The selfish, they're all standing in line
Faithing and hoping to buy themselves time
Me, I figure as each breath goes by
I only own my mind

The north is to south what the clock is to time
There's east and there's west and there's everywhere life
I know I was born and I know that I'll die
The in-between is mine
I am mine

And the feeling, it gets left behind
All the innocence lost at one time
Significant behind the eyes
There's no need to hide
We're safe tonight

The ocean is full 'cause everyone's crying
The full moon is looking for friends at high tide
The sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow's denied
I only know my mind
I am mine

And the meaning, it gets left behind
All the innocence lost at one time
Significant behind the eyes
There's no need to hide
We're safe tonight, whoa

And the feelings that get left behind
All the innocence broken with lies
Significance between the lines
We may need to hide

And the meanings that get left behind
All the innocence lost at one time
We're all different behind the eyes
There's no need to hide

Horrible crap.  And no IDGAF what the song is about.
I'm a fan on the tail end of PJ's long 30+ year arc, but I gotta say that after listening to this band for a year on Sirius riding around in my car -- despite Vedder's sometimes incoherent howling, the occasional indulgent or less than tight playing, and songs that perhaps come up short of good composition -- Pearl Jam was and is one hot happening colossal band.  Some of their live concert tracks are off the charts, and studio cuts like State of Love and Trust seem to break new thresholds.  Fuckin a.
 PhoenixArtDj wrote:

This song was a reaction by the band to the tragedy they witnessed performing at the Roskilde music festival in summer of 2000. 9 people died as the crowd surge pressed in on barriers causing some to suffocate and become trapped. It was a terrible tragedy at what should have been a great day of music.

The event affected the band so much they considered retiring. Ed penned these lyrics as they resumed touring in the US that year as a way to cope; reaffirming that life is full of meaning and the best way to honor those we lose in life is to live our own lives without hiding, be ourselves, and live confidently.

If you didn't know that, might make the song more meaningful. Just a little insight. Hope you all enjoy your day fellow RP junkies.

The greatest band that I absolutely can't listen to. Vibrato is a terrible thing in the throats of the wrong people.
great, that's what I have guessed yesterday, when you have played another beautiful song from N.D.

Sorry. Too much seasick-singing PJ.

From the dictionary that came with OS X (I think it's the New Oxford American):

chantey

chantey |ˈSHantē| (also chanty, shanty, or sea chantey)

noun

a song with alternating solo and chorus, of a kind originally sung by sailors while performing physical labor together.

ORIGIN mid 19th. cent.: probably from French chantez! ‘sing!,’ imperative plural of chanter .

shanty |ˈSHantē|

noun (pl. shanties)

variant spelling of chantey.

14 years on, it still sucks!

decent song, but not the best from the album. I'm a fan of Love Boat Captain, and if you wish to extend the political commentary, Bushleaguer would add fuel to the fire with the quote..."Drilling for fear, makes the job simple...Born on third, thinks he got a triple".
a great song from an underrated album.

When the album came out, I read a review that suggested that Eddie's lyric in this song

"I know I was born and I know that I'll die
The in between is mine
I am mine"

was evidence of how self-centered he was.  I wondered, what album are you listening to?

It sure does.  The GOP wants to spend and spend but not pay for anything.  They howl about cutting taxes to zero in the same speeches in which they pound their fists and demand for spending an additional trillion dollars on the military.  Ask for an explanation for this from a Republican and you'll get boilerplate on affirmative action and terrorism.  A coherent explanation from a Republic is about as rare as the unicorn.

People, you're missing the point. It doesn't matter who is in the oval office because Americans (and I AM one) are too short-sighted to plan for the future. We are strictly reactionary in this country. Always have been, always will be. The biggest crisis to hit our civilization is the energy crisis and it just snuck up on us without a word from anyone in power and now the proverbial shit is hitting the virtual fan.

Americans are going to have to get used to the idea that we are not nearly as rich and powerful as we think we are.

We are about to be humbled in a big way.

BTW, great song by Pearl Jam. 8

Gosh, I just think this a good song by a great band. Not sure where all this other stuff is coming from.
Lived through both. Not even close. Carter Administration did many things well (like public lands conservation) that never got noticed amid a bad economy and Iran. W has put the nation in hock for his Iraq misadventure and has eviscerated the capable parts of the fed. govt (exhibit A, talk to a Park Ranger this summer about the current state of Natl Park Service morale). Bullshit, I am old enoung and remember who was in the white house the previous 8 years when the recession started, Nixon and Ford, both real gems. Jimmy Carter was not a bad president, and as a person he is outstanding, he won a noble peace prize and continues to do major charity work. Neither Bush is ever going to do that. If our current President was not born a rich boy, he wouldn't be in the white house. He has never achieved anything great in his whole life, and he is going to go down in history in the catagory of stupid presidents. In my lifetime there isn't a republican president that I can honestly say I am proud of, yet these idiots keep getting elected. ??????

I'd feel the same. I'm a "righty" and I personally resent singers who spend half their show hammering politics in a stoned-stupor instead of entertaining, just like I resent Hollywood people who can't remember their real name from character portrayal to character portrayal giving their uneducated opinion either. Those of us who were actually aware when Carter was in office can attest that he holds no candle to Bush when it comes to being a lousy President. The current Chief Executive has no peers in that regard...being lousy is the one thing he excels at. Eddie, on the other hand, just excels.
Pearl Jam - I Am Mine Toad The Wet Sprocket - Walk on the Ocean REM - Everybody Hurts it's a trio of 6/8!

nobody can argue that Bush is not the worst president EVER.

Yet another "people who have any sort of creative ability or artistic talent should not express their views on politics and such" comment. How fucking annoying.

Right. It was hallucinagenic jelly, made by his native american grandmother for his native american grandfather who liked it. What seventh grade perverted adolescent convinced the person who commented about the origin of the band's name that it was a reference to sperm? Yeah, right. Of course, Jim Morrison said that Crystal Ship referred to a glass of bourbon, too.

I'm not a Pearl Jam fan. They write a lot of music that goes nowhere. But this one is absolutely fantastic. The tone of his voice is pleasant to me and his phrasing is amazing. The guitar work is stellar. It's a 10 in my book. Pearl Jam has earned my respect.
someone has seen the light! this is rock and roll ... who cares how you sing, as long as you have something to say ... i thought dylan proved that years ago when he revolutionized rock ... and believe me, eddie has a lot of good things to say.

right, ed, please stop speaking your mind about the current fucked up state this country's "foreign policy" and its so-called "leader" and placate and pacify this asshole, pleeeze??

can't say there's anything about Eddie that reminds me of Gordan Lightfoot???
"I Know My Mind, I Only Know I'm Mine" I like that line a lot, the rest is fantabulous too, of course, from the Pearls, whatdyaexpect? Riot Act?

You are right. Maybe that is why I like this so much.

i'm curious where you base your "cliche alt vocal" comment, since they've been around for fifteen years now seems to me that you're drawing the comparison in the wrong direction, there are alot of bands (creed, nickelback) who to me, are alot more 'cliche alt rock' and in my opinion, are major pearl jam/eddie rip off
couldn't agree more. . .

I almost hate to comment because I know lots of you guys love this band, but this band has never done it for me. Eddie's billy goat vibrato and the effected cliche "alt" vocal style just turn me off. There are a couple of songs that I find appealing though, maybe if someone else sang them.
I disagree with 99% of what you said, but he does sound like goat boy on this song.

It seems many people have misread that zealous pursuit of "integrity" and just want to bash them for those very efforts. one gets the sense that there is almost an anger directed at Pearl Jam related to things non-musical. A shame. Pearl Jam fought, unsuccessfully, to keep the Ticketmaster gang from gouging concert goers. They stepped away from the commercial hype machines such as MTV. They do everything in their power to keep the best seats in the house for the fans and not the record company/advertising muckety mucks. Their ticket prices are kept much lower than the market would bear while other bands try to grab as much lucre from their "fans" as they can. Plus, "Riot Act" is a very good album.
couldn't have said it better my own self!

If you speed up any Pearl Jam song it sounds like the Go-Go's / Belinda Carlisle. Kinda like Elvis sped up sounds like Cher.
That Belinda Carlisle observation is hilarious. I can really hear it. Another singing sheep. But somehow I find it easier to tolerate a male singing sheep than a female singing sheep. Go figure.

As soon as I heard it I thought "Who are they trying to be, Pearl Jam?" Now that it actually Pearl Jam I think even less of it for some reason. I guess because the pretension is sincere instead of ironic.
