Just a castaway, an island lost at sea, oh
Another lonely day, with no one here but me, oh
More loneliness than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah

A year has passed since I wrote my note
I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life or love can break your heart

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah
Oh, message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah

Walked out this morning, I don't believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my

No, listen carefully
“Sending out a ness-oh-ess”.
In honor of Steve Martin and The Jerk, we rewrote the chorus to "picking out a thermos."

The police would have been better with almost any lead singer but sting:

Otherwise great music and lyrics
I'm french, and each time I hear this song, I hear "Mon Opinel a dû mal couper..." (my Opinel -pocket knife- must have cut badly) instead of "More loneliness that any man could bear".
Always takes me back to an Aussie comedy show that after a major police corruption inquiry had an officer singing I get my massage in a brothel. Never been the same since. On a similar note, I know the Jam like eating trifles.
Great song. You could focus in each instrument and they are just great by themselves

Here's why we seem to all cling to the past and think it was somehow better then.

Spring 1983. Senior in high school. Picture perfect weather. With 4 friends, all of us VERY well lubricated, I'm 4 rows back in a large, open-air football stadium with the world's biggest band about 50 feet away from me.

Can't say I've been able to replicate the exhilaration and freedom I felt that day many times since.
Apropos song selection on the anniversary of the first lost soul in the US from Covid-19.  Stay positive, test negative!

There was a wayback-time where one could say "The Police are the best band in the world right now". Oh, sure, anybody could disagree but none could dispute their critical and commercial yield at the time.

FYI, Sting will be the first to give a concert at Le Bataclan in Paris, on 11/12/16, one year after the massacre that took place there.  This is all about resilience to all extremisms.  All proceeds - but a few hundreds euros - will go to the victims and their families.

I first heard this song at a disco club. I was on the raised, lighted dance floor wearing platform shoes and bell bottom pants. I remember thinking...now this is more like it. I was so sick of disco and I still can't believe I dressed that way LOL

All I know is, Sting ran out of lyrics. He sings "sending out an SOS" 17 times.
Drove me flipping nuts on the FM replays. Talk about jabbing the PSD button. Salsa, the news, Shakira, anything but this tripe.

Now I like it more. Because it is not on the radio menu every 15 fookin minutes of programmed play.

I'm of the same mind with many of the comments concerning the overabundance of "Sending out an SOS .." bit.
Other than that, it's a fine pop/rock song.
But yeah, that is annoying ... that's because it (like most Police tunes) is based upon Raggae standards, which are all annoyingly repetitive.

I actually heard this song live in early '79 at a Police show at The Longhorn in downtown Mpls.  It wasn't released yet, as it came out later that year on their 2nd album.  I still have a live tape from that show.  The band didn't really have a bunch of material at that point, so they stretched out every just about every song on "Outlandos d'Amour" longer than normal to fill out an 70 minute show, and also played early single Fallout.  Their 8 minute version of Roxanne really brings meaning to the term "more is less".
I remember seeing the Police in 1983 on their Synchronicity tour.  I enjoyed watching Stewart destroy his drum kit.  He was also breaking sticks throughout the show.  A roadie sat calmly next to his kit handing him stick after stick.  I got a huge kick out of that.
Sending out a ness oh ess...
