Got no time for the corner boys,
Down in the street makin' all that noise,
Don't want no whores on eighth avenue,
Cause tonight I'm gonna be with you.
Cause tonight I'm gonna take that ride,
Across the river to the jersey side,
Take my baby to the carnival,
And I'll take you on all the rides,
Sing sha la la la la la sha la la la.
Down the shore everything's alright,
You with your baby on a saturday night,
Don't you know that all my dreams come true,
When I'm walkin' down the street with you,
Sing sha la la la la la sha la la la.
You know she thrills me with all her charms,
When I'm wrapped up in my baby's arms,
My little angel gives me everything,
I know someday that she'll wear my ring.
So don't bother me cause I got no time,
I'm on my way to see that girl of mine,
Nothin' else matters in this whole wide world,
When you're in love with a jersey girl,
Sing sha la la la la la la.
And I call your name, I can't sleep at night, sha la la la la la la.
Down in the street makin' all that noise,
Don't want no whores on eighth avenue,
Cause tonight I'm gonna be with you.

One of my personal favourites, though not the best of mr. Waits heritage at the same time... 9!
All I can think of is that his 401K was plundered and he has to keep on working...

The song is good, but I personally don't really like the voice.. Just too grating.
This isn't the best example of Waits. His other stuff is much better, and the material much better suits his rough, melancholy voice.

Note to Tom Waits: The late 80's called, they want their scratchy-voiced songs about "$LOCATION girl" back.
Huh. Guess he was ahead of his time, eh?
I like Holly Cole's version better. :-s
Tom Waits and Ron Perlman-seperated at birth?
Think about it. That big, lion-faced critter singing this....
Uh-huh.

Yes. Yes? Yes.
Perfect!
. . .and fear/paranoia: "What's he building in there?"

That is the amazing thing about his sound. Give his new disks a spin and listen to the emotion, soul, and tragedy he is able to emote.
Plus the madness he makes! That one song he sings in German, The Eyball Kid, I'm Big in Japan.
He's awesome!

I like Tom's early work. He's got real soul. However, as he has aged, his voice has become more grating to me. I still appreciate his emotional style, but have a tough time listening to that gravely voice. Anyone else relate?

That's a good one. There are so many!
One of my fav is "when did you start combing your hair with a wrench?" ...

I'm so glad to be hearing some Waits originals mixed in among the covers.
We're getting more Waits lately

Damn, I don't play Tom near enough. Spent a lot of time with him during my lost weekend (1981-1989).
Tom Waits is thrillingly grotesque.

But isn't it? It just shows that he can always write something simple and beautiful if he wants to. In the case of singing something for his wife, he chose just that.
I love this song.
