we lock the hurricane indoors
looking for shelter, we deny and ignore
afraid that our words bring clouds we talk in code
the thunder or cruel perfection covers love
and we're cold
the private storm
and our souls are worn from the tears
the private storm
and it rages on through the years
no warning the ground pulls out from underneath
we tiptoe through air until we see the blood on their teeth
time doesn't heal, the scars turn into wounds
as we walk lightly silent screams in the storm
looking for shelter, we deny and ignore
afraid that our words bring clouds we talk in code
the thunder or cruel perfection covers love
and we're cold
the private storm
and our souls are worn from the tears
the private storm
and it rages on through the years

The vocal twin of Deb Talon, lead singer from the Weepies. Good stuff!
Love this woman's voice. smooth as silk.

This tape stayed in my Walkman for ages. I stumbled on her after hearing her version of "A Midnight Clear" over the end credits of the movie of the same name (an excellent anti-war movie, unjustly forgotten).
I really have enjoyed this album. Then I had to listen to the la la's on Gilmore Girls and it's just not as fun anymore. Rats.
I think it was the Finn family

I was just coming here to post the same thing! Again, Mr. Goldsmith is doing his magic...BRAVO!!
Others are probably aware, but I didn't see any mention earlier in this song's comments regarding Bill's creativity in playing "Private Storm" immediately following Sam's ex-husband T-Bone's "River of Love".
It's not always the case that Rivers of Love lead to Private Storms, but appropriate in this case...

The perfect "bon mot" to this enchanting, haunting piece, God rest your soul Ms. C.
I remember the first time I heard "The Turning" and thought there was actually some hope for contemporary christian music to be, well, "art" if I may be so bold. But Leslie walked away from that, went deeper (I suspect) into the mystery of life rechristened (her idea? TBone's?) as Sam. Super clever given the name space collision with the previously noted early rock producer. I followed her lead eventually; so far it looks to me like her intuitions and courage about the bigger picture were spot on. Also had the privilege of seeing Sam open for Bruce Cockburn, I think it was on the "Burning Light" tour, very enjoyable performances.
If Sam Phillips ever unleashed her voice completely, it'd generate enough power to light Australia for a year. I love how she chooses to restrain her vocals (unlike certain divas like Mariah, Celine, and Michael Bolton, who don't understand the "less is more" concept), which adds impact and depth to whatever she's singing. Love her music.

Glitch alert: accessing the artist website gets to a Wikipedia article about the other Sam Phillips. A dude who could not possibly make such interesting and deep music as the real Sam Phillips who is played here.

THEY'RE GREAT!!!!!!
Brilliantly mixed in after Crowded House tune. Like the haunting yet understated vocals with ethereal qualities. Nice harmonies too.
Got here on PSD. Wow, this is a very good song and excellently performed. Cynaera, you nailed SP's style. Wish you were here to read this.
Even if I've said this before, this is such a beautiful song. The music, lyrics, instrumentation, vocals, tone, and mood all mesh together perfectly.
Nice tune for the morning here in CA, thanks!

I remember in the '80's when she was known as Leslie Phillips as a christian artist. She was considered "fringe" among the christian music scene. I'm glad she found her groove.
Oh, yay! Haven't heard this in ages.
Why she looks like a busted cereal killer?
Lalalalalala...!
Sorry, the song means noooothing to me, despite
the Moody Blues mellotron!

Now this is how it's done. A solid 9. A 10 when you see her do it live in person.
Refreshingly original............9 at least
Love her!

Apologies. That comment was unfounded.
You can delete them both
OK...love the Sam.
But, anyone else worry that , in that cover shot, she looks like Cory Haim in drag??
9, notwithstanding.
excellent album all around
I'd like this better in the evening for wind down music.
I really like this. Sounds eerie wheh she says "private storm" and the subtle electric guitar line reminds me of tumbleweeds in a ghost town.

Sir/Madam -
Your intelligence has turned me away - now what to do?

Her voice is right on the edge of irritating for me ... but somehow she manages not to cross that line. And she's quite a good writer. And her arrangements are always right on target. So yeah, it works for me.
And the first tropical storm of the year rages outside, beating rain against my windows and roof, to this accompaniment. Right now. Wonderful.
Excellent! Great set!

This, I doubt. Bill, can we delete this detritus? And the comments too?
Sam is nothing but consistent. Really like her.
Neat riff and bass harmony.
Thanks for those insightful comments a8o.
Anyway I think this is a really nice song which compliments Ms. Phillips' voice.
love this collection of songs by mrs t-bone burnett.
some of us can understand this song, some of us can't...
Oh shit, I just realised i wasn't listening to the stream but actually to Squarepusher's new album.
Apologies. That comment was unfounded. It obviously sucks balls.

That's a recommendation, Bluedot? In my opinion, it doesn't do justice to the lovliness of the harmonies of this song and the mellow-yet-taut qualities of Sam Phillips' superior voice.
ah c'mon...i was saying that i LIKE the song.
that isn't good enough for you?
why do you have to be critical and tell me that i'm recommending it in some kind of inferior way?
this is SO lame.
what are you ON?
can't we both just like it in our own way, for our own reasons?

I saw her on Bruce Cockburn's Burning Light tour as well. T-Bone Burnett came out with her to play guitar. She did a very good set! Bruce was amazing! It was a great night all around. An interesting side note: Sam Phillips was not the original opening act for the tour. Mark Heard was to be the opening act. For reasons I cannot remember, he had to bow out. All of them - Bruce, Sam, Mark, and T-Bone - were friends. After Mark's untimely passing in 1992 from a heart attack, Bruce would write and record Closer To The Light in Mark's memory.
