Tu eres candela.
Afina los cueros.
Candela, muchacho.
Se volviò loco Barbarito, hay que ingresarlo.
As I mix and drink another sublime caipirinha (Brazilian, I know, but I have no mint for proper mojito, gomen!), I caress and crank the Volume knob...
Too funny!
it's funny. i almost always love any type of "latin" music that is played. instantly i am drawn to it. but, when i hear other types of (whatever the correct wording is called "world music?") i am not that interested. african, irish, indian, etc. - that never grabs me at all. but any type of latin music, and especially this example - all BVSC - i really, really like.
Except for Loreena Mckennett, NO Irish folk music for me! I Like the Irish music that drunks sing in bars, while swinging their mugs back & forth, and spilling their drinks!! I DO like MOST of the World Music, here on RP! Thanx RP!
I'kl have a margarita on the rocks.
Cuba Libre for me!!
Could any tune make you want to party more?
Nope!
Out of 400+ CDs I own, one of my favorites. Incredible musicianship that might have gone undocumented if not for Ry Cooder.
So True.
For anyone unfamiliar with Ry.... Well worth the dive.
Look and Listen to Ry's contributions.
Decades of Brilliance.
Wow...thanks for that VH1....you're alright in my book and thanks for spreading the "really now, is HATE the right word here?" message to the world! Long Live RP, short live hate and Rock On!!
If you are going to hate, hate constructively, hate the starters of war etc., not music, if you dont like it, switch it off.
Absolutely! Je suis d'accord!
In the fall of 2002, while I was packing up to go and join my then-husband in Alberta, and living in a basement apartment while I dealt with a large storage unit full of our stuff to be moved, a dear friend gave me a small TV with a built-in VHS player. I played Buena Vista Social Club over and over and over, while I danced around dealing with things which would normally have me quite depressed. The music helped me keep perspective and to remember what a glorious and complex world we have the privilege of living in. I went out and bought 8 3-packs of blank VHS tapes, made 12 copies of BVSC, and 12 copies of Baraka, and was pretty much ready for Christmas.
Loved the movie/documentary as well, especially the guys walking around NYC and seeing many of the places they had played back in the day.

There is deffo too much hatred in the world, and not enough "live and let live". No - nowadays everything gets "hated"!
I sometimes wonder, where does all this hate come from?
Too much and not enough
20 years ago people use to say "I do not like this or that" since the implementation of the internet people only say "I HATE this and that"! Geez.

1.This is a call out to Ibrahim to sing the next verse
2.wink wink
3.After this, there is a solo after which they say "on fire boy!" in response to it.
4.Little Bárbaro (male for Barbara, or simply 'little barbarian')
5.These are chorus repetitions with some how's thrown in

Yes, "hate" is a strong world. But I certainly dislike the repetitive nature of most Latin Jazz, in the same way I dislike EDM.
I don't think it does, really.
AFAIK the songs on this album predate the Cuban revolution, and in any case they have no political meaning or intent.
It's just Cuba, despite any politics.
Exactly...and the Wiki pages says:
Buena Vista Social Club is an ensemble of Cuban musicians established in 1996 to revive the music of pre-revolutionary Cuba. The project was organized by World Circuit executive Nick Gold, produced by American guitarist Ry Cooder and directed by Juan de Marcos González. They named the group after the homonymous members' club in the Buenavista quarter of Havana, a popular music venue in the 1940s. To showcase the popular styles of the time, such as son, bolero and danzón, they recruited a dozen veteran musicians, many of whom had been retired for many years.
I'll go +1 to 9 on this one....now where's my drink? Long Live RP!!

Your right.
I don't like this music.
But I appreciate the craftsmanship it took to make it... I could never do this.

Music is the best ambassador
Omg... wtf
This wasn't my reaction when I saw the post.
I have been to several former communist countries and Cuba seems to have escaped the creative poverty hunting many of the former communist countries.
Omg... wtf
i'm here via PSD
lucky me
Fantastic Music!
But it would be nice if the songs would play through - I do not understand why half through the songs stop playing!
that's frustrating. I've never had that happen before.

Awesome Mix Bill.
I disagree. This is a great song to wake up to. Gets the blood flowing!
If you do not hear it to often, its okay!

I agree. I even like the 'flat' recording. Evocative of the times when it was recorded.
I wholeheartedly support this. I spent some time researching the history of Cuba and (as usual) found what we have been spoon fed by popular media and western governments at odds with the facts. I look forward to visiting some day.
Ask Romeo for an invitation to his Hotel-room! Why dance alone...?
The imaginairy soundtrack to:
"How we survived American attacks on our integrity!"
That's gotta hurt.
Pura Vida!!!
Close to Cuba anyway
I got a hankering for a cuba libre
And then this comes on RP, and it all comes flooding back, and you realise that you were wrong; it is an astonishing song, place and country.
Can I go back, please?
Yes - go back. And please take me with you!!!!!! What a wonderful story for an armchair traveler like me. Thank you.

I'm experiencing severe vacation envy...sounds incredible (as does the album)...
"Nada como la forma de antaño para cantarle al sexo con esta descripción tan hermosa que te dice y que no, pero que sabes de qué se habla y canta. Quizás sea el tiempo de retomar lo antiguo para sentirse estimulado al natural y no por comerciales. "
"They are masters of music! It wolud be one of the biggest tragedies of the world if nobody continue their art. It should become parth of the world heritage! "
"Esta es la verdadera música cubana. No la cagada actual de reggeton. "
Hope you had a great time there and had plenty of opportunity to listen to music as good as this!
Probably some of both.
I'm talking about the noun, without the "n" on the end, which makes it an adjective. Do you think I'd make a statement like that without checking?
South Africa is the only African country with the noun "Africa" in its name.
No, it's not.
I don't care where you're from or what political affiliation you are, there is no way you can't start swaying and wish you had the smooth moves of Rickie Ricardo when you hear BVSC |
He did kind of like my Ry Cooder records, though..he was a big Chet Atkins fan, and knew good guitar work when he heard it. I wish he'd lived long enough to see the BVSC project. It might have changed his mind.

It's worth owning, as mood-provoking as it is. We enjoy pulling it out every now and then and rewatching it. The DVD gives one a whole 'nother notion of what Cuba is all about, IMHO. Now... if they could only do something about those Castro guys....
(Ché thought Batista was a corrupt SOB...)
But I would add that no other country beside the USA has "America" in its name. So by default, "American" specifically refers to a citizen of the USA. This was first used by Europeans and is conventional usage around the world today. America, oops, I mean the USA doesn't force it on anybody.

It's not uncommon for Europeans to use the words "America" and "American" (or their cognates in other languages) to refer to North, Central, and South America as a whole.
It's no big deal, it's just that the ambiguity can lead to confusion.
Happy holidays, Hannio!
Enjoy your trip, Meloman!
South Americans = people of South America
South America = the south side of America
so, why south americans are not americans?
They are. What's the big deal?
