All of those people
everywhere
ever so needing.
Where's it all leading?
Tell me where.
Nothing insincere.
I'd better have pity
I'd better go easy.
I never will lay down
While my heart is still beating.
Where's it all leading?
Walk on air.
Am I still dreaming?
Where's it all leading?
Words to spare.
Lost in their meaning.
I'd better be strong now.
I'd better stop dreaming.
My heart has flown away now.
Will it never stop beating?

Oddest thing; I have always found Brian Ferry's style of singing really grating, yet I cannot but recognise just how great he is and what a super group Roxy Music are. Shows just how subjective musical appreciation is.
Good Tune!! Thanx RP!
The world became a brighter more beautiful place when Avalon was released!!
Why am I expecting to hear Freddie Mercury? I have a mental wire crossed for some reason...
OK Roxy Music fans, Chairman Mao reincarnated as Bryan Ferry launches into Virginia Plain (Big Train - BBC sketch comedy show)
Big Train does Roxy Music

I'm having trouble getting the allure of this band, but glad to see how passionate others are about them
Pretty darned good, but...how can anyone beat how great it was when Avalon burst upon the scene? Life was never the same after!
...... just........ speechless........ 10 ++++
Favorite all time concert.
Saw them on the tour for Avalon in 1982. Still wish I had the tour t-shirt.

"for your pleasure" these crazy guys from Britain were playing the most exciting music in the seventies, in front we have Brian Eno (left) and Bryan Ferry (on the right side).
for the background I was using all their great cover girls.
airbrush, water colours, coloured pencils, collage, 1999
Double nice-captures the sensualness of the music and the creators!

This is a good song, but for some reason, I just can't shake the fact that the sax riff sounds waaay too much like Wham's Careless Whisper. Even though this song predates Wham, I just can't get it out of my head when I hear this song.
It sounds like a cheaper version of Slave to Love by Bryan Ferry.
the diversity of comments on this site make me grin

HmmHmm. I saw that Avalon tour, too. Great show by great players. I also saw their last tour here in the UK. A real "Roxy Music's favs" show and it was more than impressive. I felt a bit sorry for the folks that came expecting Avalon but what I got was a steady stream of Roxy Magic.
Saw them while they were touring in support of Avalon album. Live the music is nothing close of elevator music noted by some. Talented band and Ferry is just part of the band not "in your face front man".

Wonderful segue from Peter Gabriel - Blood of Eden to this Bill. You are right on your game this morning. The Avalon album was outstanding and spent many hours on the platter. 10 for the original version of this song.

Most excellent - love this song, love Roxy Music! The "Like A Hurricane" cover on this EP is one of my favorite covers of any song. No band creates an atmosphere quite like Roxy Music.
When the 4 song EP came out, i can't remember when, you had to take notice of this band's live work: Like a Hurricane and Jealous Guy. Yes!. This cd has those and more.. Great Stuff.

To fredriley and the nottingham jury; if you dislike music as intensely as it appears you do, why do you listen, masochistic? Perhaps a visual art form would be more satisfying, may I suggest sculpture.

Viva Roxy Music!
1980's soundscape was only two albums. I fired up my SACD version of Avalon and the outer body experience was fun.
The talent still of the members still goes strong today and their body of work has stood the test of time.
This is a european band first and formost.
I never got the Facist thing. With the girls always in the picture, I thought it a bit kinky!
Nobody has to like Ferry as he is a snobish bore, but the music is wonderful!
This band live always rose to great heights and Ferry worked hard on stage.

Like all general statements, saying that Roxy Music is a yup band will always hit exceptions such as yourself (and myself - to my shame I once had a SB album), but my memory is that RM, SB and similar were big with 80s yuppies who saw their product as 'aspirational music'.
Were RM innovative in parts? Sure, and credit where it's due. They also, though, had an unpleasant neo-fascist tinge to their 'style', as exemplified by Ferry dressing up in uniform, and the mysogyinistic flavour of some of their album covers, including this one.
I'm disagreeing with you fredriley twice in one day..must be some kind of record! I've never found Roxy Music at all fascist nor do I consider Ferry misogynistic. In fact, from his lyrics, I'd say he appreciates women who are not submissive. This is my take, a feminist who hates fascists!
Sadly, I also have to disagree that the yuppies are gone... they're still with us and have pretty much ruined the economy when they took over Wall Street.

Thanks Fred,
I was not aware of the whole neo-fascist tinge. I could see how that would turn people off, it would give me pause as well. The album covers also bother me, the objectification of women is not something I endorse - especially now that I have 2 daughters. Fred, if I'm ever across the pond, I'd love to buy you a pint at your favorite pub.

While I share your distaste for all things yuppie, I dispute your implication that Roxy Music fans are limited to that one socio-economic group. I would argue that most Roxy Muisc fans (including myself) are not now, and never were, yuppies. I also take issue with Spandau Ballet being lumped in with Roxy Music! Roxy Music has a proud history of producing original avant-rock and sophisticated soul-pop music. IMHO their music is far superior to Spandau Ballet. An opinion that is supported by the fact the Radio Paradise has a number of Roxy Music songs in it's library while it has no Spandau Ballet tunes.
Fred, while yuppies have disappeared from the scene, neither band is extinct. Roxy Music is, supposedly, working on a new album and Spandau Ballet has just announced a reunion.

Funny how back in the day this sounded all avant garde and raw to me, and now it sounds very orthodox, smooth and refined.
I guess these guys had more effect on the progression of music than I would have thought (or noticed while it was happening).

although i'm not a fan of this self-pitying genre of music, I have to admit that I do admire the musicianship and talent of the band. I may not like this song, but I like to listen to it from a technical point of view.

While my Heart is still beating (rip it out!). More yuprock from the dodgy purveyors of neo-fascist chic. Your time's been and gone, Bryan, together with all the stripey shirts and red braces who used to stock their cupboards with your output.

Are you sure? The waist curve is the only tell that I can spot (because men's and women's hips are built differently). But I'm also seeing some man hands and a flat chest (that's not much cleavage for folded arms).

Seriously, the cover of their earlier "Siren" album featured Bryan's then girlfriend, Jerry Hall, so maybe this, too, is a girlfriend.
My gawd, this is almost as bad as the consternation over the gender of the singer from Silversun Pickups.
Live and let live, people.

Boy, do I miss these guys...no matter what phase they were in, I sure loved hearing them on the radio. (I'm in Cleveland and they were an FM staple around here back in the day.)

Roxy Music always had women on their album covers.

What a fabulous band, if anything way under-appreciated. Style and quality to the max.
Style and quality, yes. Don't forget class

I consider the first Roxy Music album to be a perfect LP-music, graphics-everything works.
This album should've been an SNL skit. Frightening.
"It's Pat! "
Where else can I hear Roxy played ? Only here..Thanks R.P.

If the chin were up a bit, we could check for an Adam's apple.

If Bill is reading this, this is why it would be so nice if RP listed the date of the album release. It would be great if we didn't have to be constantly checking Allmusic to see when a song was created.
