Look at this big - eyed fish swimming in the sea, oh
How it dreams to be a bird swoop and diving through the breeze
So one day caught a big old wave up on to the beach
Now he's dead you see, beneath the sea is where a fish should be

But oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem brighter on the other side

You see this crazy man decided not to breathe
He turned red and blue, purple, colorful indeed
No matter how his friends begged and pleaded the man would not concede
And now he's dead, you see, the silly man should know you got to breathe

But oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem brighter on the other side

Oh God
But under the weight of life
Things seem so much better on the other side
No way
No way
No way out of here

You see the little monkey sitting up in his monkey tree
One day decided to climb down and run off to the city
But look at him now lost and tired living in the street
As good as dead, you see, do what a monkey does - stay up your tree!

But oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem brighter on the other side

Oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem so much better on the other side

No way
No way
No way
No way out of here

Rain in my dreams

Fall away

Fortunately, you don't need to be a snob to know how bad this track is.

When Jerry Garcia died, the alcoholic frat boys went to DMB, and the druggies went to Phish.  Yawn.
Song is about "A glimpse into the doubting world of a pessimist. The stories all relate how bleak life is, and how death has to be better than existence." (antsmarching.org)

I hate the sax (and violin) on DVM and it always totally ruined the music for me. Then I heard - and eventually bought - his solo effort "Some Devil". Very very good and consistent album - and no sax... Just simple(r) tunes with more depth.

Yay.  Then I can stop trying to like Dave Matthews.

Hey, I actually didn't turn the down the volume on that one (although I did kinda ignore it doing work).

I once heard that the sax is the Velveeta Cheese of musical instruments....it goes over everything.

it's all here.
the dysrhythmia. the warbling. the cloying Kenny G style alto sax.
a solid 2

Just can't get on board with any DMB.

Always seemed like music was not the most important thing going on for it.

Oh yeah...let's throw a sax in there...just...because!

Yup, we're all graduates from the Mother's milk tasting and criticism contest .

i agree. he's boring since the day he was born.
I haven't made up my mind about the song as a whole, but there are definitely some interesting musical elements at play here.

I wish DM were something other than DM.
What is this song saying really? If you have dreams, dont do anything, sit where you are, thank you?

Not one of their better efforts.

Definitely.
Apparently, many listeners bring a lot of "baggage" and prejudices from their FM radio listening. I feel really lucky that I never listened to mainstream FM radio. (My favorite station was KBEY in Kansas City, which went mainstream about 1972, and that was that for me.) So like almost everything else I hear on RP this is new to me and I like it!
please, no dave matthews

I disagree on both counts. First, Tiny Tim is outstanding. That whole debut (only?) album of his is excellent. I actually just listened to it a month ago or so and it was shocking how good it is. Second, I do not hear this song (DM) as 1. Giving it a 2.
Look at the little monkey in the tree! Wait, it's Dave Matthews!

Yep.. no competition. The originals are so much more deep, raw, and real feeling. Lillywhite Sessions are like getting a chance to see the non-commercialized Dave for a moment.

How are your 15 minutes going?
Heh, you'd be much more convincing if you didn't spell "do" wrong in the first five words ;) But seriously, I mostly agree. Dave Matthews is quite talented and his band is moreso. The reason why I could never get too into him is his voice - really annoying. Regardless, it is very unfair of RPers to give every Dave Matthews song a 5/10 - he is simply better than that. auburntigerrich wrote:
I'm going to due my listener's duty here and stand up for DMB. I enjoy an eclectic/world/electronic mix just as much as the next guy, and I despise FM radio for the demise of the spread of independent music today, but I enjoy DMB. I have for many years. Does that make me a bad RP listener? No. Carter Beauford is one of the, if not the, most talented percussionists in the field today. He has released more than one video tutorials on drumming, and he continues to marvel. I worked with a guy who started his own punk-ish band once, who hates DMB to pieces, but he admits that Carter is a genious. Take a second to ignore Dave and just focus in on the drumming... then watch a concert DVD and look at the emotion that Boyd Tinsley pours into his fiddle work. Personally, I don't enjoy Dave Matthews (solo)without the rest of the gang. It's the chemistry that makes the music. So, before you take one look at the artist name and rapid fire Sucko-Barfos at it, due your listener's duty and take a second to give it a second listen. Busted Stuff has some great tunes on it. Kudos to the Goldsmiths for acknowledging that just because DMB is popular amongst the mainstream, they don't put out great tunes. That is all.

Oh dear, well then I guess I'll have to give them all a 10 (even those I think rate a 7 or 8 ) I've always liked DMB, right down to his distinctive voice and the manic gleem in his eyes. Also like the globally imaginative vision and ocassional pan-species outlook (as here).Kinda reminds me of the Moody Blues at times. Wonder if he's ever done acid, mescaline or ayahuasca. (not that I recommend them anymore)

The above quote is merely the obtuse babblings of an amazed peasant! Dave is the man!
How dare you denigrate Tiny Tim in such a manner.

Starbucks makes good coffee? They make consistant coffee, consistant espresso shots... and they make it consistant from starbucks to starbucks, so that you have some reasonable expectation of what you're going to get when you walk into one, be that in Seatlle Washington, or Warrenton Virginia. Personally I drink 20oz Americano coffees, that's 4 shots of espresso in a 20oz cup, fill the rest of it with hot water, that and starbucks' Carmel Macchiato are the only things *I* love in starbucks. My best friend however hates carmel and loves chocolate, so he goes for Mochas, go figure... Now, I *can't stand* the way starbucks makes their "coffee of the day", its double the strength it should be. And anyone can make starbucks the same way at home.. use Eight - 1/8th of a cup scopes of starbucks ground coffee instead of 4 for your full sized pot.. and you'll have a pot of Starbuck's coffee of the day. (standard coffee scoop measure is 1/8th cup - check your local Kmart or Walmart for 88 cent coffee scoops and measure correctly) ;) As for Dave & the replicants.. er.. Mathews Band.. they are just like any other artist out there... they have a few hits, they bring their agenda to the people, and then they try to crank out hit after hit or song after song to appease (enlighten? shock? surprise?) the masses in some way. Any artist that says otherwise and is exhibiting their works is lying.. as they all want to be popular in some way, else they'd keep their work locked up as a personal monument to their own self being and exhibit by invitation only. And this is not to mean that dave & company are horrid or anything.. just that sometimes their songs sound all the same.. other times they have a few really good hits that just about everyone can enjoy.. obviously this tune wasn't one of them because the people here at RP are the most diverse I've seen (watch the comments and ratings for songs you'll see that) and they've all chimed in (what 70 some so far) with an average ranking.. (sorry for the long post folks..) -T

I connected with this song since I moved to a new high school, and basically a new life. It was so hard to let go, I wanted to go to the other side, but I knew my place was elsewhere. That's just ranting though. Nice song. I like. It's Leroi Moore that makes each song so unique. They do tend to stick to a small range of harmonies however. I still like! ;) :p :D
DMB puts me to sleep. The novelty has worn off and there just isn\'t anything else to the music.
This song is a great improvement over most of what came from their last album.

you havent heard very many guitarists and drummers, have you? dave's guitar style is certainly somewhat unique, i'll give you that, but beyond that he's nothing special on the axe, really. as for the drummer, well... thats just plain silly man! :p

AMEN!
Always when Dave Matthews is played, I have to think about an article I read about his time as a street musician. One of his favourite spots was near Amsterdam's red light district, where most money was to be made, 'cause customers felt the need to pay off their guilt, as was Dave's explanation. His music always sounds to me like he's wanting to do something very different compared to all he had to play being a streetmusician, because he got more or less bored with that(?). Anyway, it seems he can play anything he wants because of that part of his background.
Bill: please, please, please ease up on the DMB.
Not a bad song, but I'm about ODed on Dave Matthews. I'm trying to be open-minded, but I'm starting to feel evangelized re. Mr. Matthews.
way to much dave mattews
i love the lyrics to this song, but am not crazy about this version. have this song on the unofficial \"lillywhite sessions\" cd and like it better there, in all its unfinished glory. this song, and others on busted stuff, all sound kind of slow to me in comparison, even though they\'re relatively \"slow\" songs to begin with. i thought there was something wrong with the CD at first...
