Oh, look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out on to Grey Street

She thinks, "Hey...
How did I come to this?
I dream myself a thousand times around the world,
But I can't get out of this place"

There's an emptiness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together
To grey
And it breaks her heart

How she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she knows well He doesn't listen
There's still a hope in her He might

She says, "I pray...
But they fall on deaf ears
Am I supposed to take it on myself,
To get out of this place?"

There's loneliness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart
When all the colors mix together
To grey
And it breaks her heart

There's a stranger speaks outside her door
Says take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
It'd take the work out of the courage

But she says, "Please...
There's a crazy man that's creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street
And the end of the world"

There's an emptiness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now
It's more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her
Using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together
To grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To grey...

I'll second that emotion.  This song isn't my favorite DMB tune — it's doesn't suck but it's not "Two Step" or "Jimi Thing" or "Long Black Veil" either.  Incidentally, it sure did make a great segue out of Thievery Corporation.

More DMB please.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask. Was Dave in the "I now pronounce you Larry..." movie as the clothes shop worker?(I apologize, it's not a music topic)

I checked IMDB, he was not listd in the top 10 actors...

Always did like this one.

Yes, please play more of it!

It was.  For future reference, a question like that can be answered on imdb in 3 minutes, instead of the 3 months it took me.

Great live shows.
Maybe it's just how the song comes out through the internet and the speakers on my computer, but I prefer the version that was on the Lillywhite Sessions.  The album they did in 2000, but the record company axed, because it wasn't a happy-go-lucky sound that they were use to from DMB.  It got leaked on to the internet (by Dave himself?), became hugely popular and then the record company wanted to make some $$$ off of it and then released it as Busted Stuff with a couple of additional songs recorded in the studio and dropped some of the others.  I don't know if they rerecorded songs or used what they had recorded with Steve Lillywhite.  Either way I noticed a difference and I figure Bill wouldn't be playing the bootleg version.  That Lillywhite Sessions is great stuff!  My favorite album of theirs.{#Yes}

The head thumpin' "boom-boom-boom" is so freakin' relentless, it's just thumpin' freakin' numbin' torture!

This song is incredibly good, regardless of your preconceived notions about DMB.

Neither - it was baby seals. Live, on his website, too.

Perhaps the best of DMB's late tunes
Perhaps Dave had a premonition of what is going on with some of our Vets today.
Very impressive first listen.............

Yes, yes they do! And I like it too. (but this song and CD--not so much)

Isn't that about the time they got caught dumping their raw sewage? (I mean into the river, not in the record stores.)
DMB rules, period! All you bashers are nothing but wannabees.

Why the Dave bashing really. There are too many horrid bands worthy of the rtashing. The man and the band have talent. Period.

I am just now starting appreciate DMB. I am liking them more and more as I hear more of their songs. They have a truly unique sound.
Excellent song.
damb! I keep looking, but there\'s still nothing lower than 1.

LOL . . . do you happen to frequent fark.com? Lotta kittie killin' goin' on over there. Regarding DMB, their music is pretty overplayed on the lame excuses for FM stations here in LA, but I enjoy hearing a song or two from them occasionally on RP. This particular song is quite likable IMHO.
I don\'t dig. There\'s way too much youthful pretense in Dave for someone in his 30s. His writing feels self-congratulatory to me. Meh, the only members of the band that are worth anything are the drummer and bassist. The rest are a joke - including Dave.
The coments here finally made me pay attention to the lyrics. Wow, good stuff.

Yes!! Me too. I just find myself not wanting to subject myself to their music.

I think he is an amazingly gifted lyric writer, as well as guitar player. He and his band have been together almost 20 years, and they put on one of the most tight live shows going. YAY DMB!!

Well, he did kill those puppies...
if i were twentysomething now the dmb is a group that i would be crazy about. i even like them at my advanced age.

Thanks for playing this song.....it\'s good stuff

I thought the selection of instruments is one of the factors that defines a genre in the first place. But we're getting hung up on symantics. Sax or no sax, the song is dull.

Your comments have caused me to really listen to the lyrics Mateo. Thanks for the insight.
god, i don\'t like this band to begin with, but this song SUCKS!!! like so many have said before me, ENOUGH WITH DMB! there is plenty more (good) music to play....

Well, let me know when the E. Street band start backing Dave "Tuneless" Matthews, and we can re-evalutate the rule. I never claimed this wasn't rock, just that it sucked.

Bill, I just don\'t understand why we have to hear DMB so many times a day. There is so much other music out there. The same comment applies to Natalie Merchant :)
This \"Saxaphone rule\" is ridiculous. That said, I\'m *so* f**king sick of DMB. For crying out loud, it\'s the same songs, day after day after day after day...

too true - the sax just does not belong in pop or rock music. just like that "Baker Street" song, DMB is intolerable.

Amazing lyrics. My favorite part is: There's an emptiness inside her And she'll do anything to fill it in And though it's red blood bleeding from her now It's more like cold blue ice in her heart She feels like kicking out all the windows And setting fire to this life She could change everything about her Using colors bold and bright But all the colors mix together - to grey And it breaks her heart It breaks her heart To Grey
I\'ve been on a self-imposed ban of everything Dave Matthews for several years now – but that was actually listenable.
Wow!
waaaaay to much dave matthews!
