Is caged by frail and fragile bars
Restless by day and by night
Rants and rages at the stars

Has had to learn to live with pain

Sometimes it tries to kid me
That it's just a teddy bear
Or even somehow manage
To vanish in the air

That everybody knows
They've seen him out dressed in my clothes
Patently unclear
If it's New York or New Year

Oh, man, the faster version was the Johnny Cash version, I discover by looking. I'd heard it in my head in Nick's voice. Anyway, both versions are terrific, but Nick's holds its own, and that's tough to do when up against Cash.
Sweet! I'd heard a different version, a bit faster, and this one beats it. Always a joy to hear Nick.
Saw him live here in Tokyo a couple of years ago and he was even better than I had expected.
