Let me give my opinion then for balance - a great song from the best decade of music - the glorious 1980s. More please!

Yes, there was good music in the 80-'s; it's just that most of the bands who started getting airplay were one-finger synth-pop garbage.  The good stuff tended to come from bands of an earlier era.

Frankie weren't that though...

Oh, and the Cure?  Yetch.

If we need the comments to be a dreamy waltz through a magical kingdom, I think we misunderstand the purpose of an open forum like this.   Playing "Relax" already made it a trudge into the gaping maw of hell for a lot of us.

Then give it a low rating - Bill's stated elsewhere that the ratings *do* affect the number of plays - push the PSD button and move on.
"gaping maw of hell"??
Why the vitriol, and - outside of trolling - how does that contribute at all to a discussion?

Why...?
It's the end of my workday, at the end of a LONG, tough workweek. I heard the opening notes of this song. Immediately turned the RP player volume all the way up. And my laptop volume to 100. And loved every second of it.

(Good thing I'm working from home today.)

THANK YOU BILL!

Not my favorite from FGTH, but a solid standard. The DLP was a masterpiece, all in all.

The liner notes in the CD were crazy -- they documented all of the little audio glitches on the album that probably 99.9% of the people who bought the CD couldn't hear.

I don't actually like this song, but a few bonus points for Zoolander!
However you might feel about this one … it certainly is iconic!
Way back when this was in the charts, I was 18 and working in our local Woolworth's.  By a happy twist of fortune, I ended up running the record department. I used to stick this on the turntable, crank it up to eleven, and watch the starched-knickered old biddies in my little Hertfordshire satellite town get VERY upset! Thankfully, our store manager was in his twenties and used to enjoy the spectacle as well, so if anything I was actively encouraged.  It was probably helped by the fact that I was having a torrid affair with him, haarrrrr!!!
Diggin' it.

Hated this when it came out, still do. This is the sort of crap you hear in the UK on the radio, not usually on RP.
Something I've picked up on after hearing this one too many times: how the singer holds on the words "to it" in every verse. Really doesn't want to let them go

If you thought the 1980s was "a total lack of creativity", you really were not paying very much attention.  This song certainly does not exemplify the entire decade.
Maybe not the very best, but it was were the ones we loved in the East German times, because it was the sound of the free West!!!
Interesting.  I found an old mp3 player over the weekend that had this album on it.  I powered it up, and it still worked, so I played this album for the first time in about 15 years.  Forgot how much I like it (even though it is pretty dated).

Yea, there was a lot of that genre, but there was also some amazing music being made too (as there was in all decades) you just had to look farther than your top 40 radio stations.

Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Grateful Dead, Rush, U2, Dire Straits, the Cure, to name a few, all put out some of their best work during this time. I had no trouble finding cool shows to go to far from the poppy synth sounds.

And going even further to other genres, think of the great jazz stuff being made from the likes of Weather Report and super band Return to Forever. Go even further to world music and country and you'll also find quality stuff.

It's easy to overgeneralize and overlook the good music in that decade because the commercial stuff was, well pretty commercial, as it is today where much of the auto-tuned radio fodder sounds the same.

But today it's also easier to find the good stuff because we have stations like this one to educate us away from the musical sheep. Muchos gracias to Senor Bill!

This is one of those were reading the lyrics really adds nothing to one's understanding of the song....but they are graphically (no pun intended) funny, just for the repetition.  I'd like to read this slowly in 'fake literary voice' to someone.

I have strong memories of this travesty at the time of its hyped up stardom ( being British)  I hated it then and with the due course of time I can comfortably state I still dispise it.. In my humble opinion a strong case of the " Kings New Clothes "
When it started I thought it was Two Tribes in which case it would have been a Cold War relic, but it's just a relic {#Wink}
Not a bad one though
A great song with some very sound advice{#Hug}.

Much better than most of the crud in the charts nowadays.
I heard a podcast with Quentin Tarantino one time that in Pulp Fiction, the scene in the hotel room with Bruce Willis and his girlfriend that he really wanted her shirt to say "FRANKIE SAYS RELAX" but Frankie said no. But Frankie did let it be used by Ross in Friends. Frankie later said he regretted that a lot.

Haven't heard this in ages!! I ought to bust out the vinyl EP I bought way back then!

I happened to hear this tune at a hi-fi store on vinyl through a Linn/Audio Research/Ruark setup that runs >$20k. Whether you like the lyric/style of this tune or not, the dynamics and production of the first 5 cuts of this album are outstanding, especially to hold up so well on such a revealing system as the one described above. Not that it applies much when listening over RP... This kinda sucks without the full range of a big rig.

Abstinence? You have got to be kidding! The song I'm listening to says: "Relax, don't do it, when you want to come." Are you really confused about what that means? I always found it funny that such an obscene song could become a mainstream hit. Anyway, the sound of this album was very influential at the time, even if the songs themselves are a bit thin. A nice bit of pop history, I think.
This isn\'t eclectic, intelligent, or anything like it. This truly sux. \'Ol Holly is probably laughing in his/her grave that anyone even remembers this bit of tripe from the 80\'s!
\"Two Tribes\" was much better...
My Goodness !!!! (has absolutely nothing to do with this) Had this of course in the 80's, but never noticed the climactic "splish" sound effects 8O
Anyone remember the episode of Perfect Strangers when Balki and Larry are stuck in quicksand and Balki is telling Cousin Larry to Relax. Then Balki starts singing this song That episode is classic!!
i find it hard to relax when this song is playing.
LOL. This station still surprises me. This is another tune that, used sparingly, definitely adds value to the mix.
