 - Jack White plays National Anthem at Tiger Stadium on opening day and then plays Supply Chain Issues concert at Masonic Temple in Detroit.  Man, I love me some Jack!!!
Good tune!
Are "The White Stripes" by their own definition
a middle of the road band?
I know of no other band that could get away with their songs sounding so similar.

This was the last new album I remember Tower Records hyping with a big record release party before they collectively threw up their hands and locked the doors for good.
Hot Damn!
I really appreciate how Jack loves to go as far as he can with everything he has, like Byrne and Belew and so many other unorthodox wildcats jammed for our perpetual enjoyment on RP!
RP rarely converts me.  I used to dismiss all his albums as whatever.  But I ended up getting Jack White's latest album — totally in love.  The one with the vulture sitting on his shoulder on the cover.  It's crazy, but I hear the over-pedalled piano minor scale riffs in my sleep - it's become a brain obsession that I just can't shake.
Funky? More like gunky. Junky. Spastic Monkey. Check yoself out some soul music. This ain't it.

Dang, this is funky.
What initially turned me off about The White Stripes was Jack White's near-hysterical vocals - always reminded me of "Ballroom Blitz" by The Sweet.  I must be getting older, or maybe more mature in my listening habits, because this song didn't have me lunging for the mouse to click on the mute button.  Hmmm. {#Dancingbanana_2}

It's crude, but I like it when I'm in a mood...I'm just not in it right now.
RIP Stripes

Yet another nice retro sound from the Stripes.  Great groove.

Hottest drummer since Karen Carpenter.

ETA:  And I don't mind saying, *this* has got a good beat.
Quite interesting interpretive style! {#Devil_pimp}

Thanks for that.  Your comment to a previously unknown artist (to me) sparked a trip to Wikipedia, then a half hour of youtube...

P.S.  Actually, I've heard 'Do You Know What I Mean' many times, just didn't know it was him...

Agreed. Well said.

so glad to hear WS again on RP.  Seems to have been a big lull.

This post made me laugh.

(Jack White not Jack Black, and Jack White is in the Raconteurs. But for some reason I think you already know that. If not, sorry for laughing!)

Now all we need are a line of umpa-lumpas dancing
I just saw "Walk Hard" last night and Jack White makes a pretty funny Elvis.
thank you RP for some rockin White Stripes - my XM-in-the-car seems to know only one tepid WS track, i mean they tried hard to find the worst one to play constantly XM sucks - can we PLEASE have RP in the car?? now?

Well I am about as far from a musician as you can get, tone deaf engineer, but I USED to agree with you. Subpar instrument playing and singing, but to catchy tunes. But after listinging to them alot, one of my brother's faveroite bands, I have changed my mind. I used to get hung up on the no bass, sorta hollow sound, with the sloppy guitar. But they have gotten better, and the piano on 'Get behinde me Satin' really filled in their sound so I started to listen to that album. Then I started to like their other music. They have an AC/DC, or Franz Ferdinand, appeal to me. I really have no reason to like it on a musical level. The songs are just really catchy and great to listen to.
"Get Behinde Me Satin"? Is that on the latest CD at Victoria's Secret? Maybe that's "Get me Satin Behind"...?
Great album top to bottom IMO.
Went to get a cup of coffee and we're back to the good music now.

Add me to the list of those who "don't get" the White Stripes. amb599 called them "poster children for bad music", and I would agree with that if I could see any semblance of music in their work. Out of curiosity, are there any real musicians who think the WS are worth the plastic their CDs are pressed from? I can see how the raw, untamed sound could appeal to some of the masses, but does anyone who knows and competently plays music actually like this band?
I haven't listent to the WS much, but I have liked what I heard. I can tell you about my buddy Scott who was a big WS fan, a total music snob, and a fantastic musician. He played primarily ragtime and pre-war blues guitar, and really well. He constantly bemoaned the lack of skill and poor taste of modern music, but the WS apparenlty made it into his good graces. As a mediocre musician, I really appreciate skill, when it isn't just skill for skill's sake (can't stand Satriani for example), and I really appreciate creativity. I think the WS seem to be trying to do something interesting, besides just selling records. But I'll have to spend more time listening to them to really judge.
I've been thinkin' about the doorbell, when ya gonna ring it, when ya gonna ring it! I like this song, but it's definitely too close to "My Doorbell" to be on the same album IMHO.
This song always catches my attention and makes me squeal with glee when I hear that first note.
Sweet! More White Stripes please!! One of the very best of 2005...
this is a decent song, but they really make alot of junk.

I dont mind hearing them, but yet to have purchased any of their albums. As a musician I would only say that all music has it's place. To understand the music is to know the writer alittle more than you did just before you heard it. Would you ever walk up to your child who gave you a drawing and say that sucks, or do you take into consideration the meaning? Are you people out there in the world more about format or content?

Jack is amazing because he creates music the way it used to be. WS may sound like bands from the 70s but they have more of an edgy twist that make them an original that I can listen to anytime I want to get into a groove.

They can hardly carry a tune on album either, but like the Velvet Underground, it's that chaos that makes them kinda cool. Haven't seen or heard them live tho.

I love this song!!! Makes me want to dance everytime I hear it! I adore the White Stripes. Best band to come along in too long a time! Makes me love rock n roll again.

This album is great - I think that it really shows how good this band is and will be. Plus, Meg needs a spanking (in a good way).
Bleh, the White Stripes have to come and ruin my otherwise enjoyable RP groove. The vocals in every single song of theirs are absolutely atrocious.
The lyrics are something to behold: . . . Just because she makes a big rumpus She don't mean to be mean or hurt you on purpose, boy Take a tip and do yourself a little service Take a mountain turn it into a mole Just by playing a different role . . .
I like this "boy".
Can I give this a 20? A 10 just isn't enough. Love the White Stripes, LOVE THIS SONG!
I just want to get up and dance!!!! It's amazing
really good album. i like the song on the album about even the dog gets it. sometimes the best music is the simplest.
I saw The White Stripes at the end of January 2006 and I was struck by what a great showman Jack White has become. A very, very sexy man, and refreshing to see someone choose his own look instead of regarding Spinal Tap as a style bible. I cant remember him speaking more than a dozen words, but he held the audience in the palm of his hand. The audience displayed a very wide demographic range, showing the appeal of the band is very broad. Not sure Meg has much of a solo career ahead of her, however, when Jack pursues his 'other projects'!

Moved from a 6 to a 7. Pretty good when played loud.

But I think it would never be played on RP though. Oh, and listen to DFA1979 as loud as you can. When the plaster on the walls start to crack, you are doing well. on topic: WS are nice too btw.

Good grief. This is the most annoying duo that has come along in decades.
would be enjoyable were it not for the drummer. terrible drumming.
I'm relatively new to WS, but it gets better on every listen!
The Doors never had a bass player until the end, when they used Elvis's old bassist: Jerry Scheff. But before Jerry, Ray Manzarek was a wiz at filling in the bottom of the rhythm section with the Fender Rhodes and flying feet working those foot pedals. But remember that the bottom line can be provided by piano, organ--even tuba!
White Stripes is one of the best bands (duo)!!! I love the video of this song w/ Conan O'Brien. They got a great imagery.

Good watchin: KRCW set (click here) (64mb) Technically, the white stripes are poster children for bad music. They break the rules to make it work. For some, this doesn't make it, but if you can keep up it's very good stuff. One oddity about WS is that ryhthm and timing is not supplied by the percussion.
I agree. I don't get it. I want to and I come close, but never quite get there.
I try to listen to this one every time it comes on, and every time I wind up either muting or fleeing the room to get away from it. I want to get it, but it ain't workin'.

Nah - nonsense. I saw them live a couple of years ago - so before this song - but they were absolutely storming. Not sure what Meg adds to things, but Jack was in virtuoso form. It was definitely not wienerless!
A few listens have revealed that this is a bit of a crib of their earlier "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground."
