In Britain this hair-do could be called a 'convoy cut'. It's a barnet most associated with travellers living in busses and vehicles - those at the punk/crusty/pikey end of that scene. It's normally mostly short at the front with a mullet hanging off the back which is going into dreads. Sometimes it's a bit of a mohawk on the top with shaved sides.

This is a mullet:
A mullet has to have the top of the head shaved back, otherwise, it's just long hair.

Yes, why bother?
Pretty good vocal impersonation of Neil Finn's vocals
Play the original!
I can only give it a 6. I like the guitar work, but his voice just doesn't really bring anything new to the song.

It's not a bad cover, it's just not an outstanding one either.

Nice cover!
heretical tripe -10
I've just tuned in an caught the last remaining bars of this song.... please please please don't play again. He can't sing, the guitar sucks and he looks as if he's just climbed from the primordial ooze.

Crow Magnum Cook!

Jesse's a great guitar player, but a singer he's not.

Wimpy vocals and that dumb Spanish guitar!!! This is utterly dire - how to wreck a classic in one easy move.

I think it's a marvellous Crowded House song. How could it be destroyed like this?
It couldn't be. I like both versions, but I never would have checked out the original if I hadn't watch Jesse and his band play a killer version of this live in my hometown.
Decent cover of the song. The silly hairdo on the cover takes a point off of it, though.

How many songs have you heard in your life? Four? Come on, ya gotta do better than that. Far worse than this, like anything by Britney Spears or Backstreet boys. Worst song ever, my #ss!
love flamenco guitar but this does nothing for me. insipid byran adams-like mediocrity.
this is so, so bad.
I had heard about this version of FaYF, but never actually \"heard\" it. Flamenco? Argh!
This is so hokey and pukey and ookey. . .but I still kind of like it. Damnit.

I get so annoyed with all the children who thing it is cool to dog something in a web post beause it is different from what they are used to. I agree that this cover is not as good as the original, but I like this one and I always enjoy hearing covers of Crowded House songs because it means that the originals won't be lost in obscurity. Crowded House is and always will be my favorite band.

Danny Wilde was with the Rembrants I thought. Not the Finn Bros. or Crowded House. Do I have this wrong?? Good tune by the way!!
Wow, that was the worst song I have ever heard, and the album cover, what a guy..
Danny Wilde : separated at birth from Herman (of Hermit fame)
beautiful guitar!
just putting flamenco guitar into a song isn't enough to make it ok to do a cover. imo
I'd like to hear the Finn's comments on this.I don't think it adds much,if anything to the original, but in it's own(original)way it's as good as the original,so in my book.Awesome.

I think we've heard enough flamenco-flavored music for one afternoon. Is Bill giving dancing lessons or something? WTF?
This adds nothing to the original, though the acoustic guitar remains nice...reminds me of Al Stewart actually.
Wow, I really like this. It's catchy, and not whiny like some. The guitar lick in the background is steller. Solid 9

A mi también, no sé que manía les ha dado a estos de RP con los ritmos "flamencoides" malos ultimamente ... me he reido mucho con tus traducciones ¿sabrías decirlo en inglés?
Neil is one of those guys whose best writing seems to work best for his voice alone. Its not that this isn't a good attempt. It is. But without his voice it lacks (for me) the heart of the song.

I agree. Too bright for the subject matter
agreed across the board. the original is such a beautiful song, and this version does nada for it. 4.

Ugh...this is my second time hearing this track, and it just got downgraded from my previous "2" ranking to a "1". Sucko-barfo indeed.
Tripe, An insult.

What melody? Sounds like repetitive phrases with some fancy semi-Spanish guitar riffs on top. What happened to the Radio Paradise on which I discovered Toby Keith and The Connells?
Welcome to EazyRock 106.8. Houston's lamest station. El-barfo.
I think this version is superfluous.

I would think that when an original is well-loved, practically any cover suffers in comparison. or maybe the cover has to be sufficiently different. Or just really so good on its own terms that you don't bring the original to mind in every moment.
Shoot, I just missed hearing this, and now I'm curious what it sounds like. The original Crowded House version is now in the Library (I uploaded it recently, and RP added it - all hail RP!). The CH version was played for the first time on RP last night.
This song was just sad.
Why?
Great songwriting (and this is a stellar example) can usually survive any arrangement and still sound good. This is probably the exception... this is truly pathetic. A great disservice to a fantastic song.

I thought it was Neil for a half a second, then I got this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. Too close for comfort, and the CH version is much superior, but the guitar is an interesting variation. I don't know why I bothered to comment, when everyone else has said pretty much the same thing, but I feel oddly compelled. Crowded House is definitely in my top 3 favorite pop bands. They may even be at the top. Let's see... Crowded House XTC Oingo Boingo ...wait a minute...have no good pop bands come out since the 80's?? I must not be awake yet...I need my coffee this morning.
THIS is WEAK!!! If you want Crowded House, listen to them.
I MUCH PREFER HIS INSTRUMENTAL STUFF.HE'S AN EXCELLENT GUITARIST.
I was ready to hate this based on buddy's photo. Not...bad. At all. Good song to begin with, though.

he doesn't sound identical to Neil because Neil's voice truly is one-of-a-kind. that said, this guy has a nice voice and I like the guitar in this version...but the original is the BEST! probably my favorite Crowded House song, and it's not easy to pick just one...
Yeah I thought it was Neil Finn also.....but what I like about it is are there any men out there that really feel like this ? YOU GOT MY ATTENTION! Never been one to follow the crowd though based on what everyone else says......

It is weird how vocals are almost exactly the same. I was half listening, thinking this must be an "unplugged" Crowded House or Neil Finn track until I saw it was someone else. Well, you know what they say about imitation...

Of course it's a good song - it's kinda hard to foul up one of Neil's classics. I don't know about that flamenco-style noodling in the background, though. It kinda makes the song sound like background music for the "multicultural" store at the mall that sells rain sticks and Zen rock gardens.
Exactly! I heard this in a cool cultural shop in Old Sacramento and asked to see the cd cover. I recognized the vocals immediately but nothing else. I love Crowded House and this was certainly putting an original twist on a favorite song.
Thanks! I'll check those out. I've heard What I Get Paid For and I agree it's a cool song. Lazy8 wrote:
Being too big a fan myself, maybe I can steer you towards some good stuff. My favorite covers are by Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter, on one of Shawn's live albums. They do a great job on Four Seasons In One Day, which would be an easy song to botch. Shawn's version of Private Universe is pretty good too. If you get a taste for Ms. Colvin, she does a fantastic duet with Neil on What I Get Paid For, which they cowrote. This one is hard to find in the states. Though not strictly speaking a CH tune, RichardThompson and his son Teddy do a version of Persuasion that gives me goose bumps. This is great material, but there are musicians out there who can handle it. I've never heard the SNTR cover but I've never thought of them as being in the same league as any of the above. I liked this cover just fine; I'll agree it's not on par with the original...what is? It's still way above average.
Fantastic song. My favorite cover is Mary Black's. Spare, acoustic and lovely.

I couldn't agree more. What a great song to start the day, when spring has finally arrived in the UK :D
When I heard this today, I was thinking it sounded Finn/Crowded House-esque. Now I know why...
This is a really nice version of this... my first thought was it was a Neil solo version or something from a live album, but I see it's not.

I really like this. Having not heard the original, I now have to go find the original! Would love to know which CH album it's on as I don't have any of them and so far I like everything I've heard from them. My take on covers is that they're ok as long as the band/artist covering is attempting to convey their own interpretation and not just trying to make a buck off of someone else's success. It's usually pretty obvious to me who's doing what. Don't know if anyone recalls Ace of Base's "Cruel Summer" (originally by Bananarama). It sounded EXACTLY like the original with different drums.

Outstanding cover of a GREAT song. Very nice.
How do you put into words a feeling that you get from hearing a song? This one just blows me away. End of story.
Personally, I love to hear an interpretation of a great song by an artist other than the writer. The voice here seems very similar to Neil Finn's. The spanish/classical guitar adds another dimension though. I like it.

TOTALLY!! Good call there. I actually like this version quite a bit...no, it's not the original CH tune, but it's neat to hear it with my bud Jesse playing along. Be sure to catch him live if you ever get the chance.

Isn't this one of those mixed songs like Public Enemy singing to Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass? It's a good mix, but it sounds more like a novelty song. Can't believe that's not Mr. Finn singing.
Sounds like the original... not bad...
Oh this is quite funny! At first I thought \"ooh ooh, Jayhawks, I love the Jayhawks\". Then I thought, no, no, Gina, you\'ve gotten confused because you bought both the new Jayhawks and a Neil Finn ablum at the same time. This song is Neil Finn....\" And then I thought... nooooooooo, can\'t be Neil Finn, so who is it? Needless to say, I was glad to see some of my opinions reinforced and I don\'t feel like such a nut anymore! -Gina
Okay, but falls well short of the Crowded House version. Play the original!
Nice, but I still prefer the original. Vocals sound rather Neil-like....

Agree with that. Not a patch either on the original or Neil Finn's live version from his recent live album with Eddie Vedder and Johnny Marr.
Nice set Bill. How about \"Three Marlenas\" next.
