Walking to the other side
With the devil trying to take my mind
And my soul's just a silhouette
On the ashes of a cigarette
Illusions never fake their lives
Trick cards fool the eyes
Carry zeroes over 'til they add up
Bury tears in the chapters you shut
Sometimes the jail can't chain the cell
And the rain's too plain to tell
All alone by a barren well
Scarecrow's only scaring himself
I've been digging the ground
Beneath the dust and the clouds
I see miles and miles
Of junkyard piles
I wanted hope from a grave
I wanted strength from a spade
What gives you comfort now
Might be the end of your vein
Crows are pulling at my clothes
The wind got my fingers froze
Standin' all day, keepin' watch
Over all the treasures we've lost
Sometimes the jail can't chain the cell
And the rain's to plain to tell
All alone by a barren well
The scarecrow's only scaring himself
Oooh ooh ooh
Oooh ooh ooh
Scarecrow's only scaring himself
Scarecrow's only scaring himself

Had this on heavy rotation in my iPod when this came out. I still think it's super-groovy! Cool cover: Diego Rivera's disembodied head!
This whole record is amazing, but I think that this one & Que Onda Guero are among the best he's ever done! Beck is quite The Artist!

Best by Beck that I've heard for a while. Just wish he would occasionally sing with a bit of passion!
Good stuff. Very good.
Not saying anything negative cuz that's not nice.

Now I'll have to go back and listen to the whole album again. I must have missed this song. And yes, it is a good one. 8
love this whole album. actually the whole set that's been playing for the last half hour has been great.

Somehow manages to be completely original and yet rather catchy, even on a first listen. Nice!
J.J. Cale would be proud.
He seems to always push the envelope. What a talent.
Love it.

The bass line is very similar to "Billie Jean," but not identical—at least not the way I learned to play it. That said, what strikes me about this song, indeed the whole of Beck's work, is his ability to summon shards of rock's past and reform them to his own devices. His encyclopedic knowledge of rock history, much like Dylan and Prince, serves as the foundation for his own compositions. In the end he sounds refreshingly new, yet hauntingly familiar. Pretty cool.

Yeah -- Why, indeed, the church of LRon? but Senor Beck has crafted a rare and true gem or two I love to repetitive little bits...
It's official: Grampa likes Beck.

7 on an album that scores a 9. Not that it's even one of the lower rated songs on the album, the album's just a great cumulative effort .
I love this song. One of my all-time favorites.
Just a *touch* of Tom McRae's
Walking to Hawaii-
7.

Not a bad song, not a bad album, but nowhere equal to Sea Change (esp. in SACD format).
This has to be Beck's best impersonation of himself. I mean, this has to be the first time I've heard a song and thought "This guy sounds a lot like Beck", only to find out that it was him.

BTW, this is not the strongest song on this album. ==
Beck's stuff will always be hit and miss for me. More often than not, there's little hope of ever understanding a smidgeon of his lyrical content.
Still, rather catchy tune, makes me wanna sway and shake a little
This song is deemed Clear ...OT Level III all the way.

I googled it and its true. How depressing. Well. if it helps him compose then more power to him. Scientology theology is even more ridiculous than mosst religions. They do have some useful exercises though I think. But they exploit the poor and gullible into taking out $10K loans for their "classes" which is a crime.

I thought the same thing, but then said to myself, nah, it's late and I am tired..must be hearing things. Glad someone else hears it as well!
Very interesting sound. There is much here that I like.
:nodhead: The lyrics really do it :nodhead:
Well there's not much else in there really is there ?

Danny--Sense of Humor Check coming up. You ready? Okay: This guy walks into a bar . . .
Etc. I understand your point, of course. My comment was meant to express my own mystification at what might be the oldest adage there is: there's no accounting for taste.
And I admit--humorously, or so I intended--that it may well be MY taste that is, in the case of Beck, unnaccountable.
Made me shake it off in my little cubicle.

Scott, its so funny... I would have said the same thing when Odelay came out. The first time I listened to it I really didn't like it and thought WTF? I don't know how long it was, at least a year though, before I played it again. Something happened to me between the first time I heard it and that second listening. It was like my brain had changed how it perceived the music. I don't know how to explain it except that I had listened to a lot of other music and was just in a different place.
But now... I am one of the Beck worshipers. He is the forefront of musical evolution. Cannot get enough of this guy. Go figure!
Yup the same thing happend for me too! I think the difference for me was getting exposed to more "electronic" music, which made me better able to tell that what Beck was doing was very unique and brilliant.

Beck is brilliant and ORIGINAL. I feel like I am on a safari in the ghetto and peering at the cosmos here with this unusual song. I only wish I had the ingenuity that he does to take all those ideas and blend it into a marketable product that's entertaining to listen to, and leaves you wanting more brain candy!

Wow this is awesome. Sounds like 'the art of noise', a bit of the Robert Palmer era... Love it.

Each track on this masterpiece of a disc is a sonic shmorgasbord. Love it that so many tracks are in the library.
Need to add "Black Tambourine," too. Down and dirty drum and bass fest, it is.
I just gotta say (not that it really matters to anyone!) that I didn't really find Beck's last album very interesting at all. This one is just the opposite. Every tune I hear off of it makes me stop workin to listen! Guess I gotta get the album.
Great song! It's got a great theme to it, and it's really catchy (as is the entire album).
It sounds a bit like Robert Palmer being revived(?) through Beck
* tapping the keybord *.... \:D/
damn.... undo, undo, undo...
Not my favorite on what is a good disc.
So far it's a 7...
plodding, repetitive, no real hooks, I'm not entranced by it's trance attempt...
Waiter, a 10 for the song in the corner, with my compliments. Thanks, you're a peach.
Second cut I've heard off of it. And loving it, too. Beck continues to amaze and delight.
Boring as hell.....
Be patient, Paul Simon is just around the corner.
