You wait in the car on the side of the road
Lemme go and stand awhile, I wanna know you're there but I wanna be alone
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind

I walked out in a field, the grass was high, it brushed against my legs
I just stood and looked out at the open space and a farmhouse out a ways
And I wondered about the people who lived in it
And I wondered if they were happy and content
Were there children and a man and a wife?
Did she love him and take her hair down at night?

If I stray away too far from you, don't go and try to find me
It doesn't mean I don't love you, it doesn't mean I won't come back and
Stay beside you
It only means I need a little time
To follow that unbroken line
To a place where the wild things grow
To a place where I used to always go

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la
La la la la, la la la, la la la, la la la
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind

From wikipedia,

Emmylou Harris
said of Williams, "She is an example of the best of what country at
least says it is, but, for some reason, she's completely out of the loop
and I feel strongly that that's country music's loss."

Lucinda is godlike. When she sings, just listen.
Not a huge Lucinda fan, but this one really stands out.

Jeezum Crow, what a voice!

Yes!  Saw her at the Commodore in Vancouver (a fairly large venue) and I'll never forget being gobsmacked by how that voice just FILLED the place.
This woman has Big Medicine
I always thought this was a Ben Folds song .  Radio Paradise -- always furthering my music education
Wow, when she could still sing...

I think the only thing she burned out was her liver.

Wow. I actually like her voice on this. Very nice. I thought she'd always sounded like a drunk chic from Beaumont at a Karaoke bar. {#Ask}

i think she was drunk on her ass at least half the time.  brilliant, though.  i love her.

Old-school Lucinda is the best!
Thanks for playing pre-burnout Lucinda...lovely
Love this song, always reminds of a road trip I took in Colorado!  Good times!

Jeezum Crow, what a voice!

This was the first song of Lucinda's I ever heard- went out and got the CD right away. I have been hooked ever since am a huge fan of pretty much all her work.  This song draws you in and is just perfect- love it, just wish it was a little longer. I don't understand how anyone can criticize this song- but then again, I'm a rational person.

One of my faves... thanks for making my day!
Sounds a bit like Shawn Colvin's 'Cinnamon Road'.... but not as good. {#Beat}

I'm in the Farmhouse,LoL.

That's where I think we should leave Ms. Williams; on the side of the road. {#Headache}

Cool! I would STRONGLY encourage you to purchase this CD and then move on to "Car Wheels on A Gravel Road" (1998). {#Sunny}

This sounds like an old tired out version of Thunder Road.

Oh wait, it IS an old tired out version.

*sigh*

This is probably my favorite song of hers, from my favorite album.

There are two versions of this song on the original lp - never could decide which one I loved more. My daughter grew up with this song from the age of three (she's almost 16 now) and still refers to this as "The Grass Was High" song...
this is my favorite song, from my favorite lp as well....

Right you are... I didn't know she could actually sing in a conventional manner. This must have been recorded before she started regaling in her dysfunction, eh?

Nice! Never heard this before.
Well, that was certainly nice and short.
This is a great record, one of her best.

Love that violin.  {#Boohoo}

So nice to hear LW singing straight out. Lovely.
Just so happy to hear here, this great song from this truly gifted songwriter.
I know others have covered this, but nothing touches Lucinda's original. Stunning.
Nice song, great vocals.
Always liked this song and Lucinda. Have a few friends who don't get her. That doesn't make them bad people, simply misguided. Guess we are all entitled to our personal musical taste (even hip-hop).
Isn't this a Ben Folds song?
Wow! A happy Lucinda tune! Just love her, happy or miserable.

Never heard this song before today, but once again, the money left in my itunes account is dwindling due to RP.
I thought this was Chrissie Hynde from the voice. Great voice and a beautiful song.
Bout time we got a tune from this older Lucinda album. 'Changed the locks' is another great tune from this one.
